N95 Questions

Well, I did think it was a good time to mention it

I've heard rumours that this N95 device also allows you to take and receive telephone calls?! Can anyone confirm this?

;)

I believe it will do, but only if the absolutely hopelessy $hitty crappy pathetic battery will last long enough to complete the call.

An absolute dog of a phone. It's H U G E, the build quality is bobbins, the battery, (see above), and what ever you do, if you update it off the Nokia website, once you have backed everything upto your memory card, take the memory card out. If you don't, once you have done the update, your memory card will be locked and need a password that you have never set to open it!! If your lucky at this stage you might get away with formatting your memory card, (and subsequently losing everything!) If your not so lucky then you will only be able to fix your memory card with a new one! Nokia are aware of this problem, but they refuse to admit it is a problem with their update software, or indeed their dodgy product!

In a nutshell. Feature rich phone, but unless your Stephen Hawking, you'll never use half of the features. Shocking build quality for a flagship phone at this price, horrendous Symbian software, utterly useless battery. Yet another Nokia product that promises sooooooo much, but delivers none of it!

The one and only good thing about this phone is the camera, it is brilliant. Takes fantastic photos and DVD quality video, but of course, these functions will only speed up the drain on the inadequate battery so your phone will die even quicker!

So mines in the bin, and it's back to a trusty, well built, simple to use Sony Ericsson for me.

In response to the previous post, My N95 is still going strong, and much better having switched from O2 to T-Mobile. Battery life for me is not an issue, and can be left on standby for several days before needing a dose of gogo juice. Mine is mainly used for data, as a modem to access the web on my laptop when out and about which when in 3G coverage gives a connection speed comparable to home broadband. As a result of getting the N95, I have replaced four devices with one. My Phone, PDA, Digital Camera and satnav system.

The reason for the improved battery life on mine, is playing around with the settings for WiFi. By default the phone transmits at 100mw, which is stupidly excessive. A quick change to 10mw which is much better, and battery life increases dramatically.

In response to the post previous to the last: I'll give you 20 quid for it :D Everyone's a winner!

In answer to the poster's original question; S60 Phones

Shame. Like I said, it's in the bin. Believe me though, you wouldn't have like a winner if you had bought it!

But apart from that it's a goood phone!:D

Where do you access those tech settings for WiFi Manny? Can't seem to spot them...

Cheers,

it's Menu - Tools - Settings - Connection - WLAN - Options - Advanced Settings (you will get a message saying it's not recommended, click Yes anyway) - then it's under TX Power Level.

HTH

Ahh right - yep, got as far as WLAN, but thought there wasn't anything else in there :)

Cheers,

Steve

Tried out that contacts download App Tony, to try and get the N95 working properly with my Alpine.

Phone just sits there on 'Processing', then phone screen goes to standby, then 'Processing' bar flashes up - repeat ad infinitum! Or at least the 10 minutes that I gave it :)

Back to the drawing board for me on that one

Exactly when does the 8gb version come out on other networks? I'm going to hazard a guess that all networks will put all their own software on like Vodafone and Orange do?

And, I see it has Wi-Fi, does that mean I can browse the web on the phone via my netgear router?

Yep, I can browse with my N95 on the apple airport router as well as the Sky Netgear router.

wow youve certainly had a bad one then, i coudlnt disagree more with that whole statement. build quality? imoa much better than my friends sonys. ive dropped it, bashed it about and sat on it and its still not broken. the buttons are solid, the screen is unscratched so i cant really fault it. battery life? im using most of its features day in day out, im on the internet alot, using the camera, texting, calls all day and it lasts over 24 hours. which is enough. lets face it most of us put the phone on charge over night anyway! i normally get 48 hours out of mine if im not constantly on it. and it charges from flat to max in 3 hours, so its rarely a issue.

whats up with the software? i find it easier to use than and pc! its not as fast to respond as other phones but its never been "slow" for me. ive got a 2 gig card in it which ive filled with pics and music twice and its never let me down yet.

everyones different and has different needs, it sounds like the sony suits you better, but i'd never chuck it in the bin! it wouldnt fit, mines filled with old sonys anyway

I believe it's in the New Year. Not quite sure how this Vodafone exclusive thing has come about

I can't speak for T-Mobile as I've never used their network, but my O2 one is generally free from operator customisations.

WiFi - yep, just find the network and enter an encryption key if relevant, and away you go

I can't really relate to any of this, I've had my N95 since April and it's been more or less faultless since then. Yes the battery life isn't brilliant but all of the features the phone offers are naturally going to cane the battery life. Sure, fit a bigger battery but the phone will then be pretty cumbersome.

Other than this I can't fault it. I know of a few people that have said their SE phones were crap and they've since defected to the N95 camp.

Which department of Sony Ericcson do you work for?? :P;)

i've had an N95 for a little while now and its by far the best phone i have ever had, best screen, best camera, fast internet and the GPS navigation is awesome. i recently went on holiday to spain and it worked faultlessly :D

either you had a bad one or you were trying to operate it with your *** mate :D

Ive had my 95 a while now, and ive previously had other symbian phones, yes they have some little niggles, but on the whole I like them.

My question is what is the latest version of the firmware, I have just used the nokia software updater and it has installed version 11.00.26 (or something simialr).

Also is it possible/worth removing all of the vodafone carp on there?

the latest is 12.0.0.13

It is possible to un-brand it... i did it with mine, i posted the guide on how to do it on here.. flick a couple of pages back in the tech shed

whats the point in un-branding the phone? do you actually gain anything?

well firstly it means you can upgrade the f/w as soon as its released instead of waiting weeks for the networks to approve and sort their own version. (as said above, voda havent released the s12 firmware)

also means you dont get the shite that networks put on taking up memory, or the networks crippling features like T-mobile and Orange who cripple the voip features on the phone.

The one and only good thing about this phone is the camera, it is brilliant.

lmfao no it isn't. You must have pretty low standards for photos. It's not a patch even on my Ixus 50. It is absolutely incomparable!

I have this phone, mainly to use as a phone and to use on my wifi to go on the net and msn when I'm not at my pc. It does this fine. It's a nice phone and I like it. I know Col has explored many more of the features and seems to have sucess with them. His N95 navigated us to, around and back from Prague. Can't complain

But can you ring your mam on your Ixus 50

How can you compare a phone camera to a real camera....the camera will always win because it's a camera

:iagree:

because im not a phototaking person, its ideal for me to take the '95 with me to take pics with this before i can justify spending on a proper camera. the '95 is by no means perfect as a camera but its reasonable, and great for someone who aint gonna carry a camera around everywhere

My thought s exactly
