BMW 123D vs Octy 2.0TDi DSG....Comparison

Not at all a good deal is a good deal, i.e. crate of 24 stella for £8.99 is a good deal no matter if you are a millionaire or living on the streets.

A good deal to me is one I can take advantage of. £8.99 for Stella is not a good deal to me because I can't be drinking that pi$$ ;)

But if you're on a detox cure it's a pretty bad deal, you could just as well shove your money down the drain directly...

A deal is good or bad depending on circumstances. Change one of them and the result will change, too.

For me, a car deal that had me handing out £600 per month (plus petrol, tax, insurance cost ) would be a pretty bad deal indeed. I may be able to afford it but I would also have to give up a lot of things (sell my summer cottage, for instance). The pleasure of a new 123 won't really be worth it. But then I'm not really the Beemer type  - can't even understand how people can spend their money on cosmetics such as alloy wheels :sofahide:

We sometimes like (or love) cars for the most absurd reasons. If the owner's happy, then everything is well, innit? And Lady E seems happy enough?

I disagree...

I f**king hate Stella!

Yes, she can pull better in her new car than in a Landrover defender

£600pcm incl insurance/maintence/ved/servicing/tyres.

Remember that new the vRS cost £13k and the equivalent PCP on that would be £324pcm

A Citroen C1 = £247pcm

Octavia vRS TDI = £406pcmLeon Cupra R 240bhp = £453pcm

330d M = £650pcm

OK, missed the bottom line - but still, the loan repayment only is £550 pcm... my Felicia comes cheaper ;)

and comparing the Beemer and the Furby in your examples (£270 pcm)... well, even if there's a difference in performance the difference in cost would take a bit of the joy out - for me, thats it.

I agree when it comes down to £270 extra pcm for a hatchback which is a bit bigger rwd more desirable and a touch faster then it gets difficult to agree it that much better.

The 118d M Sport = £457pcm

Ibiza Cupra PD = £368pcm

Leon FR TDI = £403

Mini Cooper D = £316

Fiat Grande Punto Sporting 1.9= £307

Fiat Grande Punto 5 door 1.3 TDI = £262

I think your PCP figures are going to be wildly different to what Amanda is paying as she had her Octy to trade in against the BMW so will of been able to put down a full deposit (usually the max is 35%) that will make a massive difference to the monthly pcp figure. I'm paying no where near those amounts per month for mine :D

Ah yes my figs are based upon 0% deposit.

Got a question for you regarding a PCP offer I have received on a BMW 123d M Sport since my last post.

The 123d M sport has no options.

List price = £25,695 - but they offer it to me for £23,218

Deposit is £0

Early termination fee = 695

Offer to purchase fee = £89.25

Arrangement fee = £1250

Total Loan = £25,252.25

Total interest @8.14% (APR = 8.3%) £4,429.79

Loan + Interest = £29,682.24

Residual Value = £9985.5

Loan Repayment = £547.13pcm

Maintence Contract = £46.86pcm

Total = £593.99

Also note that insurance & VED & Ins excess & 6 Valets a year are included

This is based upon a 36month contract @12k a year.

Well to be honest I don’t know if I want to put all my personal dealing in a thread, but your deal does sound expensive to me. Thanks to the genius of APRs, I can’t even begin to tell you what kind of a deal you have when looking at these stupid things. My cars list was just under £30K (a stupid amount for a small 2 +2 admittedly) I then haggled based on a price I had in mind and a loan I was guaranteed from the bank. We didn’t come to an agreement straight away and ended up working out a deal using the mechanics of the PCP.

We agreed in principle to a discount of £5,300 to start with and then he tried to beat the banks rate which he couldn’t do. He then inflated the APR of the PCP to be able to further discount the car due to subsidies he would collect. I put in a small deposit from the Octy (Equity in the vehicle which had loan outstanding on it) and put a little cash into the deal (although absolutely nowhere near to the 35% maximum that has been mentioned as a limit) Also he threw in £1,000 which was a signing on bonus that came from BMW finance (not the Dealer) for taking the PCP out with them.

I pay my own business insurance and decided not to take out the maintenance contract as they weren’t doing any decent deals at the time and it will work out cheaper for me to pay for the services as they come up anyway.

My PCP is based on 18K miles per annum and I am paying over £200 a month less than your quote Welshy (my GFV is around £1,000 more than your quote). In the next few months I will look to buying out the PCP with a cheap bank loan having already taken advantage of the free £1,000 PCP bonus that came from BMW.

Oh and because I got that grand thrown in, I can’t tell you how it would make the APR figure look if I wanted an equivalent rate to my then adjusted figures (ie my deposit went up a grand).

See, the genius of APRs is I can’t compare my loan with yours based on the APR figure as the 2 loans we have/might get, are for a different amount so the comparison can not be made. I could if we had use Flat rates, but so many people think APRs are the way to go so it would seem.

Has she put me on iggy??? Just checking to see if she knows if its a good deal or not?

