removing wax

Featured Replies

Im planning if the weather is right to strip the wax off and start from fresh this weekend as the wax now as bits of dirt inpregnated in it so i think its time to remove and start from scratch.

Question is what product do/shall i use to remove the wax? preferbly something i can get out of halfrauds thats quick and easy.

cheers

A heavy degreaser should do the trick.

Edit: Just had a look on Halfrauds website. They do a couple of heavy duty products, not sure how good they are though.

Ideally you want something with tar removal properties as well if you're not intending to clay.

Claying and polishing removes wax but Meguiars do a 3 stage set but if you use the DC1 it effectively removes anything and everything from the paint. It is also luckily available from halfords.

Clay bar works for me.

I use Meguiars Quick Clay kit.

im gonna have my daughter around and need to run dads taxi by the early afternoon so i only have the morning to do it all too.

How much is the maguires dc1? and how do i clay the car?

Think the DC1 is about £8 and is a wipe on/off type product just follow the instructions.

The clay is a kit with quik detailing spray and clay bar which is like putty.

You basically spray the panel and lightly rub the bar over the lubricated paintwork. Before starting the claying break the bar into 1/3rds and use a little at a time. Especially good if you drop it on the floor.

I put the bar in warm water to soften which makes it easier.

If the clay drags on the paintwork then use more of the spray.

ta, ill look into it at the weekend!!

Just wash the car in All purpose cleaner.

mixed down at 4:1 that will get the wax removed easyily

Make sure you have plenty of MF's to take the DC1 off. It takes ages to get off by hand IMHO.

so is there actually anything easy to remove the wax with like a ton of autoglym shampoo? as after what cheezemonkey has just said is now making me worried as im gonna be spending quite a while on the car and dont really want to end up with extra time to be spent on it. Can the AG resin remove it?

As mentioned above a non acidic All Purpose Cleaner, diluted to 4:1 should work well and if you missanything then polishing will get these.

Domestic washing up liquid will strip the wax off easily.

go with APC rather than washing up liquid as washing up liquid has salt in it

any APC recommendations?

I use Meg's APC,

Guessing your in oxfordshire so if any of these places are close by worth a shot but worth a call first as most of them probably only stock the standard polishes etc.

couldnt see that in hlafords tonight, will pop into another store tomorrow.

Halfords don't stock it as it's part of the Megs Pro range.

There should be other branded APC but make sure the are non acidic.

ended up getting some kracher stuff today as thats who the jet wash is made by. given it a quick covering and washed it off ready for the morning where i will do it again and start the process.

To be honest with an all purpose cleaner its going to take a few washes to take the wax off, once its on its not meant to come off as its made for protecting paintwork against almost anything. I'd deffinately recommend poorboys clay, its easy to use and shouldn't take more than a morning if you start before 11! Also, you'll only have to do it once to get all the wax off. But make sure you give it a quick polish afterwards as you're down to the paint and if you're not planning on starting again the same day you'll need some protection thats easy to remove when you come to clean it. I use only Poorboys products really as they're great and have never needed to try anything else. If you'd like me to put you in touch with my supplier just let me know.

If you really really dont want to use clay, I'd suggest giving poorboys bug and tar remover a go. Its a good product though i've never used it for this purpose so don't know if it will work.
