Is a BMW 123D the best "World Car" - discuss

I've got an invitation to the local dealer's unveiling of the Coupe shortly, so will have a look in closer detail then.

I forgot to add, you should defo take a trip down for a spin in one, it is an amazing engine. I drove a 328 a few years ago and the 123 feels quite similar. It doesn

Oh yes, I'll be taking them on their offer, certainly :D

Just have to wait for the 130D and maybe even the 135D  - if they're now offering the 135i, in Coupe form at least, there's certainly the room up front for a 6-pot derv...

Then you've just got the badge issue to contend with :P

I can

I was looking at the 123d mSport at the weekend, walked in the end, the salesman was being a touch high pressure for Mrs P.

Glad I did, checked the Broadspeed website and can get almost

its going to open up a whole new level of annoying rep-drivers who will be able to win at traffic light GPs

Na the reps will only get 116/118i models.

The 123D is for Girl racers only.:P

If they do a 4x4 with this engine will it be called a 1234D?:D

Going into pedantic BMW anorak mode, the correct model description would actually be the 123xd :P

Certainly, xi versions of the 3 and 5 are available in the States, but I don't know of anywhere else, strangely. Have been done for some time now (early 90s IIRC), well ahead of the 'lifestyle' approach of Audi's Allroad and Volvo's XC70 cross-over type vehicles. They've always been available as normal looking standard models though, just with 4WD.

Not sure if they're also offered in other markets, but I'm pretty sure there's never been an 'x' model officially available in the UK.

:P

Apart from the X5, X3, X6, X1 etc :D sorry I know that's not what you meant but I like pedantry.

Ah ha, but then again you're confusing 'x' with 'X' Mr Pitt :D

So, for example X5 3.0i, in BMW speak a 'crossover' model of the 5-Series, as opposed to a standard American 5-Series with a 3.0 petrol engine for example; the 530xi.

HTH :P

Steve

you are quite correct mr wardy, most 3 or 5 series i see around here have the discreet "x" on the bootlid. the 1 series is'nt available in Canada (yet) or the US (i think) so not much of a world car really!! :D

Mark

See they've given the North American market the twin turbo 3.0 petrol unit too  (badged 335i/xi). Not sure if it's exactly the same output as the one sold here. I know BMW have a habit of not always giving you lot as many horses as we get from the same engine!

Steve

Actually Mark, on the 1-Series issue - they're releasing the Coupe and Convertible over the pond. In the USA anyway...

Steve

i suspect the 1 will end up here too in due course. will be interesting to see how it does here, the audi a3 is sold here but very, very rare and nobody really bothers with diesel in "normal" cars.

Welcome to BMW Canada

Edit: if i had bothered to look at that link before i posted it i would see that the 1 series is indeed coming here!

Doh!

An important question - Does the Beemer come with ESP, Elanore Safety Protection (for all other motorists :D) ?

I think it's the excitement of getting new toy - plus, as always, 'should I have' :thumbdwn:

I do like the rough and ready Terrano though and reckon I could pick up a 2,000 model fairly cheap, then I could have the best of both worlds:D and sleep again:)

And 2 lots of insurance, tax, breakins, etc :(

Re the sleep - have you tried taking Clooneys ?
