BMW 123D vs Octy 2.0TDi DSG....Comparison

Come on hands up those of you who doubted me.

12_6_14.gif

If only it were the best car in the world (VFM of otherwise) it’s really a posh Fabia with rear wheel drive and less rear room. Incredibly efficient service though. A friend of mine has bought me a tow bar and electrics for Christmas (he got them cheap as he owns a Coach company) and the Parts Manager said ‘’blimey, she’s order a load of stuff on this one’’ as apparently when he put my chassis number in to his PC it churned out my entire spec and told him if he need to sell a different Goose neck or if the car needed extra cooling fans (the 120D does apparently). I’m just using it for mounting Bikes though.

I take it you are being ironic Welshy, or did you read my first post?:D

One thing which does put it into perspective for the discount price paid you could have bought a 30k 330d M sport 231bhp...

Also the 130i M sports are starting about £15k these days which are much faster than the 123d and the price differnece will not be made up by more frugal power source and also the 123d new will depreciate more than a 30k £15k 130i M sport would.

Wish I had any of them.

SO what you are saying is I didn’t buy the best VFM car in the world????

My Prophet has deserted me already and I so wanted to become a minor Deity.:(

Oh and I bought a new car with a high spec, so that ruled out a used/low spec 330D, plus I couldn't afford to run one.:(

No issue... Just fit him with a DPF ;)

I should have multi quoted those previous posts but I seem to be a bit……er……thick headed this afternoon :D Anyhoo, I have never said it’s the best car etc, but rather I thought I would share my enthusiasm for not only my new purchase, but also a car that has an engine that has set a new bench mark for small diesels. VAG are already about to produce their own 200+bhp Diesel in the TT next Spring so I am sure this will start up a few discussions on here. I figured that most people on here were petrol/Derv heads and would like to know a little about another enthusiast car, even one less blessed with looks than an Octy. I actually think the looks have grown on me and thing that Pogle is quite good looking really.

Yes VAG will shortly have their own twin turbo 2.0 TDI.

GM already have one in their 1.9 CDTI 184bhp.

What this is basically doing is removing the need for the 2.5ltr or pushing up the 2.5 to 3.0ltr power and overall reducing average car emmissions.

SO what you are saying is I didn’t buy the best VFM car in the world????

Not sure how you work that one out there are plenty of hig spec ones around on Trader plus it doesnt really need to have everything you have opted for sdo you compromise.

The 330d 1year - 18 months old will cerainly be a cheaper car total car ownership costs over 36 months than the 123d (mainly due to the depreciation & the fact the MPG is mid to high 40' in the 330d & from all the press reports the actual MPG of the 330d is easy to get to the claimed numbers.

Anyway I really like the look of the 1 series (a marmite car I guess but for me its great.)

I actually think the looks have grown on me and thing that Pogle is quite good looking really.

Which confirms the truth of the old saying "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" ;)

I spec’d the car as I wanted the extras!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you think I don’t know my own mind???????????????????????

If I wanted a second hand car, I would have bought a second hand car. I do not like M Technic suspension as I have posted earlier, and I could not have gotton £1K off the finance which I had already knocked down to match a low Bank Rate (BMW incentive) I do not believe either that a less sophisticated design that weighs about the same as a 123D and produces more power can magic superior MPG, unless it has a Drag Co-ef of bugger all minus a bit. I bought the car as it fitted my needs (just, but I now am getting a tow bar so space isn’t an issue) and spec, so therefore the 330D was exactly NOT the car I wanted and would have been terrible VFM.

Oh and as my car will only need 1 service in it’s first year and the 330D may or may not need 2, plus I have new tyres, oh and a years tax, and a 3 year warranty and well this could go on for ever.

Whisky Tango Foxtrot...

Fabia, I take resentment at that as it is actually golf sized.

Besides there is no way in hell it would ever keep up with a 2.0 fabia even in the 135i M1 guise

It’s not as big inside as a MK V Golf by a long way. :(

As for keeping up with a Fabia, I would need a Impreza/Evo to keep up with one obviously.:D

So you haven't read the first post of the thread with the specs, have you? No Beer holder there (probably the only thing overlooked).

Or, since Willberpog comes from Bavaria, it's part of the standard equipment?

Well youd have 18-24months warrenty with the 330d which you could extend if you so wished.

I just said the 330d M as thats my pref clearly you could go for the 330d SE and there are those around with all the option ticked incl the individual range!!!

