Too Late Skoda, here comes KIA!

Featured Replies

The only thing I can see is that it should be in general car chat, not in the fabia 2007 section.

Indeed, thread moved

Oh, and is it a similar thread to this one over 6 months ago maybe?

Well I have had a 3 day test drive of the Ceed 5 door 1.6 TDi 115bhp and I must say that I thought the car was very good - economy I achieved on a brim to brim method was 55mpg.

It has a five speed box with nicely spaced ratios (but a 6th gear would be great on the mways).

The seats are very nice and supportive ditto head rests, they all come with ipod / memory stick connections & dual zone climate controls.

Performance was fine - it has fully independant suspension all round and the brakes are very good (they have additional brake force over & above the std servo).

I guess the main concern with buying an up-and-coming new brand is that you'll be hit hard by depreciation if you get rid of the car in 2-3 years. Maybe the reviews of the Cee'd will help bring up its desirability, but I'm guessing they'll need a hot one to really make a statement.

Will be interesting to see if they steal significant market share from other "budget" brands like Skoda, Daewoo/Chevrolet, etc.

Uuuh Uuuh, Chris :D . That should do the trick, talk about adding wood to the fire

10 years ago I wouldn't have considered a Skoda or Toyota, up to last year I wouldn't have considered a Suzuki, Hyundai, Kia.............................

And now the son has a Suzuki Swift (and I'd have one if I was in the market for a small hatchback again).

Watch out, because the Japs continue and the 'tiger economy' is biting hard.

From the review above, sounds like this car is targetting the people who do more motorway miles that town miles, and want a bit of comfort , and who are not particularly interested in performance.

Will be interesting to see if the 7 yr warranty will entice people beyond the badge.

Corrrr! I could be tempted by the 200 bhp diesel.................and a Kia dealership is 5 mins walk form my house ( London Road ,Larkfield for those who may care..!) :P

That's a nice car, no two ways about it. And if they as reliable as previous Kias then they've got a winner on their hands. If only folk can get over they're badge snobbery!:D

How about their dislike of wheeled sensory deprevation chambers? ;)

It looks good, seems it has a good warranty so must be made well, not sure I see what the problem is. It should be able to be assessed on its merits like anything else. If nothing else, surely what most of us have proven by buying Skodas is that we are open-minded and prepared to look beyond badge snobbery.

;) Note the "most of us".

I think Kia will have a lot of motor manufacturers very worried in the coming months/years.

I guess everything must be relative.

Weren't the Ceed , ProCeed (3 door) and forthcoming cabriolet version all designed by a guy KIA poached from Audi?

As mentioned the Kia dealers I have been to resemble Skoda dealers before VW tried up make them all upmarket.

This is why many that lost the Skoda franchise when they refused to step up took the likes if Kia/Hyundai on instead.

Think also KIA poached someone from VW on the quality standards side of things.

I tried making my own on the Kia website, but those nice wheels that are plastered all over it weren't an option  I will certainly be keeping an open mind.

who the f*ck is this guy?!

I really hope this isn't directed at me as I think its a bit over the top response for what I actually said.

I think it was directed at Mike, but either way, it's not necessary or helpful

Looks and sounds like a good car.... and i am sure it will be well made (if not a little plasticy) if KIA are prepaired to provide a 7 year waranty!!!

I must say it looks a lot like a Toyota corrolla from the front!!

Looks pritty good!!

I think the styling of a lot of these type of cars has come a huge way in the last few years! Hyundia went through a stage of really shonky styling a little while back, but some of their new efforts do look a lot better!

The impression I get from the press releases and articles I've just Googled is that the 200bhp model will be petrol, but there are diesel engines in the line-up. Shame, as they really would have a marketing coup on their hands if they could get an economical high performance car to market 2 years before the new vRS.

The problem is, for Kia, that unlike Skoda you cant say "ahhh but its really a "

A Kia is a Kia, no matter how you dress it up. I'd look at one but I know many many people who wouldnt, based on the name alone.

It's really a Hyundai...

Rob.

Yeah but I don't actually know that many died in the wool VW/Audi buyers that actually switched to a Skoda anyway ... so most of those saying "its really a ...." weren't actually buyers of VWs / Audis - it was just a useful way of deflecting the issue for other buyers trying to deal with the old "stigma" of Skoda.

TBH if you are looking for a "value" car you have to be someone that is willing to take grief from others as the prejudices are usually the main reason why a car ends up good value in the first place.

I am obviously a really tight git going for a secondhand yellow Octy (which was very cheap at the time) ... and yes I did get plenty of gip but I didn't and still don't care :P (... and yes I would consider a Kia if they look good value etc when I come to change my car) :D

Hmmm, not the most intelligent response you've ever made, but you cant always be right I suppose ;)

cut the guy some slack, you'd clearly used the entire briskoda wit quota with your original reply :P and how is similar to your thread from however long ago about the length of the warranty you get with a new kia

anyway, it's a nice looking car

Seem to recall something about how great Kia's were - quite soon after meeting someone who drives one... - strange how these coincidences happen...

Yeah it is a nice looking car. Having worked for Kia and Hyundai, I can understand what you're saying about badge snobbery, however often with them what appears to be value is just cost cutting.

On previous attempts like the original Rio, Accent and the Carins, the paint was shockingly bad, the upholstery was cheap and the overall finish was tinny and plasticy. Not to mention the truly terrible road handling and performance.

True they are getting better, they really excel in the SUV market, there is not a better value choice of off-roaders in the UK. Having personally taken several of them off-road I can tell you they out-perform vehicles twice their price. Although they aren't the cheapest on the market, their likely to be the best value. I'd buy one.

As for their cars, I'd have a long hard look before you decide.
