BMW 123D vs Octy 2.0TDi DSG....Comparison

Featured Replies

Interestingly enough I have just spent nearly 2 hours (again!) in Manchester’s finest traffic jams

 I thought it was pretty good tonight - Birchwood to City Centre in under half an hour. I had to hang round for 10 mins to avoid a parking ticket beofre free parking at 6.:D

Think I am a bit scared to go back there. Funnily enough I recently popped back into the car to visit the local Offie and even though the car has stood for 4 hours in sub zero temperatures it was putting out warm air within 10 secs?? very odd. I'm not sure how they do that, especially as it's an all alloy engine. Must be something to do with flaps that cover the radiator grill when cold. I am also not sure if I read somewhere that the water pump doesn't run continuously from start up.

Oh sure :D

For the other, engine probably cocooned with some sort of jacket to retain heat.

The BMW diesels have a pre-heater system which functions until the engine is up to temperature.

See that is where part of your extra money goes ;)

I haven’t got that far through the destruction book yet 200+ pages in all, but I thought the preheater was something that was driver assigned and I didn’t think I had assigned it. It does have a nice residual heat button that stuffs warm air into the cabin for up to 15 minutes with the engine off, but this uses latent engine heat. It all but renders the heated seats a waste of money really.

From what I can tell there is an ECU controlled electrical heater element somewhere in the air flow ducting.

All little touches but it means you have warmed up before you get home.

Thank God it’s got a warranty is that I can say.

Loads of old diesels used to have these things. Mine had it placed so that it in the air ducting.

That worked for the life of the car without any issues whatsoever, although I'll admit it wasn't ECU controlled just a connection for power and another to a relay I guess working on a temp sensor somewhere.

When I look at all the systems and the options I added, I think I might use the warrant before the car goes. My first car only got reclining front seats because a friend of mine knew where there was a pair in a scrap yard. They were a different colour to the interior too!

Years ago the German TUV (AA equivalent) rated the BMW 7 Series as the most unreliable car - virtually because of the proliferation of electronic devices.

Luckily, these have become so much more reliable.

I thought my Octy had a fair few electrical systems, but Villberpog knocks that into a cocked hat. Every system that can be controlled by the ‘idrive’ or assignable buttons, can be controlled by voice. If I wanted to ring my mother I just say ‘’Call name’’ then in response to it’s affirmation I say ‘’mother’’ and it almost flawlessly works out who that is out of several hundred names in my phone book. I haven’t had to teach it any names and it does this while I’m banging down the motorway at 85 mph!!! Very clever for an entry level Beemer (although I suspect the hardware and software pinch a lot of the technology and algorithms of its bigger siblings).

Guess you and the Car Wash guy found some compatibility after all - though he smokes :D

Erm, are you supposed to quote / mention illegal speeds.

The TUV said that there were so many 'appliances' (my words) on the 7-Series that if they achieved 99% reliabilty then the car would break down every 5 minutes ( my words again - but you get the gist).

Re warranty - who cares if you get 'out of it' soon enough and are onto your next motor.

My GPS device says my speedo over reads by exactly 15mph. strange coincidence that.:P

Congratulations, Lady E, you've reached divinity! What you say is not just an opinion, it's the Eternal Truth :bowdown1:

And not only are you Divine - seems as if you got a Prophet, too

(Pls. don't get me wrong here, dear Lady - I happily grant you all the joys you experience in the company of Pogle  )

One thing which does put it into perspective for the discount price paid you could have bought a 30k 330d M sport 231bhp...

Also the 130i M sports are starting about £15k these days which are much faster than the 123d and the price differnece will not be made up by more frugal power source and also the 123d new will depreciate more than a 30k £15k 130i M sport would.

Wish I had any of them.

No issue... Just fit him with a DPF ;)

Yawn, where's that can o' worms picture?

Value for whom's money?

Gotta agree, if I was looking at VFM motoring, I'm not sure a £25k car that only did 40mpg would be top of my list
