Fair insurance offer for an 06 VRS?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

My insurance company are in the process of making me an offer for my 06 VRS after they declared it being uneconomical to repair.

I just wondered what the concensus is on here regarding what constitutes a fair price?

It's completely standard and in black with low mileage - approx 4500miles.

I think they are going to 'start the bidding' at £11,295. Would you be happy with that???

never accept first couple of offers;) and you can always tell them to just replace the car like for like and see what it cost them!!:)

Yes , that sounds more than fair.

Brokers like broadspeed are doing them for 11750 inc metallic and most dealers would get very close if you turned up waving cash.

That's a payout of less than £500 below the cost of a new car after 6 months and 4.5k miles of use - pretty decent.

It depends on the terms of your policy. If you were the first registered keeper and it was declared a total loss in the first year of cover many companies will just replace the car.

Have I missed something here - what happened to your car??

Thanks guys.

I'm intent on not accepting a first offer as that seems to be the done thing, but ,saying that, I don't want to be unreasonable. I don't think I'm going to buy a replacement right now so I'm simply after as much cash back as possible.

Stu - It was in a bit of a bad accident I'm afraid. Nothing that could be helped, and through no direct fault of anybody, but it ended up off a dual carriageway and head on into a 'motorway style' sign. There wasn't much of the front end left I'm afraid. That said, the damage stopped at the cabin and the car did a pretty good job of protecting the driver. The paramedics were impressed with the build quality and apparently said they'd presumed it was a Golf because they've never seen something stand up to that impact so well.

Thats a good enough price, Simpsons offered me a brand new black one with multi disc for

I would be pretty happy with an opening offer like that. As Stu said- the vast majority of policies automatically replace the vehicle in year 1.

Depends on what your excess is and wether that is still to be deducted from their offer? I would be trying to get a 'broker' price + your excess, so no loss to your self ;)

I'm in a similar position myself unfortunately. Mine was an 05 in black with no options, 22k on the clock.

I'm hoping for around

What you want is to be able to replace your vehicle. Have you checked your policy for the clause I mentioned?

That doesn't include the deduction for my £250 excess so the real offer is £11045.

I want a little more to be honest. The offer is based on a skoda dealer 45miles away selling a similar vehicle that is in silver for £11,295. However, mine was black and the cheapest black one is £11,699 - but it's in Bristol!

Would I be cheeky to ask for halfway between the two, e.g. £11.5k???

Shop around, www.drivethedeal.com can get you a new black one for £11500, I know they use Simpsons of Colne, so ring the dealer direct. As I said on an earlier thread, I was offered a new black one with CD multichanger for £11400:thumbup:

No reason why you cant get another new car out of it, even with an extra thrown in!! go for £11500:)

Not as yet Stu, but I don't think I'll be replacing to be honest.

I'm not sure about getting another vrs now with the new model almost 'around the corner'. My old one seemed relatively unaffected by the dreaded stutter and I'm not convinced I may be so lucky 'second time around'. I have another car so I may just look to hold onto the cash for six months or so and then see if I fancy chopping what I've already got in and stick the cash with it.

Slightly skewed logic but it's working for me! However, I have just seen an RX8 at a Suzuki dealer for

Thats cheap, but they drink fuel, and oil. have no torque, and are not as fast as you may think. One couldnt get past my re mapped VRS on a mile stretch of road. I was really surprised!!:)

yeh, I've never been interested in them. I was just surprised to see one so 'cheap'. Think I'll hold out till the summer and see what I can do about getting an octy vrs instead.:)

I do like the Octy VRS but its quite a big car,

I take it you dont need the economy of the diesel anymore then?

Not particularly. I never do big miles. I got the fabia for the purchase price and performance, the fact it was a diesel was a side issue really.

I don't know, I'm thinking out loud really. I don't want to plough my money straight back into a fabia at the moment though, that's for sure. The rumoured ltd edition might tempt me back however.;)

for 12 grand I'd go and buy a 964 :)

When you accept the offer, dont forget that if the car is under finance with a HP company rather than a personal loan that you will need to pay them the oustanding balance. In year one this is likely to very close to the purchase price of the car because most policies have the charges front loaded.

Thanks for that but luckily I'm hp free!:D

Update!

Just had a revised offer back from insurers for

Were either of your cars a close call as to whether or not they were written off. If yes PM me as I know someone :D :D who might be interested in the salvage & Im sure you will get a few quid for your trouble.

I've no idea mate. I didn't think I had the rights to the vehicle once I'd had my compensation anyway. Is that incorrect?

The car remains your property until you have agreed a figure. At that point you can ask if you can buy it back, what you pay obviously depends on how bad it is & also which categorie they give it.

Caregory A I believe has to be destroyed in its entirety (whole car crushed) Cat B can only be used for spares so neither worth buying But C & D are worth looking at.

Cat C & D are both deemed repairable, C is for the worst damaged & will require a vehicle Identification check when repaired, its to make sure that major parts arent stolen, they also have a quick look at how its repaired as well. You can drive it without the check but you will have major problems if you try to sell it as it will be noted on Swanseas records & they wont issue an updated log book to the new owner without the check.

Cat D usually only requires an Engineers report if thats required by the new Insurer as proof of roadworthyness, some only ask for a new MOT.

A Cat D shoud be around 25% of the settlement figure.

All will show up when a prospective buyer does a HPI check so it will always have to be sold on at well under market value so its not a path to riches, it just a way of getting a cheap motor & if repaired properly is as good as any other car
