Just to throw in MY standard fabia vrs figures, RUN 1 = 144bhp, RUN 2 = @ Marlin RR Day 139bhp... (many at the Marlin Day actually mentioned that figures were a little lower than expected).

so it's not just me that has had over quoted figures from rolling roads......maybe the way we used to run the engine brought out the full potentail of the engine?

I don't think the insurance companies would be bothered about +- 10% in engine performance seen as they are totally standard. Maybe they are, but what are they going to do about it?....its standard, maybe the insurance company should set policies on engine run in :)

Plus, these things are like population vs height, they will always give a Bell Curve (although alot less variation with engines due to limiting factors), the engines as a total will average over 130bhp as if they was averaged 130bhp then some engines would not meet the spec. and then the manufacturer would be in trouble (well if people noticed they would)So you will have a small amount of engines over the 130 by alot say 140bhp and also a small amount of engines with 130 bhp and then the rest will be in the middle say 135bhp ish.

just my 1 p worth

Has anyone here actually tried a head to head, with say a 172, from a standstill? I don't doubt that a remapped PD130 Fabia is a pretty nippy car, but I think the reason why people often think they have comparable performance to the likes of CTRs and Renaultsports is because such cars have to be ready, at about 5krpm to be able to do anything. The furby will kick hard in 3rd off a roundabout, i.e., the usual gear you'd be in anyway, whenas the CTR / RS would need to be making an effort to be in the rev band. By the time they're catching up it'll be 80mph-ish, at which point anyone in their right mind would back off anyway on the public roads.

It's also worth pointing out that a relatively small apparant difference in acceleration requires a large increase of power to match. Anyone who has been on a trackday and tried overtaking a quick car which decided they didn't want to be overtaken will know what I'm on about.

ahhh, facts and figures, it's great to be back on briskoda ;-)... LOL.

People who floor it when I go to overtake them and then slow down are the nearest thing to a red rag to me that there is on the road.

Much like people that sit on my *** all the way through a thirty limit so close I cant see their number plate are a red rag to me!

In the example I quoted I didn't give you the full story. I slowed down to let him by as there were cameras round the next bend, Mondeo man flew through those with brake lights ablaze :)

Back to the facts and figures though...

What's to say the ST24 that the OP mentioned wasn't a 200,000 miler struggling to push out 145hp?

I wouldn't do that, John, but I might come off a roundabout on your outside and go to overtake you. What often happens (and I inferred from your post) is that the person on the inside puts their foot down wanting "a race". My reaction in these cases is usually to say "fair enough" pull in behind, and continue at the same speed. But what do you know, suddenly the racer finds they don't want to go that fast any more - cue lots of frustration :D

Fair comment, Nick

How bad is the equipment used to build these engines that they have such a great margin of error  You'd think with their hi-tech plant and their German engineering that they should be consistent ;)

which is why I stated that it's most likey to be run in that creates the power differences! But still even in the sophisticated world of today nothing is 100% accurate.

I don't work in engineering and I know tolerances are really high but still variation occurs, maybe a bit of exageration but was just stating the reasons for the abnormal power people seem to get.

anyway, I'm going with what BOTH rolling roads said, but it's never on my mind when driving.

plus it's my 2 pence worth this time christopher, just glad i'm not dring my old mondeo 2.0tdci what a bag of **** that was :)    :P ;)

Nick, thats spot on what you said about pulling over and then keeping up with them, do it everytime when they try to race, they don't like it one bit.

I'd say it's most likely the fact that you're working out flywheel horsepower by measuring power at the wheel/road interface (not even driving the hubs directly) and guestimating transmission losses ;) I suspect that Skoda/VAG do a lot of stress testing of their engines which causes them to run in rather quicker than your average road car

Love your comments about my bag of **** - you have a cracking sense of humour :rofl::rofl::rofl:

I know we do have a bit of banter between us, maybe it's the name? maybe it's the differing views? but god damn are we funny at it :thumbup:

Who said that? :P

My Dad's bigger then your Dad

Funny, I thought the power/torque figures for the Fabia VRS were exactly the same as for the 130 Superb?

I'm sorry but you thought wrong: List of Volkswagen engines - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Don't get me wrong I like the Superb (it's my fave pool car at work - better IMO than the A3 2.0tdi we've got), I'm simply saying that comparing it to the ST TDci is a chalk and cheese comparison.

Took me ages to find that link - next time everyone should just believe everything I say!

You're not paying attention to my posts then cos I posted that link a couple of days ago :P:rofl:

I know RR figures can be out, but pre first remap my Octy was measured at 188bhp on Star's rollers - 216 bhp after :D:D - which is I think a fairly typical figure for just a remap.

Ah, I never listen to anything you say Chris

Edit: Back on topic VW group spec their engines with a +/- of 5%.

That's 50 horses in a Veyron :D

Would the 6.0l TDI fit in my Octy? WOW 500bhp

Well you've a good sized boot so it might!

He was more than welcome to overtake- I wasn't looking for "a race", neither was I goading him into anything. I backed off when approaching traffic ahead, let him pass and then continued on my way. Should I not accelerate away from roundabouts incase someone thinks that I am trying to race them? I raised the issue as a matter of interest, not because I beat him in a "race".:o

My post was aimed at people who insist on racing me when all I want to do is overtake. It wasn't specifically aimed at you but if the cap fits ...

Of course you're welcome to accelerate; hell, I do, the point was about people who only do that to p*ss off people legitimately overtaking them.

You did say "his face was a picture" with some glee ...

  • Author

Yes I totally agree apart from the if the cap fits part, because it certainly doesn't.:thumbdwn: All I meant by his face being a picture was the Q car factor that I feel all VRS have- whether it be Octavia/Fabia. Noone expects such a turn of speed out of "a Skoda:eek: ".

I'm simply saying that comparing it to the ST TDci is a chalk and cheese comparison.

Nah, it's not like comparing chalk and cheese, its more like comparing chalk and granite, or cheddar cheese and wenslydale with cranberries.

Chalk and cheese comparison would be like comparing the Fabia VRs to a condom, both completely different things (although both often have kn*bs in them!;) :P )

That was a JOKE do not take offence fabia drivers!

So you can see an improvement of 28bhp (peak) which is probably a more important figure than the actual before and after values, imho ;)

And  at John's post!

Fair point on the comparisons. I'll settle for Edam and Davidstow Cheddar what with them sharing characteristics but being different enough in their intent for it to be apparent.