Drag Coefficient well the 1 series has 0.29 which is the same as the 3 series - depending if its a saloon/touring/coupe of course. So no difference on this front. its a bigger engine which will drive for longer in a higher gear lower revs = lower mpg given the same speeds are driven (within reason).

Wasnt too keen on the agressive tone of the response:rolleyes: Never mind the point is you want the fastest diesel around to run for 3 years which will cost you the least amount of money. Ive just thrown a left-field option into the ring and it seems to have raised further questions.

Anyway enjoy the car its a great engine & as I keep saying I like the 1 series shape (marmite looks) & looks.

What car do you drive Welshy?? you always seem to do this sort of thing when people talk about their cars and I am sorry, but I can't remember what you drive. I'm sure you will have been asked before.

Optimum fuel economy is not solely dependant on the tallness of the gear ratio. Plus the 123 has a newer higher pressure injection system than the old 330D so it should be more efficient (whether it is more efficient than the old VAG PDs i don't know as they were the worlds most thermally efficient engines for several years-I am talking purely about the efficiency of the combustion). Plus I have Stop Start, Regen braking, elctro steering, Air con compressor decoupling etc

I wasn't trying to set a record with economy, I just liked the car and chose NOT to buy a second hand car, BMW or otherwise.

.

Wish I had bought another Skoda now:(

You need a man in lederhosen to go with the Bavarian lass in her lovely dirndl.

I can confirm you can't fit a beer stein in an Octy II cup holder although my slightly inebriated passenger did keep trying

Why? Im taking that you have gone on a PCP deal - if so the GFV of the 330d will be higher than that of the 123d so your "funding" less depreciation evein including the added warrenty. Then again just change the car in 18-24 months to avoid that cost. Ergo 330d SE/M sport is cheaper.

Well looking at the many reports of people not being able to achieve the makers claimed MPG by some margin does make you wonder especially when the 330D achieved its mid 40's without any problem & when certainly not hanging about.

Stop start is only a good thing if you frequently drive in congestion if you dont it will not be used. Remember it was VW who invented the stop start with its USA Rabbit in the mid 80's and Citroen have been using it for many years in the 90's and 00's, and here are issues with them - no idea if BMW have overcome these issues but form the bkw forums build quality has decreased

Whats odd here is that the advice from any car buying magazine is never buy new unless you intend to run it into the ground if not then buy a nearly new car - a term which in the Uk means up to 12 months & up to 30k. That way you dont lose the 17.5% the second you drive the car off the car lot and your starting at a lower base so less real cash to lose.

Welshy, I not only know my own mind, but I was a car saleswoman for a couple of years so I think I understand PCPs pretty well (I sold over 80% of my dealerships PCPs for several months running) and I can tell you in the real world, PCPs rarely work out better for the used buyer. In my case, I got £1,000!! Get it £1,000! contribution to my PCP (these are NEVER available for used cars unless it is a hidden cost to the customer, or a massively overage car), not including the discounted rate I got on the finance. I know how to read the coded figures that are displayed on the Dealers finance computers and know when I get a great deal. I got a great deal!

You don’t say what car you drive, but obviously live in a dream world of fantasy cars that you have read about in car magazines and I suspect your 330D pages are stuck together by now. The things that you write seem to me to be regurgitated car facts that you have read from spurious magazines and if you wish to compare facts, figures and retentive knowledge on this matter I think you might find I am a more than worthy opponent.

What car do you drive???

I wrote this post, as said before, because I wanted to share my experiences so far, as well as show off a little bit at having a new toy. I expected the usual detractors to have a dig, but why do you have to immediately say nice car, but you could have done so much better? I doubt you could match my skills at haggling when buying either a new car or used. So I reckon I got a top deal, a car I actually wanted (not fantasised about) and do not want to be told………….’ah yes, but this one is better….’ That’s cobblers! Put your money where your mouth is and show us your car, preferably several shots with you in it so we can authenticate it is yours (I have pictures of me in Vipers and 911 Turbos, oh and Astons and Ferraris etc) Then we can all say, nice car, but why did you buy it and not this…..(holds up imaginary picture of Estelle)

As for the other detractors, I will wait with anticipation to see what their next car purchases are so I can share my collective car wisdom on their purchase:D

...and I suspect your 330D pages are stuck together by now.

Not kind...

but funny :rofl::rofl::rofl:
