2.0 PD140 vs 2.0 PD170

Featured Replies

Good morning Skoda fans.

Has anyone experienced the above engines? Both the 140 and 170?

I'd like opinions as I am considering the 170 but am hearing mixed reports on it

I am wondering whether its best going for the 140 and if I lust after more power get it remapped?

Any opinions appreciated,

140bhp + remap is what I'm currently thinking, also. How does remapping affect warranty ?

the way it affects your insurance premium....badly!

More concerned with the engine mate.

There have been some that have said that the 140 is better and a few tests in the car mags that have also suggested this. Then again some on here who have tested the 170 in the VRS say its spot on.

I think its one of these "each to their own" type of questions and it will depend on the driving style of the individual.

I'd simply test both I think and see what found suited my driving style/needs the best - what car are you thinking of having with the 170 in Passat, Leon ??

Edit: I have driven a remapped 140 (upto 180) and that was impressive, drove like petrol.. would still want a try in the 170 and see what potential options were available for that though

walkie, by the sounds of both any equivelant turbo petrol is better. 2.0T is better in the octavia, 1.4TSFI 170PS is apparently fantastic in the golf and the 2.0T in the Leon is also apparently good.

tbh I prefer the way the power is provided with diesels, short and sweet.

I'd imagine with the 1.4TSFI you'd have to rev the nuts off it to get somewhere fast and although it may sound nice and feel good with the needle redlining it will become tiresome, like my MR2.

I am more after a motorway cruiser and imo diesels win in that department.

a friend of mine test drove this engine in the golf GT, and said it was fantastic... the whole point of having the supergharger on it is for instant power and torque without having to rev it, and the turbo to give it balls at the red line! he says best ebgine he's tried for ages... (note: he went to buy the car, and had to give up 'cause he couldn't get the insurance!)

if you want a skoda with the 170 james then it will have to be the vRS and if you want the 140 then the elegance is the one to go for, less sporty but better equiped :)

i'd say get the 170 and leave it standard myself :)

Just out of interest is the 170 just a tuned 140?

What kinna figures would you be looking at after a remap on the 170?

Have the 140 in my elegance, really good engine and quiet pokey. The six speed box is really good to. On my commute to/from work I get 53MPG and this is a mix of motorway/town traffic.

no the 2.0 pd td 170 engine is twin cam 16v

go for the 170!

go for the 170!

Yeh i would.

You could probubly get 220+ bhp after a remap and PLENTY of torque. ;)

*sigh* It's not all about power mate, and you seem hellbent on that

I've heard mixed reviews about the PD170 and a few of them from this site.

bengmiester - tis for an Audi

As it stands I may not be going for either engine now..................... :rubchin:

Thanks for your opinions chaps

On a rr the 140 shows up as putting out 160bhp anyway, so you are not far off the vrs.

Test drive both, and make your own mind up. get what one you prefer, but for the price of the diesel vRS you can get a fully loaded 140.

Are you keeping the MR2 Walkie and buying a second car, or do you just want rid of it?

MR2 is going. I am making a lot more motorway journeys now and the MR2 kills me! Back ache, sore ears, you name it

Its a fantastic drivers car, but its not a motorway cruiser and was not bought to be one, but things have changed - for better :D

So I am after a bit of a sporty diesel that wont murder me on motorways.

06 Fabia? ;) lol

Good luck with your car hunt then.

Dont sell the MR2 without offering me a good deal on it first

Might (very slight chance) be getting a company car myself, although will need to sell furby before I could buy yours...

But on an accurate bench dyno it shows........? ;)

Have you looked at the Mondeo ST TDCI? Plenty of nearly new ones for well below list, more kit than you can shake a stick at, and they're just at home on twisty B roads as they are at munching up motorway miles :D

Chris

The 170 won't really remap much as it and the 140 share a gearbox with a torque limit of 350Nm IIRC.

PD170 you will have to drive for yourself as it's like an old school derv turbo and pretty brutal in it's power delivery. Derfinately a love it or hate it engine.

Me i love it.

Focus TDCI 2.0 is a cracking engine too :)

The PD140 is 16v also. I think twin cams is standard for multivalve engines now.

The turbo on the 170 is bigger

The injectors in the 170 are piezo so they are quieter in operation

Obviously the ECU is mapped differently too

Apart from that and a few upgraded bits and pieces, it's very similar to the 140 as far as i'm aware.

I've read loads of reviews on both engines and the concensus of opinion seems to be that the 170 isn't enough of an improvement over the 140 to justify the additional cost and poor fuel economy. A better bet is to buy a 140 elegance and re-map it. Having said that, if you want the vRS look, it would cost a clean fortune to sort out the body kit on an elegance to make it look like a vRS.

So is my 140TDi :)

I have a feeling that this figure refers to the DSG cars. It
