V-Power Diesel in the Fabia Vrs

Featured Replies

Just dropped by shell and noticed they had V Power Diesel at the pump so decided to drop a full tank of it in seen as though it was 99.9 pence/litre compared to Diesel Extra at 93.9 pence/litre

Anyone noticed anything different with performance and economy with this stuff in their fabia vrs??

The other thing is I still had some fuel in the tank, prob about 10litres worth...so will this stuff mix with the vpower and dilute its performing values??

I would be annoyed if the price went up that much

IMHO Shell Diesel Extra = VPower

Cheap Shell Diesel should be significantly cheaper :(

In Marcham the SDE was about 97.9p/liter IIRC

I wouldn't bother with any fancy diesel. A diesel engine cannot tell the difference between types of fuel, that's what they're designed for - originally to run on peanut oil.

They have no lambda sensor so always inject the same amount every time (depending on load, temp etc etc). It's nothing like putting in higher octane fuel etc in a petrol which CAN sense the quality of the fuel through knock sensors and exhaust gas sampling when in closed loop.

High quality diesel fuels do tend to contain more detergent additives though and lower levels of sulphur which are beneficial but you wont notice these +'s after just a couple of tanks.

Turning down the EGR is a better option as it increases combustion temps which helps to burn off carbon deposits and improve combustion efficiency meaning more of the fuel injected is burnt rather than spat out of the exhaust.

EDIT: One other benefit that higher quality fuels may have in terms of performance is a higher cetane rating which marks the fuels ability to burn under compression. The higher the rating, the lower the flashpoint and the more readily the fuel will ignite. Handy for high revving diesel engines.

I could well be wrong, but isn't sulphur a good lubricant so it would be more beneficial in the engine if it had higher levels (ignoring the nasty emissions)? Can't remember if Millers has sulphur in it....

Chris

I think it used to help lubricate the old injector pumps but produces sulphur dioxide (a nasty emission) and also affected cylinder bores badly on some engines resulting in a loss of compression.

New engines don't need it especially the PD as the injectors pressurise the fuel.

Edit: And Sulphur dioxide is acidic so when diluted with water (also a byproduct of hydrocarbon combustion) it makes sulphuric acid. Nice!

Edit 2: I once spoke to a taxi driver who said diesel engines do such high mileage because of the fuel type that helps lubricate them. I have my doubts about such things as I know that overfueling in petrols causes bore wash. If diesels inject so much less fuel (running as lean as they do) then I doubt it could lubricate many engine components other than those prior to it hitting the cylinders themselves. That covers the injector pump and the pickup pump.

On newer engines you have the pickup pump and then the high pressure pump (on common rail engines) or the PD injectors on Pumpe Duse engines.

what should one get from a tank in a Fabia VRS Special?

Puzzled as trip say 53mpg - Showing 10miles till empty but only 378 miles covered - filed up 40 liters is this right?

The computer is a bit optomistic...

:iagree:

Mine's about 2-3 mpg too high, but I've seen far worse than that on some other vRS's.

i put some of the fancy diesel fuel in my 100bhp tdi Fabia when i had it. To me it made no difference whats so ever. best way to get better fuel economy is through mapping or a chip,

when my dad put a chip in his old comfort tdi he could get 65mpg easily

My first ever tank was last thursday until I filled up with the Vpower stuff, It had done 360 miles when the light came on with a full tank of 40 litres - not as economical as I thought but maybe because it's a new car and needs running in?? But saying that I did do a lot of town driving in the last few days.

To be honest that's not far off being about right.

Long runs help a fair bit too.

I usually get about 380 miles before the light comes on, and that's driving it "enthusiastically". :D

Give it time to run in a bit and then see what it can do. The engine will still be tight.

380 miles  i get almost 500 out of a tank... and i hoof it everywhere :eek:

re: V-Power... dunno if its just me, but the car does feel better.. its a bit smokier but its quieter.. revs better, and pulls very well from 1500rpm all the way round to 4500

it may be because my car is just about run-in now too :D

Have you done the breather mod thingy? I don't push the 'nipple' so don't fill the expansion tank.

Eh? Expansion tank? Breather?

Next time you fill up and it clicks, try pushing the side of nozzle in the 3 o'clock direction. There's a little button there which releases air - You should hear it escaping. This allows you to get more fuel in. I rarely use - perhaps to get

500 miles!?!! wow....any mods to ur car at all? and what sort of roads do you drive on a weekly basis??

500 miles for me would be godsend! I'd only need to fill up twice a month as oppose to my 3.5 times in previous corsa 1.2 if I had that mpg on my vrs

now thats interesting! never knew such a thing existed, is this on fabia's or skoda's only?

All's car will have them in some form or other to allow for expansion of the fuel, i've only seen the little button on the fabia though, also you shouldn't fill the expansion tank on a petrol car as petrol expands alot more than diesel. ;)

I hoof it everywhere and get 500 miles to the tank on a Fabia vRS ??

If I properly hoof it I can get the average < 30mpg - generally though I get low 40s when making decent progress ;)

If i drive in a "spirited" fashion i will get about 400 mpg, if i drive like my Dad (yawnsomely slow) i will get about 500 mpg.

I notice a lot of you that claim these high MPG figures (not 400mpg or 500mpg lol) have modded cars, specifically remapped.

It would appear then that the standard vRS is rubbish on fuel but a remap cures that?

I worked out that 380 miles on 37 litres (which is what I do) is 46.6mpg which is about right. 500 miles on 37 litres is 61.4mpg which is just wrong unless you've disconnected the turbo or are lying about the amount of fuel you've put in.

The 1.4 TDi can perhaps do that but not the vRS.

Believe all the modern Skodas do it - the rest of the VAG lot should as well.

I think you'll find us 500 milers use the expansion tank to put approx 50litres of fuel into the car rather than 40 litres...... As mentioned above when the pump cuts off for the first time use the pump nozzle to push & hold the little spring loaded switch on the right hand side of the filler hole and hold it there whilst you then put another

Mine got 25 mpg on the way to work this morning - but I was going at very significant pace ;)
