Peugeot 306

Featured Replies

I am looking at a Peugeot 306 HDI for a friend of mine (link HERE

and it seems to be a good car, I have had a look at it as it is in very good nick and runs well. I am assuming that the price reflects the high miles and colour of the vehicle?

What are peoples opinion of this car do the engines last, quality issues? What should I be aware of with a car of so many mile should this be an issue or not??

Cheers

Car before last was a 306. Had no probs at all in 2 years - except I found that it didn't handle too well on black ice :(

Dealer customer service was very poor as well but that's nothing to do with the car itself.

Was it a Diesel Jane?

No 'fraid not. 1.8 petrol.

What does your friend want from the car ?

Will they be doing high miles ? - Not this car, half its engine life is already used.

A bit of load capacity, avge 10k miles p.a, good fuel economy ? - Not a bad choice, could do worse.

Wat was the trim fit rattle like ?

For servicing and repairs would suggest that the find a specialist garage .( 1 of my previous car was a Citoren BX) - i used a specialist Citroen garage for services, he did Pugs as well, servicing costs were cheaper, and he used genuine citroen parts.

Good luck.

Think as with any diesel engine it will last for a considerable mileage, and that if the condition of the rest of the vehicle is up to scratch it's not a bad a price for it.

Unfortunately, the only person I know who had a diesel 306 drove like a t1t and managed to f*** it driving it through a deep puddle...which struck me as strange, what with it being a diesel, but then I don't know just how deep it was!

Rob.

The Hdi engine is excellent. My experiences with peugeot have generally not been good however.

See what honest john has to say about them and renault in the telegraph motoring section. www.honestjohn.co.uk

Petrols recover from soakings easier than diesels, diesels tend to die spectacularly. My dads mate blew an engine on his LR 90TDI at a RTV (road taxed vehicle trial) drove it through a lake, water into the intake and a loud pop later and he was stranded in 2 foot of water :D

It's french, nuff said.

(the cars, not the people, well Xavier and his family(who I'm sure are very nice people))

Honest John has showed up a lot of potential issues with these cars, but as it has had 1 owner since new it is probably a reasonable car.

The car will be used about 10k miles PA and the trim rattle is very good even the tailgate doesnt rattle

It's french' date=' nuff said.

Yep, shocking. IMHO a lemon law is what Britain and the EU needs. You actually get more protection buying a car from the EU than from your local dealer! America is very strict with dealerships though. You need to have a signed agreement with a manufatcure before the State will give you a licence hense why in the Sates you have 3 or such marks on the one site.

OK I think of high mileage diesel's like this.

The engine will have done say 120,000 miles which is good for a diesel and there are plenty of more miles to be had out of it, but you also must remember things like wheel bearings, suspension etc etc cause they are going to have this high mileage on. What you might save on the good high mileage diesel engine you may loose on other parts of the car as well and you may find other parts of the car starting to show signs of heavy wear.

Just a though really.

Cost a fortune to run I had a 306Dturbo and was gob smacked at the running costs didn;t have it long :D

Tell him to get an early Octavia diesel instead and join the clan.

There is a fantastic pug specialist in Derby I found out last night, the car wouldnt need to be dealer serviced due to the age/mileage, my sisters G/F is a Pug tech so is going with me to look at cars.

Have to say my 306 experience was fine. I had an early 306 XRTD on an M plate. Loved the fuel economy, aprox 550-600 to a tank, never ever dropped below 450 even after a massive caning. Sat quite happily at 100 on the motorway if asked.

Dislikes were typical French build quality, which was squeaks and rattles. Running costs on mine were fine, I did need a radiator which was quite expensive.

On the whole I liked the car, would I buy another one ??? Probably not due to the pricing of the Ford Focus second hand. I still have my Focus, 4 years old now and loved it.

Several of my mates has the early 306 DTurbos and did some very large miles. Seemed good cars to me and none of then seemed to have much in the way of problems. Went well and were quite practical in terms of decent boot space etc.

Yeh the 306 XRDT I had was group 5 insurance. On the other hand, the 1.8 Petrol Zetec Focus I have is only group 6. Compared to bloody 16 for the vRS !
