is it worth doing a oil, oil filter change every 5k?

i do my regular 10k service's but is it worth doing a oil and oil filter change in between(5k). or should i just keep to the normal 10k. can i get pro's and con's please.

With modern synthetic oils think it would be a waste of money if you had another oil/filter change in between assuming that you had the oil and filter done at 10k. If you were doing the job yourself then its your personal choice, personally I would keep to 10k

Not unless you give some serious beans on a day to day basis.

renewing the oil and filter more regularly than the service interval will not do any harm to the engine and may benefit it in the long run

Air filter - supposed to be 40k, changed mine at 16k (just after purchase), will be doing every 20k. Similarly with all other service items will do them a bit earlier

All my diesel cars have had interim oil changes.

For the sake of roughly £40 it gives me peace of mind, knowing that they all get ragged pretty frequently.

If you look at it that it is less than the cost of a night out every 6 months, and the car always seems to appreciate it, it is well worth it imho.

After seeing a standard paper filter after 10k, I think I'd be changing it even more frequently!!! One of the reasons I got my K&N was because, for the mileage I do, it would actually work out cheaper over 2-3 years to have a washable filter rather than replace the paper item every 10k.....

I used to enjoy lying under my car getting filthed up with oil,thinking I was being a conscientious owner.Now at 43,I can't be arsed.Life is too short.If it ain't broke,don't fix it.Stick to the recommended intervals,use the best oil you can afford.

The oil change interval is there of a reason, thats why it states 10,000 miles. The oil would probably go on for another 5,000 miles beyond this before it gets ropey. The oils that are used are tested to their full limit to see what they can stand day after day.

The most worrying part for me is the cam belt change not the oil interval, after Diesels can go on to well over 100,000 miles and still be in good nick.

The oil that VAG use is good quality stuff, so really your wasting

If you do loads of short journeys then I would change it if you are doing it yourself......oil degrades quicker with short journeys.

Having just done this on my PD100 I'd say yes, car seems to appreciate it (seems a bit smoother) and it's only £40ish quid plus an hour of your time. I also cleaned my air filter, which may be worth doing while you're changing oil...

Saying that, my cars done 105k and gets driven hard quite a lot and I do loads of short journeys.

its a waste of money imho its an oil burner not a race car

My mate has an audi and the oil change light doesn't come on until 20,000 miles.

That's with longlife oil. My A3 did 24k on one longlife service, but the difference after a change was dramatic.

in most states in the US they change oil every few thousand miles!!....they have these wee shops that try to out do each other with who can do the fastest oil change!!...its like going to a maccy D drive thru!!

Dont forget that Diesel itself is a lubricant which is another reason Diesels last longer than petrol.

Changing before the stated milage really is OTT. Ok if your planning on keeping the car for the next 10-15 years maybe it would give you some benefit however as most people change their cars between 3 & 5 years this hardly seems economical & it doesnt need it!

New oil= GOOOD, cant get enough of it.

and as stated before- £30-40 for peace of mind is nothing

40k is a bit long to change the air filter IMHO, changed my at 16k too, in some of my past car manuals it advises to change the filter more frequently if the car is operated in dusty - heavy traffic environments. Dont know how Skoda came to the 40k figure as the air filter just looks like any other. I tend to change my oil a couple of thou. before its due.

isnt it true though that the car will be running without oil pressure for those few seconds when starting after an oil change so too frequent changes are a bad thing ???

I used to change oil every 5,000 miles, but now, just use a good synthetic oil and leave it for the 10,000 miles. I do a lot of motorway miles anyway rather than short distance. It stops being convenient to do quick and frequent oil changes when you have to drag the under shield off every time.

When you change the oil you should try to fill up the oil filter with new oil then put it back on (difficult on mine as its horizontal so can only fill it up so much before anything spills out.

Doing this really does reduce the time for the oil to fully circulate.

hmm, to be honest, I dont think the time involved is drastically outwith the engine's design specs-ie you do the same time every time you start the car from cold (apart from fill the filter)

I thought that some engines hold the pressure in the main oil line to stop the millisecond of having no oil.

The turbo is the most critical part to run without oil but i think it gets its oil straight from the filter and not from the rest of the oil ducts so it effectivly gets filtered oil all the time so filling the filter first probably helps but when its under pressure it will fill in probably less than a second.

I wonder if the chaps in the dealers fill the filter first?

When I change the oil on the Mrs car the oil filter can be brimmed (i.e. you screw it in vertically) no under tray to remove I can change the oil in less than 5 mins (most time spent jacking up the car).

The Fiat Coupe is a nightmare to change the oil filter the tray has to come off and then its hidden away right beside the Turbo you have to use a filer removal tool to get at it as its extremely tight.

The Pug 306 Diesel was the easiest Ive ever seen open the bonnet oil filter easily accessable from above and then off with the sump plug - probably about a 5 min job too.
