Was he trying...?

Featured Replies

On way back from work tonight a Mondeo ST24 was level with me going round a roundabout onto dual carriageway. When we exited we both accelerated up the hill, me in inside lane, him in outside. From 2nd gear- 20mph ish up til I backed off due to traffic ahead- say 90mph in fifth he couldn't pass and look well ****ed. Do you think through the gears the Fabia Vrs is as quick as a V6 Mondeo, or was he caught a bit of guard? His face was a picture:P

Is this a joke?

Nope. Thats what I mean- didnt think it was possible

ST24's are only 167 bhp, but weigh half as much again as a Fabia, so it should p!ss all over it in all fairness. Have driven quite a few ST24's and the ST200 [not the new ST220] and they're very smooth but feel quite gutless especially next to a vRS Fabia.

They weigh 1900kg?

so maybe he was yes

ST24's weigh the same as a vRS

a fabia vRS might make the same bhp but it makes it for a much shorter period of time at a much lower rpm so isn't really as useful as the ST24's bhp. but it would be close i think, if it had been an ST200 then no chance.

Everyday driving. I doubt there'd be much difference between a chipped vRS and the ST200. On the motorway and beyond the speed limit. It would be a different story.

The ST200 weighs a hell of a lot with all it's packed extra's.

ST24 weighs 1336Kg 167bhp 220Nm 0-60 8.0

ST200 weighs 1372Kg 202bhp 235Nm 0-60 7.7

my money would still be on the ST200 over the fabia even remapped.

My money too. But not in everyday driving, like a quick sprint.

I personally thought the ST200 weighed a lot more than that.

Had a 2.0 petrol new shape Mondeo estate up behind me once over a similar speed range as you quote. I didnt gain much on him, maybe a car length at most. He pulled out to overtake at the 30mph point (we were just leaving a 30 limit into an NSL), then pulled back in behind me as I floored it and he didn't have the oomph to get past.

Was up a very slight incline.

HTH.

A few miles on I waved him past as he drove right on my bumper after I slowed back to 60 and was doing my head in.

thats a 130 odd bhp 2.0 though :P

I thought they were a bit more than that? 150?

Anyway, just recountin' my tale!

:D

I was reading Pistonheads the other night and they are all pretty impressed over there with the Fabia which one of their regular 'funrunners' takes out.

They were saying ok it's a little diesel hatch but the midrange is really where it is quite amazing...people in 172/182s and even an Elise were mighty impressed how it pulled, IIRC the Elise and 182 were only making significant ground up on the twisties. Ok, it might well have been holding them up on the straights as well to some extent but none of them could get past it on single carriageways.

Bear in mind a lot of these Fabias seem to be putting out 140-145hp stock too, which is a fair bit more than the 'claimed' output.

Maybe the pistonheads guy has a particularly good example...

That's the diesel one (which has no problem keeping up with a vRS ;)). The petrol is 150bhp 16v lump I think.... :D

Load of balls :P :rofl::rofl::rofl:

:iagree: Tis I am afraid.

Alright, I give in! :P

IMO due to personal experience the st24 would be close in comparison to a remapped fabia, maybe he was in the wrong gear coming off the roundabout?

As said, the 200bhp ST200 would probably pass a remapped fabia Just!!

Having said that a clio 172 happened to be behind me at the lights coming home from work 2 days ago and he pulled into the R.H lane. We set off and changed up till 3rd gear approaching another set of traffic lights with an exit just after on the left. It was dead even he wasn't gaining and i wasn't dropping, turned out he needed my lane and thought he'd get across.

What he didn't expect was him having to drop back, brake and pull behind me.

With that comparison in mind, a 172 should be quicker to 100 than an st200!

We need an airfield and a selection of willing volunteers from 'insert forum name here'...

Maybe.

I would be interested to see an MR2 against a Fabia vRS in a roll-on. I'm not just saying that to bait walkie, I just would like to see if the extra torque of the vRS makes up for the significant weight advantage that the MR2 has.

From 40-100 say.

a fabia vRS ain't beating a 172 without serious mods.

Thats what I would tend to think also.

I'd be interested in bringing my car to that!

Standard Black Fabia vRS. Honest ;)

Just gone from a 98 (Mk2) 24v Mondy to the Fabia. Mondy all about revs. Had variable inlet manifold control and once above 3500 it used to fly and did not stop going until bouncing off the limiter. Felt like it would rev forever. One thing I really miss is the V6 off-beat sound and really wringing its neck every now and again.

Fabia quicker up to 70/80 but then the Mondy came on really strong and did not stop going. On A and B roads fabia is quicker point to point.
