Android Auto.. any particular point for me?

Featured Replies

Hi y'all, Being equipped with a MIB1 Amundsen, I see loads of folks "upgrading" to MIB2 or aftermarket units to get Carplay/Android Auto functionality.

Temptation is quite the thing, give me shiny new stuff! However, the practical side of my nature (cheers, parents!) doesn't see that much extra value for me out of spending a few hundred quid.

In no specific order..

1)The MIB1 works fine with my phone (my main music player) on Bluetooth and the SD card in the glovebox if I can't be bothered switching BT on.

2) Satnav-wise (there was supposed to be a SD card in the other slot, but locl Skoda Select are "looking for one", and from what I've read it'd be way out of date if they do fine one. I use Google Maps on the phone in a suitable cradle anyway, and I can just take it with me when I drive a different vehicle.

3) I really can't see any value in having videos playing while I'm driving, quite enough going on to be looking at all around me!

4) Not bothered about streaming services, as I already have a few monthsworth of music or drama on the phone, and don't have any of the streaming accounts so far.

5)The MIB1 is hooked into the car's system and appears to do any of those things it needs to. For further functions I'm weighing up OBD11 or VCDS.

Is there anything else I've missed that should really make me consider an Android Auto unit? I'd also assume that most of the non-Skoda units wouldn't hook up to the car computer.

Have a chat with @pab567 who can hopefully point you in the right direction.

@hubrad if you are fine with using phone in the craddle and you don't intend to use oem sat nav (for MIB2 maps were updated this month, for MIB1 unfortunatly new maps are not available since coupdl of years) and you are OK with featores of your MIB1 Amundsen then it does not make any sense to spend money on upgrading.

Although for myslef Android AUto is must in a car... but it's my personal requiremnt.

Thanks, @pab567 .. I was kinda thinking that way, so you've helped me to resist the shiny temptation! 😀🤞

Android auto is useful for gps and music. I find the sound better than tha standard bluetooth. Maybe something to do with the sound level.

On the other hand, speach récognition is a hastle. I think it's an Android issue as carplay is flawless.

You speak and it just hangs for 20 seconds and records only half of what you say.

I recently got an iPhone for work and dont have this issue on it

I had a similar dilemma. My last company car had CarPlay and I used it with Waze as my preferred satnav app. When I bought my Octavia, I was using my phone in a cradle, but with it connected to the car with BT I didn’t get any audio for the nav instructions. The only way I could get audio was to go into my phone settings every time I started the car and disconnect BT, but then I couldn’t use my phone to make or receive calls easily.

I thought about upgrading to MIB2 but I couldn’t quite justify the expense, as I only wanted it for navigation.

I decided to try a portable screen for CarPlay/ Android auto and found one on Aliexpress for £25.

It works well for my nav app and the phone still work through the MIB1, so all is good.

I did a quick write up in the ‘audio’ section.

That's odd.. my Android phone hooks up fine on Bluetooth to the MIB1, and I can have music playing, occasional directions shouted at me by Google Maps, and it even works to take a phone call!

I keep thinking of trying Waze at some point, but only to see if it's a worthwhile change.
