been looking around the forums for a bit and noticed the arguement between 4x4 and rs owners about respective pros/cons and performance. we all know the performance of the cars in the dry, skoda told us and so does pretty much every magazine review.

can we have a new test pls people. Could we get a wet weather test please, if for no other reason than just seeing the differnece that 4x4 actually makes and if it is worth it.

my car is the first 4x4 i've ever driven so i can't comment about other 4x4's, it's also the first car i've driven properly with more than 100bhp so i myself am suitably impressed with the performance both wet and dry.

when i tried my car in the wet i stopped on an open section of the local tesco carpark(notorious for being slippery), turned off the esp, revved it up to 4k~ and dropped the clutch. the result was a little bit spin from the front wheels then when the cluth brought the back into play the car just moved with no hesitation or wheel spin, just like in the dry.

be nice to get people testing this using all types of octy- diesel, rs, 4x4, normal 1.8t, 2 ltr, etc

now go people, floor it in the wet!!

What have you done? Uttered the unutterable, mentioned the unmentionable...

I'll be back in a couple of weeks...

Hi Bengie,

booked up for the Briskoda track day? Plenty of cars to test plus exclusive use of the Bruntingthorpe circuit.

I'm sure there'll be a wet part of the circuit somewhere.

Checkout the "Events " forum.

Cheers.

Adrian.

My current car'd whoop you in the wet, apart from off the line :D

My new one wouldn't be far behind :D

How's that for unbiased? :D

Seem to recall a black Octavia vRS showing up some Imprezas on a wet track - and they've proper AWD! :D

Bengie,

:) You have in a few lines summed up the one thing I sorely miss from my previous Octavia ( it was a chipped 4x4 ). Wet weather launches :D Mind the clutch though ;)

The ESP controls the stability, the fact you had virtually no spin is thanks to the HALDEX controller. It senses rotational slip and diverts power, faster than you can sense it. The ESP controls if you like the yaw and slew of the car. Try it on a roundabout, build up the pace, but then try and provoke it WITH ESP ON, you should sense the dinky car hand sensation, thats the ESP.

Now I have the RS and yes wet weather line depatures are not as much fun....but I am getting alot more exercise whilst driving. I'll not have a bad word said about them, they are very safe and practical motoring, even when chipped and thrown about in a loony fashion. The rest is as they say open to debate :D

Glad you enjoy the car, personally I would strongly suggest the meet, the handling and speed course teach you alot about your car...totally safe to the point no cars or shopping trolleys will be coming the other way. Since passing my test I like to think I have learnt to drive...I have learnt to survive, however since taking to track I have learnt what this car will and can do if needs be. Thus when little miss or mr muppet pulls out I know what I can and can't stand a chance of achiving.

My current car'd whoop you in the wet, apart from off the line :D

Even in "limp home" mode? ;)

the meet sounds good, didn't know about it, only had my car about 2 weeks and only been on here a few days. and colin, how does your rs cope if you floor it round/out of a corner?? does it spin much or does it just go, so far thats what my car has done - brilliant motoring!!

 could this be true... Jon turning TDi?

and what makes you think a octy tdi would be any faster than a fabia? :D

It is indeed true! We are turning him to the dark side at last!

Oh the shame of it. ;)

Longer wheel base so it'll be more stable...which means it'll be able to go faster... :P

....and we all know what happens when ickly baby fabias try to play with the big boys....

Octy vRS is fastest apart from on wet launches... anyone who says different is lying up to running on snow/ice and to be fair if you are arsed about that buy a bloody landrover..

..as for which vRS Octy is fastest....well that little debate will be settled at brunters..... fastest man down the 2 mile straight takes the respect... and the money...

remember its not how you stand by your car.......

A gearbox NOT borrowed from chocolate boy? :P

Yes, I am going diesel :(

Yes, it will be staying standard :(

Yes, it will last longer than the RS and be cheaper to run :D

As to will it be faster than a Fabia, doubt it very much unless its wet and there are corners involved :D
