Was this after the reset technique...?

If so:thumbup: but as a word of caution, I got a reading (downhill in 4th) of 92mpg:eek: shortly after a reset. Does show how much impact short/regular journeys have though.

The "reset" trick works because the mpg is based on the last 50 miles of driving, so if you wipe this out the calculation is based on much smaller data and will therefore likely to be more subject to extreme fluctuations.

As an experiment drive to a motorway/dual carriageway, set the cruise at 70mph and then reset the mpg, you'll find you can get a lot better figure because you haven't included the amount of fuel taken to get you to 70mph so all you're measuring is the feathering of the throttle to keep the car at 70.

Good point,that makes sense.

I still feel that someone like me, making very frequent short journeys, struggles to achieve as impressive returns on a motorway as a regular long journey driver.

Is this in someway connected to the trip computer being 'conditioned' to my driver habits?

I've also been advised that, if driving in too higher gear at low speeds ie 5th at 30mph, this can have a detrimental effect on mpg? Don't know answers to either question but would like to hear views...

Think of it like this - if you have your foot over 1/2 way down to the floor and you aren't accelerating, you're in far too low a gear and are burning excessive fuel just to maintain one speed... drop a cog, your throttle position will be higher and the engine will have to do less work to maintain the speed...

People do say that if you're going uphill, anything below 1500RPM in 5th/6th is too low and you should be in the gear below.

I've found it to be pretty much smack on... I burn less fuel coming home if I stay in 4th up steep, windy hills and 5th on the steep, straight hills, using 6th for the flat, 50-60mph bits, than if I use 5th the whole time, or 5th up all hills and 6th on flats.

Just because a diesel engine can stay in top, or next-from-top gear, and maintain a constant speed, doesn't mean that it should be used in that way for economy...

(As an aside, the most efficient gear for 30mph, so long as you're not going up a relatively steep hill, is 4th, though you have to be very careful that you don't creep past 30 (people do think 3rd for 30 to limit your speed))..

Hope I made at least some sense... :D

I found 3rd to be a much more flexible gear than 4th for 30mph in the Fabia but then if I was driving with economy as my main priority I might sacrifice that.

If you want a better representation of current driving, you can flick to the instantaneous mpg readout and you'll notice how economy varies as you apply pressure to the accelerator pedal. Interestingly, after a bit of experimentation, I've found that you get much better economy if you get briskly up to target speed and then ease off rather than getting there slowly. I've also discovered that going 30+mph past target speed and lifting off and letting the car slow down gives even bigger gains (eg NSL into a 30mph zone). I can only guess that this is because the car uses negligible fuel with no throttle input and so given a long enough run, this outweighs the fuel needed to get up to speed.

Doing lots of little journeys may well have other implications and the engine may be more prone to sooting if it never gets to operate at optimum temperature.

A journey from Hereford to Sheffield on motorways and A roads returned an indicated 55.6MPG (worked out to 53.9 actual) - again, not bad considering 1hr of the journey consisted of creeping at 10-15mph on the M5...

Hi there travelled down to see my sister this weekend in london got there and back on a full tank 510 miles in all, the av mpg was 52.4 and that was at an average speed of 59 mph over the journey, the car was a joy to drive apart from the odd buzz from the interior plastics and the newly fitted leon splitter is still on !:)

I've done 51k miles over 2 years from new and my 2006 Euro 4 Vrs has done an average of 48.5 mpg (measured by calculator and litres to fill) The trip computer is wildly optimistic by as much as 10mpg - I wish it really did do 58mpg..... Most of my mileage is on mixed road journeys of over 50 miles. I'm about to try Millers Sport 4 to see if it makes a difference...

Last tankful; relatively careful driving..

Miles covered: 585.2

Indicated MPG: 56.2

Actual MPG: 53.83

(For interests sake, cost per mile in fuel alone = 11.2 pence)

I regularly see 70mpg+ on the readout (don't know how this translates to actual) on the daily grind from Edinburgh to Glasgow.

I just stick it in 6th and leave it there, trundling along at about 65mph.

I always have the instantaneous display up and try to keep this above 100mpg. This is hard to do so it tends to average out. The best I've ever seen is 190(!!) instantaneous (this is actually really hard to do before the readout blanks as the computer thinks you're coasting) and 81mpg trip average.

I've also had the instantaneous display down to 9mpg, but that's for another thread...

I'm fairly certain that I've had mine up to 199 before it blanks out...:)

:D Somewhere between 200 and 240 is my best on the instantaneous (when I've been watching, at least) - going slightly downhill and just feathering the throttle to maintain my speed

Just another average, dull trundle home...

Here is my wee trundle home tonight covering say 5 miles only filled the car up a couple of days ago, got to admit it was downhill most of the way, either tesco city diesel is good as mpg has improved or I'm driving like a old fart for me as I have never seen this coming home through the town!!

Another trip back from Edinburgh to Glasgow. It was somewhat tedious achieving this, but at least it's good to know it's possible. Sat behind a truck carrying an ISO container doing low fifties all the way...

My trip2 is 62.4 at the mo, most journeys leave trip1 at 60-70mpg. still only getting about 50mpg in reality though, my computer seems less accurate than usual...

My PB set last week is 92.1mpg, i'll put a pic up once i've worked out how.

Putting £66 of fuel in can lead to temporary bouts of restrained driving:)

totaly standard 06 BLT 22k on it is getting me 65mpg on a 90 mile drive that only 20 miles is on motorway rest desent A class roads then 15 miles of pure rubbish slow bend poor surfaced B roads if i take a 5 mile longer route threw a major town avoiding the 15 miles of bad eco driving i have at best on trip computer had it tell me 71.9mpg inc 1.5 mile at end of speed bumps every 100 metres but DAMN It was hard work if i drive more "normal" I only seeing 50-55mpg

my big mpg was acheived by not hogging 6th on roads where i needed to slow to 50 with traffic and changing gear just before 2000 rpm best tank so far was only 612 miles between refils and damn it took the lot when i did stupidly low

I just have dull trundle homes and I can't get anywhere 55+, driving like a granny.

Is it the display etc at fault as it's good driving, say 50mph most of the way for 50 miles?

IMHO its down to driving if i got to 50 and fired it into 6th id go far less mpg on the display constant one than if i were in 5th using a lot less pressure on the throttle to keep me going at that but if you reset the trip 1 computer when you next fill your car to the top and then check it just as you fill it the next time right to top again you can just see how many litres you have used and work it out off the number of miles you have done I think litres to gallon is X4.54 ish then divide that by the number of miles you covered since you filled up normaly i do this every time and the computer is never more than 0.2 of a mpg off

ps in my vrs driving at about 60 or just under in 6th gets me better mpg than at 50 in any gear

cant believe some of the mpg figures im seeing here, over the last 2500 miles mines showing an average of 45-46mpg, ive only owned it for the last 1000 but even nursed i only average 50-52mpg on the way to the g/fs which is 14 miles away, about 8 town and A road, 6 motorway, i dont do 50mph on the motorway though lol, but i dont do 80+ either

At 70 on the motorway without cruise on it'll do 60mpg all day. Round town driven steady it'll do between 45 and 55 dependent on traffic flow. Smooth flowing A roads it'll go to around 65mpg.

Regards Chris

I can't seem to get more than 38mpg stop-start driving around Cardiff.

Brecon to Cardiff which is a 40 mile downhill journey I can have it nudging 52mpg by the time I arrive.
