He's over on Pistonheads...at least I assume it's him, otherwise there's someone else out there with a Welsh-related username posting lots of numbers about a possible future purchase of a range of German diesel hatchbacks. And owns a Fiat Coupe...am sure it's more than just a coincidence... :D

Poor Piston Heads. Perhaps if he ever buys a German uber saloon, he will start pining for a Skoda?

I guess I could point out that my Octy feels a lot quicker up to 60 than their 120D, that might do it.

Ohh i feel dirty

OK, my Hillman Hunter had a much nicer gearchange than any current Skoda:P

Whats the gerashift like on the 1 Series compared to the Octavia , Amanda? Ive only ever driven one BMW and that was an E21 (I think) 3 series 323i , a 1978 model , and that was 20 years ago! I do remember the gerachange felt great to use , but then I was comparing it with an

On the 1 series I have driven the gear change is spot on...

apart from the stupid press twice to get reverse.

Don't know if they've changed their 'box design significantly, but with the last manual BM I drove ('99 523i Touring), I found heading down a little bit towards 2nd, then up and round into reverse worked best. That sounds daft when I type it out, but you might work out what I mean if you try it :o

It should certainly go well, if nothing else :D Did strike me as an issue with them though, interior space...

I've got an invitation to the local dealer's unveiling of the Coupe shortly, so will have a look in closer detail then.

On the reverse issue, I do know what you mean. My Dad had Beemers for years and my Mum always had issues with reverse! So doesn't sound like things have changed :)

Always struck me that their was some sort of 'island' between reverse and 1st. Going too close to that seemed to cause issues, and the stick then didn't engage reverse smoothly or easily. So as you go across for reverse, move down and round slightly, towards 2nd as I said. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it eventually, with practice :D
