dragon performance box

Featured Replies

Thanks for the replies, i have been out without my hung over head on and managed to get them connected by thinking it through and being gentle

Just been out and really pleased with the results, currently its on setting 5, the only thing i find is that its seems to be searching at about 1800 and 2300 revs on gentle acceleration!!!!

Have any of you found this???

Also where did you house the box??? I have strapped mine to the battery cover by the wishy washy top up pipe!

Thanks

Matt

Yes, mine does exactly this - has nearly caught me out in nose-tail traffic!

Incidently, I have mine on its maximum setting and have never experienced even the slightest puff of black smoke - suggesting my engine may be able to handle a little more fuel. I've recently spoken with Dragon about this and they have offered to "increase the power settings" for me if I return the unit to them. I intend to take them up on their offer and will suggest that they make the new minimum setting=old max giving me another 6 settings to explore. If and when this happens, I'll report back.

Wow didnt know they could do that, think i will stick as i am for the moment. Are you not a little concerned about possibly damaging the engine and other components.

I found my self when driving the car making an extra effort not to boot it at low rpm in a high gear. There is this constant niggle in the back of my mind which is concerned about compramising engine and clutch life!!!!

Maybe/hope it will pass

This is where the remap option pays dividends, as the power and torque are spread nicely over the whole rev range making for a much smoother engine. It's a beast when you boot it and a pussy cat when you want want to take it easy.

I was torn for a while between the tuning box and a remap. After reading this thread and noticing that there is a bit of jerkiness i opted for the remap. After getting rid of my 'stutter', i didn't fancy actually paying to get it back in another form.

In no way can this 'characteristic' of the Dragon unit be compared to the dreaded stutter - it's just a very slight but unexpected increase in acceleration that is occasionally experienced on light load at 1800rpm. I've actually grown to like the effect - it lets me know the unit is working without having to give it some beans.

The pros and cons of both have been discussed many times, but do remember, for a lot of owners, the pros of a good tuning box will always outway a remap.

... and the 'stutter is a very slight but unexpected DECREASE in acceleration that is occasionally experienced on light load at 1800rpm - still annoying though.

I totally agree with you though, that a tuning box is the best option for a lot of people. Ramping up the boost on a high mileage car probably isn't a good idea.

I have my box on setting 6 on a Fabia VRS, on the box design one prior to the current one being sold by Dragon. I only get a puff of smoke if I floor it in 6th, which I try to avoid.

Yeah, that's the box I have - has 7 settings. This style PD box is basically the same for all engine outputs but they are 'mapped' differently before being sent out depending on what you have. From what I've read, most Dragon users do notice a 'little' smoke when the box is maxed out. According to Dragon, this is how you set the unit for max power - up the settings until you get unacceptable soot. As we know, not all PD engines are alike so it's nice to know that Dragon can tweak these units to suit if necessary. They also offer to do this if you happen to change vehicle but are still use same fuelling system, ie PD100 to PD130 or 150...

I think this after care is what makes the Dragon units amongst the best of the plug and play solutions.

Unless you are doing 90mph+ (on your 'private' road), flooring it in 6th probably isn't so great for the clutch. :D

That's why I don't do it.

i guess the jury is out on this one, but let me throw my 2 pennys worth in.

Any decent insurance assesor will be able to download your ECU file and compare with the manufactures standard. Just like comparing a word document for changes. PoP. (Piece of p$$$) I did it with my standard ECU code and my remapped one.

thats actually not true my car was standard ? but when I took it to have it remapped the bloke doing the remap said that it had already been altered from what most FR's were standard (on a 200 mile brand new car).

and there are so many different codes in the range of ECU's that putting one next to the other wouldn't be conclusive,

an 07 Ibiza FR might have a different set of codes to the next 07 FR.

he commented on how my std map was quite simalar to the Polo 130 sport ??

and before anyone says that the bloke doing the map didn't know what he was on about . . . he does know what hes on about as he is a very respected and well known tuner !

Indeed, when I had my PD100 I didn't experience any smoke either. I had mine sent back for the tweaking and they then set it at the absolute maximum possible. To be completely honest, I didn't notice any difference when I got it back though.:o

I got the slight hesitation around the same rpm on gentle acceleration as well, must be characteristic of the interaction between the PD100 lump and that box.

Final thing, make sure the box is located somewhere secure rather than lying loose in a corner somewhere. All that rattling around if it's loose won't do the electronics any good. I had mine attached to my strut brace with cable ties. :D

Does anyone else get a lumpy idle with their Dragon boxes...

Mine idles perfectly - hot or cold. Do you have a digital unit and have you tried disconecting the box to confirm this is the cause of your poor idle?

The idle on mine is fine as well.

All I get is the "jump" at 1800rpm in 2nd gear, thats on a pd 130.

I noticed mine was slightly lumpy on idle but i've since done the cage mod and started to use Millers Sport 4 and it seems to idle a little smoother.

Cheers

Dave.

I've fitted mine between the nearside indicator and the headlight wash filler as can be seen in the piccies below.........

mine is in the same place

Does anyone else get a lumpy idle with their Dragon boxes...

No difference with or without the box fitted for me:thumbup:

My DB is jammed between the battery box and the air box

Just force the battery box back and stuff it in

I have placed the box in the same place. The thing i found the most difficult was organizing how to attach the Box connectors to the engine itself without geting in the way of the other pipes around that area.

If anyone has any ideas i would be very grateful, concerned about rubbing some of the pipes

I have not noticed any extra smoke and went on 150 mile motorway round trip today, 6th gear acceleration is much improved.

Has anybody else noticed that sppeds can be achieved with lower RPM eg 70mph is now about 200rpm lower than before

Matt

that sounds unlikley as it's your gearbox that determines revs/speed not the engine

Just got a Dragon Box.

Has anyone got a pic of an installation with the engine cover removed?

A few posts back...

HTH ;)

Mine's between the washer bottle filler and the airbox, and most seem to have it between the battery and the airbox, but you get the general idea...

I've now mounted mine on to the side of the airbox using a big cable tie.

Looks tidier.
