Is a BMW 123D the best "World Car" - discuss

Featured Replies

Jag XJR 370bhp does it in 13.5 seconds thats 168% more power & RWD just for 0.5 seconds....

Have you compared the power to weight figures for the jag to your car?

In addition those high powered Jap cars need servicing every 4000 miles -

yet another well founded comment Welshy. You're doing so well today

Perhaps someone can remind me of the service intervals on an Impreza these days?

It is nice to fly past them on towards 165-170mph with a bit of a tail wind - thanks to its very low drag coefficient

Surely that's going to affect your MPG quite badly?

Rob.

You stated Jap cars - well Evo's need 4000 miles servicing, I didnt mention Impreza as thats a 2.5ltr not 2lts so that we can compare like with like.

In a word no.

The comparison is 0-100mph times and required Bhp to achieve it is std road production cars which can seat 4.

Think you'll find MPG on Evo's & Imprezza are really bad - all that extra unrequired weight of 4wd which most people will never actually really need

It was Chris that mentioned Japanese cars :P

Perhaps someone can remind me what the service interval is on a recent 2.0 WRX Impreza ?

The Impreza I was talking about (in the 7k budget) was a 2.0l turbo with similar power. 0-60 in 4.3 seconds and 0-100mph in a shade under 13 seconds. Despite having 4wd, it still has a kerb weight of around 1200kg. Servicing is 7.5k, but what has that got to do with performance? I could say an Impreza is more reliable than a Fiat so therefore it's a better ownership prospect, and it has a decent boot, and will comfortably sit 5 adults and their luggage. But that's nothing to do with performance..........

From my experience 25mpg day to day driving and 30+mpg achieveable on a long run. Can't comment on the Evo. I also drove it using the full rev range and not driving it like I should drive a TDI.

HTH :D

Chris

If you know of a std production car of any age which costs less that

Well that's like me saying the Fiat is rubbish because the wheels look too small... nothing to do with PERFORMANCE!

Plus the Fiat's cambelt service is over a grand too - sounds like that'll sap any money you saved ;)

The wheels are 16 inch std.

But you started going on about how practical the Suburu was with its big boot. I went down the route of interior style in addition I can get 3 golf bags & 2 golf trollys into my boot with a little room to spare. Or a gazeebo a 4 man tent 3 crates of beer food sleeping bags clothes and air matress into the boot - its bigger than you might first think but clearly its no Cavalier/Superb/Vectra/Mondy.

Insurance 10times the cost.

If you look at the 30-70 & 30-100mph times you will see the Fiat is quicker than the Suburu its just the better initial traction thats an advantage it cannot catch.

I think we should all agree that BMWs are fantastic in every way, the 123ABC is the best car ever* (despite nobody having driven one) and people who don't drive them are deficient in some way**.

Right, that's that sorted. Pint anyone?

*Except the Fiat Coupe, which is actually the best car ever.

**Except Welshy

What's that got to do with the fact that driving at 175mph is going to hammer your economy?

Rob.

I tell you what... I have a better idea... Lets just all leave this thread alone shall we as it's going well off thread and getting VERY boring!

PS having had another look at hat picture reminds me just how bad the Fiat Coupe looked... what WAS Bangle thinking?

I think at the time, the Coupe was something a bit different - in much the same was as the BMW Z4. People either loved it or hated it.

Personally I remember loving it when I was a teeneager.

Hmm,

I always thought the outside looked atrocious with those slashes and the back looked like a fridge it was so flat and bulky.

Interior seemed OK though.

The interior was designed by Pininfarina and the exterior by Bangle.

They were all actually built on the pininfarina production line with all the parts delivered to them from Fiat etc. Hence I guess why so relatively few faults with them.

At the time it competed against the Honda Preluda VTi 2.2 (demolished) VW Corrado VR6 (demolished) Honda Interga Type R (demolished and had nearly as good handling) and the Nissan 200SX (again well beaten on performance.

It is a love it or hate it type of car - but noone can doubt it has huge performance & is a bargin.

Also I very much like the Z4 especially the coupe & I also like the Z3 coupe - to give you an idea of my taste.
