Storage/Backup Server

Featured Replies

Well as there has been all of this interest in storage recently especially NAS drives. I looked at all my data this weekend and my rather poor attempt at backup and thought it was time i did something about it.

Servers direct have a HP Proliant ML110 G4 server for £99.97 which has a 1.86Ghz dual core xeon cpu, 512 RAM, 160Gb Sata Drive. The board supports RAID 0, 1, 10.

I could then buy 2 x 500Gb Samsung spinpoint drives and up the RAM to a 1 Gb for little over £100.

Install Ubuntu server and ReStore Welcome to the RESTORE Website. And i would have a nice backup system and file server.

Good idea, or are there better solutions out there?

Well, im installing Windows Home server as we speak... but you dont seem like a windows person do you

Surely a samba share will host media or does WHS do something remarkable? Backups.. answered that already and i am sure you can do secure access aswell!

I have tons of 'old' boxes i could use, but i thought i should probably buy something new rather than relying on dated hardware like i do already :P

WHS is amazing,

Can host your music allowing any UPNP device to play it back,

Automatically backs up any computers at a time you decide,

Gives you a free url with secure logon so that you can access your server and media from anywhere there is a web connection,

and a whole lot more, I have only been using it a week and I am really impressed.

Here i go again.

www.qnap.co.uk.

I should be on comission.

No licensed OS. Redundancy built in. Does it all.

And for the Geeks has Linux in there somewhere