PCP's your paying for the interest on the GFV it is certainly the most expensive way to buy a car as after the term you still dont own the car you may have a little equity in the car but thats forcing you to buy another when noone needs to change cars unless they are unreliable/accident damaged or a change of circumstances i.e. kids/small garage etc.

As mentioned I think it is a weak deal, but BMW are not doing the dicounts this year that they were doing when I got my deal.

As for the PCP being the most expensive way to buy a car, hopefully you can see why this is incorrect in this case (and many other PCPs) due to the fact there is often a manufacture incentive to take these deals out. This often negates the higher interest paid and make them cheaper than equivalent HP/Loan deal. Plus a PCP helps defend against negative equity (as happened on my Toledo) and I have the rule of ‘Halves and Thirds’ included in my PCP as it is based on an HP style agreement.

Yes, she can pull better in her new car than in a Landrover defender

Still think I would look great in a Landie with a winch and a snorkel. :P

Noooooo,

Skinny Geordie lesbians don't do it for me.

However, slender, attractive ( although knocking on a bit ) Northern Ladies might just float my ( small ) boat:D

Why are people obsessed with your finances?

If you can afford it, buy it girl:thumbup:

Picks herself up of floor………. Was that a back handed compliment?!!!!:)

Not sure about my own finances myself. Sometimes they seem buoyant and other times I might have to go working the streets (perhaps a Landie would give me more ‘opportunities’ )

When I first became self employed I only earned around £8K in my first year and the bl00dy government decided I should pay nearly 40% of that back to them (PAYE/NIC/Employers NIC….I run as a Limited Co) I nearly went under.

Hope you will understand when I go across to the Dark side Mr G (I was snowed in yesterday up at me mams and a Landie would have enabled me to get back yesterday and Welshy wouldn’t have thought I was ignoring him) although a 4 x 4 is still a little way off I think.:D

I still don't see how a flat rate makes it any easier to compare when you've "sliced and diced" the deal so much. You get a number, against what you can compare it with, I don't know. You're left to total up you payments and comparing final figures which was the advice given by everyone at the start

For anyone else who's interested here's a balloon payment calculator: Balloon Payment Mortgage Loan Calculator for Excel . And I'd also recommend the RATE and PMT functions in Excel as useful for loans and mortgages.

Welshy mentioned APRs again and although I know what the printed APR is on my paperwork, it cannot be used to compare to the deal Welshy has been offered. If he wanted to talk interest Rates they are of no use. However I agree that bottom line is what counts (as I too have repeatedly said), at least in my case, as I had quite a complicated deal done in order to get to the figures I wanted. Hats off to the BMW Finance chap as he was up for the challenge and certainly knew what he was doing. Even clarified what the subsides were after I told I was just checking them using the small numbers on the top of his screen.

I quite like the new Freelander, and the Octavia Scout I had on loan impressed me.

However I am skint and have been told NO FRIPPERIES this year....

I will forgive you being a lesbian Amanda, if I can have first dibs on the pictures ( you can do your own sound on the video:rofl:)

An APR is a far more meaningful figure as it gives you figure to compare to other sources of finance regulated by the FSA. "Flat Rates" are tools for shiney-suited salesmen to trick unsuspecting punters into finance deals that cost more than appear.

Oh and you did mention the above when we were discussing Finance:P:D

Firstly a man of your advancing years shouldn’t be dallying with fripperies as they will put your back out.

And liking proper Landies does not make me or Ms Jolie women who wear ‘comfortable’ shoes.

Freelanders are Gay however. Hth

Commutable shoes???

If Freelanders are gay, well, I'll try 'owt once:eek:

Once you've done all your tricks and come out with the final figure for your loan - the APR lets you compared against other sources of finance providing the other terms were the same - hence its more meaningful. Whether you could get the same deal without the PCP element is a different topic - Ask Welshy he doesn't like PCPs. In your case, it isn't easily comparable to a vanilla bank loan whatever way you wish to calculate a rate.

I don't mind hijacking a thread when it gets so boring that even Welshy sounds interesting, ( even though he is on my ignore list ).

Lets talk about butch 3 series drivers instead.

I must admit, all of the male 3 series drivers I have seen look gay.

Can I borrow your car to see if I can pull?

You can borrow mine to pick up your Albanian car-wash wallah, I'm sure he will be impressed:rofl:

Yes, but as I have said, when do you ever get the chance to see APRs for exactly the same Amounts and Terms? Almost never, hence APRs are poo. In a ‘Fantasy FSA World’ they are OK, but here in the real world with incentives and different discounts available at different Dealers they are carp and I wish Dealers/Salesmen would stop quoting them as they are less than useless. But i don't have a problem with rates, I just ignore anyone who mentions APRs and look at bottom lines. if, however I am told I can get a Flat rate of 'X' from say my Bank, i can go round dealers and if they tell me I need a certain amount to buy their car, i can apply an easy bit of mental arithmetic and work out if my Bank loan is cheaper than the one on offer from that specific dealer, regardless of the term or amount

I am not sure if the above sounds like a euphemism???????:D
