Diesel Types

Featured Replies

Are there different types of diesel, like there are of proper fuel? I get my first ever diesel car at the end of next week, so thought I'd better ask in advance.

Thanks for your help

If you believe BP, yes. Otherwise there is just the agricultural (read: lower tax) kind and normal plebs kind. And they only differ in colour.

I have found that BP Ultimate does make a slight amount of difference in smoke and noise levels. Millers Diesel Power Plus also helps in those departments and adds some more power too! ;)

Shell have apparently developed a new Diesel which they are only selling oop north at the minute from what I have heard. Supposed to be like BP Ultimate, but normal Diesel prices.

Cool, so I can run it on cheap and cheerful City diesel then, with no adverse effects?

Why the hell am I even asking? I mean, you can run the damned things on chip fat so I doubt its going to make much difference

it probably only matters for the rear-view... and the ones driving to close behind you :D

Jon, use the new Shell stuff if you can find it. Supposedly equal to BP ultimate but Shell didnt increase the price when they introduced it.

I've been running a 2 tanks of Shell / 2 tanks of Tesco Sludge routine in the works van, and so far the Shell stuff gets better economy. Between 30 & 50 miles extra to a tank so far ;)

Sorry for the off-topic, but has the tavia vrs gone then ?

or is it a p/ex for a oil-burning tavia planned for next week ?

I think the whole diesel community is looking up to you as the beta tester for getting more horses out of the ol' diesel :D

Well, I am anyway

It'll be staying standard :(

How much can you tune an SDI anyway? :( :(

I found using City diesel, in my previous Octy TDi, actually gave less mpg and a slight drop in performance.

Since when did a SDi turn out 130bhp in standard form? ;):D

Jon, was that comment personally directed towards me?

Why, thank you for your concern.

However, I think NOT!! :P

starts collecting list of alibis for not turning up to the national trackday meet

So Colin, my humble Octy SDI estate v your firebreathing Fabia? Fancy your chances? :D

I was going to ask the same question.... he is known for it, you know ;)

Hmmm....bugger :(

My nasal passages are still detecting a rodent though.... ;)

1.4 tavia RS lookalike sound familiar?!

Is this another masterclass in the 'French School of Rebadging' ?! :D

But then if we're rollerskates due to the fabia / diesel combination, surely you're going to become a skateboard (still rollerskated, but with elongated body) ?

Shhhhhhh :D

SDI ?? Why does that somehow not sit true with me?

Anyway...to the subject in hand. Diesel supplies are similar in useage to your petrol stuff.

Supermarket..........the worst you can buy, will probably smoke more, give less performance and economy and the biggest chance of tank debris and water to bugger you up.

Branded stuff.............Your best bet for overall performance, economy, reliability and ease of use, but only downside is its more likely to smell more than City Diesel (supermarket esp Sainsburys) and the pump will probably be less clean (matters a lot when its on your hands/shoes).

As for the fuel itself...

City Diesel is the cleanest at the tail pipe and when putting it in, however economy and performance drops slightly.

Normal diesel is smellier but performs marginally better.

Ultimate.....havent used it yet and probably wont. I find the recommended amount added to the tank at filling times of Millers to be more than adequate to improve smoke, performance and economy.

Diesel fuel sold in this country is cleaner than that sold in say France, as we have removed much more of the Sulphur than most others. This makes it less economical as a fuel, reduces the lubrication of the fuel pump and bits (sulphur is a lubricant in the fuel which Millers overcomes and lubricates) but makes for a cleaner fuel and thus better on the enviroment.

You can therefore find various grades of suplhur reduction in diesel sold today, from City diesel, low sulphur and ultra low sulphur. In the car I add Millers, but in the van 80 ltrs in gone in 4 days max.

Basically, stick with say Esso or something of that standard and you wont go far wrong.

ps...why is it BP garages usually have the dirtiest diesel pumps?

I've got to the "couldn't give a ****" stage with buying diesel now. If it's cheap I'll have it. Its normally city diesel for me as JS has a garage near my work plus I get the nectar points... Beyond that unless I can really make a difference I'll not be shelling out an extra 6 pence a litre for the honour of BP ultimate... (when it drops down to normal prices, or close, I may rethink)
