Mazda MX5 or MGtf

Featured Replies

I have always fancied one of the former, but have been offered one of the latter for a very good price.

Pros and cons of both please.

Imvho, there's a reason why the MGTF is a very good price ;) I'd say go and look at both so I don't prejudice you though....

Chris

Mazda MX5 looks better, built better, handles better, they still have a dealer network, they still have parts being made, they are not built by MG Rover, they are generally a good car - for a lady.

MG - IMHO - dog****

Hope that helps you make a decision :)

I'd go for the MX5.

The main problem with the mgf/tf is parts. MG have restarted production of kits from China, so parts could become avaliable soon, but whether they are fully interchangable is another matter.

both are fun little cars, but given you know you can still get parts for the Mazda easily (maybe not the jap imports) I'd probably go for the Mazda.

Either way you will still look suspect when driving one :gay:

Can i book an appointment now for the hair salon your going to have to open if you buy either..

Before you all start accusing me of being a sausage jockey.........

The plan is for me to sell my vRS, and run the Mad Wifes, and she can have a girly car, to go on the pull with.

The MG in question has just had 2K spent on the engine, to cure the notorious overheating problem, but the suspension is a bit suspect, BUT it is very cheap.

Who cares if you are seen as a laydee or sausage jockey or studmuffin they are fun cars.....they are great:thumbup:

Went for an MX5 based on all the plaudits it has had over the years..best sportscar etc I understand why now

And yes, huge aftermarket thing going on...inc supercharging /turbos etc

MGF...well,as above.Really don't know if it is actuallybad.Just didn't want to risk it and don't actually like them.Prefer old old MG's (and I wanted something that looked more like the old 60's sports cars)

I think the MG is a fairly well balanced motor, with decent handling and a fair punch, but, the unreliability will always be an issue.

I have always fancied an open top jobby, but decent old MG's carry a hefty premium, and as said the MX5 has a massive following, and parts are cheap and they can be decently modded. They are also very reliable, which counts for a lot.

Hey Ho, anyone want to buy my Fabia?

Everything depends on its sale tbh ( and it needs to go to pay the mortgage  )

Agreed

I have had the same 1995 mk1 MX5 for nearly ten years now, using it as a daily driver for 9 of those and it has been utterly reliable. The only cost has been servicing (cheap at £50 or £110 for a short or long service respectively with a specialist), a rear brake caliper and normal consumables (including one roof at £375)... and of course the inevitable modifications.

My friend - who chose the MGF route has had numerous problems including two engine rebuilds due to overheating/head gasket failure! This despite his being an unmodified car.

Having driven the two back to back on many occasions there is no comparison - the MX5 is much more driver focussed and a better handling car all round. The MGF, whilst good is a bit lighter on the controls and more comfortable. The handling is also very sensitive to the correct setting of the ride height. Both have a good following but the MX5 is probably better catered for aftermarket.

So I guess it depends on what you want - personally I would go for the MX5 every time.

I couldn't recommend the MX-5 highly enough, fantastic car.

I have two friends. Oh and they both have MG's (One F one TF) both have had multiple engine failures which required engine rebuilds on both.

Also the cabin of the MG is minute, it's uncomfortable for anyone over 5' tall. I reckon a horse could drive an MX-5, they're so roomy inside.

A Horse....

Feck me, you lead an interesting life Roy.....

An MX5 'twill be then, that is when my Fabia sells.....

I have a million people interested, but they all have less money than me

An excellent choice... have you checked out the Owners Club website for cars for sale yet? If not then do so as you may find that they are better looked after than thos eon the forecourts.

Whilst I find this analysis somewhat blunt - I have to agree, apart from the reference to it being a ladies car, because I owned an MX-5 many years ago.

I hated the attention it brought, but no better car for a spirited drive on a back road - seriously fun!

I would recemmond a MX5 but then I have one! No problems, no rattles, just brilliant fun motoring.

If the MGtF has had the engine work done ie head gasket etc then it might be worth a look.

Open top motoring is huge fun, still miss the Fabia though and that torque. Hope the car is ok?

Hope to meet up soon

MX5 all day every day , i service them and i can say they are pretty reliable little motors , i personally wouldn't have one as the mk1+2 versions are too small for me , but i could live with a mk3 version

OOOh hello Tony, wanna swap?

Hello!

Miss the Fabia hugely, if when I had the ST170 I would have bit your hand off. :)

Love the mx5, if when you get one try and get a hard top with it, makes winter motoring more bearable.

Mine is a mk2.5 sport with leather with lsd (146bhp). Getting around 31mpg at the moment.

the MG's were much better in later flavour when they changed to the conventional suspension... is the one you are looking at the liquid suspension? mid engined 145+bhp rear drive ect ..

however, just on the reliability front, I'd probably go for the mx5 ;)

I dunno what flavour it is...it's red, with half a new engine, it sits very very low () and it's on an 'R' plate.

But at 'about' £1k it may be worth a punt yet.......

Having said that I haven't sold mine yet...

You will look almost as suspect as Jeff himself does when he does his car share with a bloke from his work who has an MGF - avec lexus lights and often driven with the roof down :rofl::rofl:

As much as I respect the MG brand, I couldn't bring myself to buy a TF as they were just too poorly built which is a real shame.

Gay MX5 it is for you then ;)
