Octavia vRS 1.8T Red Dot racing remap

Featured Replies

Calling all Skoda Octavia vRS 1.8T owners that have had their beloved cars remapped by REDDOT RACING in Watford.

I have had my car remapped there and it has not been the best experience.

had it done in may and all was great.

went on the RR and had the map on the car giving me 196 BHP / 202 ftlb (car was totaly standard)

went home and drove round ok till sunday when the engine light came on.

I got the VAG-com program (well worth getting) and the cable and got the fault.

MAPPED ENGINE TEMP(usually the temp sensor)

was the fault that kept on coming on at startup after every 5-7 cold starts

got in contact with reddot and arranged to have the map gigged. this did not work as the same fault kept coming back.

had the car returned to standard by reddot for 3 week and the car was once again a pleasure to drive and no faults, only thing missing was the little kick of power.

arranged to go back for a new map (that i payed for) and had it put on. didnt really notice the dif between the new map and standard apart from the fuel econ which was 47 mpg at 65 mph between london and cardiff.

left the car in cardiff for 3 hr and wen to start again and she wouldnt fire up.

these are the faults I got:

These are the troubles I am having

If there is any other people out there who have experienced similar probs please get in touch.

If you have have a very successful remap from them, once again get in touch.

many thanks

billy

I've got to ask. If a company provided you with a dodgy remap, probably at the best part of £350?

Complaining is one thing, going back to them is another, and paying again?????????????

no mate i payed once and kept goin back.

i would of kept goin back till i got a map that was good and one that worked with the car.

now though i wouldnt go back if they payed me to go there.

I am just wanting to know if there are any other people out there with similar probs so I know it is not just my car.

arranged to go back for a new map (that i payed for) and had it put on.

Oh, Ok...

You checked the earth as that first fault sounds like a power problem.

The second one is a memory error and could be caused by the remap not setting the correct sum or a power issue.

I would check the earth's are good, I think one is under the battery cage.

There will be others along who know a lot more than me on this area, but if you don't get it fixed and nothing apart from the map has changed I'd want my money back and a standard image on the ECU.

i used them. the map took a few attempts to get sorted. but it seems to work ok. my only issue is that it wasnt holding boost pressure properly. we replaced the recirc valve and the n75 valve but this didnt help.

so in the end we put a release valve in teh pipe between the recirc valve and the wastegate to regulate the pressure. basically the wastegate was opening up to early preventing boost pressure from building up.

im not sure if this is map issue or not but for now the car seems to be ok. i havent really had any issues but i think a trip to Jabba is in order to get the car checked over and get there opinion on the map.

Did you get this sorted?

Was it a flat battery or iffy earth or something completely different?

Hate to say it but it sounds like a cräp map. I'd get it reset to standard, get a refund and go somewhere decent (IMHO). See if there are any group buys around for Jabba or REVO would be my course of action. As for the putting in a bleed valve between the recirc valve and the wastegate - YEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAA! Hi ho silver, away springs to mind.

well i disagree it's not really a cowboy moment. at the end of the day essentailly we have a manual boost controller in place. I had the usually surging issues that everyone compains about and since iv used this to regulate boost presssure car runs like a dream. I've had no errors since, everything runs sweet and i have the power i wanted.

just becuase it's unconventional doesnt mean it wont work. Also i have a VAG specialist check it out and they said it's fine. the replaced by coilpacks when they went bang and i asked them to look at this whilst they had the car. He commented on the smoothness of the ride and the power that i had and it was all positive.

so basically im happy :)

Indeed. Maps shouldn't need bodges of that sort. Even a very conservative map from one of the main tuners should get you 200bhp and most will give in the region of 220. Go and get it reverted to standard, get your money back if you can, then as Jon says, go to one of the main tuners and get their standard map.

AMD, CustomCode, Impossible, Jabba, REVO * - any of those should give you much better results.

* in alphabetical order

It is a bodge, plain and simple. I have some experience with tuning cars and with a remap you should not have to put in a manual boost controller, that is the job of the map. Having to add some form of manual bleed means that there is a "hole" in the map and it isn't doing its job properly. I don't have a problem with manual boost valves (Dawes device anyone? ;) ) thay have their place - usually as a stand alone, to restrict boost in a competition car or as a supplement to protect the engine when running extreme maps in extreme circumstances.

If you are happy, fine - I know I wouldn't be.....

the reason it's on is becuase of this surging issue that everyone complains about ... when mine started doing it the think we noticed was that boost pressure wasnt holding and for some reason the wastegate was opening to early so basically we have fooled the wastegate into thinking there's less boost then there actually is.

at teh time i was thinking return to standard and see how it goes but it's been fine for a year now and iv had no problems with teh car so iim leaving it.

I don't know that any of the top tuners have had a problem with surging on 1.8Ts for some time now - I stand to be corrected, but I haven't heard of it recently.

Likewise, not heard of surging for a good few years. Mine never did it, just had an erratic delivery until I swapped it for a decent map after 3 days.

I dont know where you guys have been, but there are still conversations floating about with maps from the "top" tuners about surging..

With current maps, or very old ones?

Who's yours mapped by? Any surging problems?

My surges a little when 2/3 throttle and backing off at say 3kish.

Recent apr stage 1. Smooth as you like flooring it through the entire rev range, but a bit of throttle and changing @ 3kish gives a bit of a surge.

There's loads about it on this octavia part if you search.

I have no surging issues no. I have other issues that I do not believe are related to my map.

The map was done through my company.

Im assuming with current maps, as theres been posts about it lately.

Yeah I can use the search facility, and did so. I found one or two references, but not really many that could be directly attributed to maps, and not enough to gather enough of a sample to point at the "top" tuners and say they still have a problem with surging. Sure, 3 years ago, there was some discussion, but I think those problems have been ironed out now. The tuners' reputation would suffer if every car had a problem.

Mine has always done it, but the map is a few years old.

A few people had this with Jabba maps some years ago. As far as I know Mike resolved most of them with a tweak to the map.

Mine is a Jabba map, but still does it so obviously wasnt taken back in.

(map was done before i owned the car)

Red Dot are not far from me!

I would never in a million years get them to map my car

I went to a RR day there a few years ago and that was enough to put me off

I wouldnt tolerate a surging map.. but then i wouldnt have a map that wasnt APR / IP / Jabba

sounds like this RED Dot lot dont know what they are doing...

and as for extra bleed valves im a little intrigued....
