  1. They sound great, but I know they're not all they're cracked up to be because a lad I know got one when they were first coming out because he just couldn't get an affordable quote anywhere. Then he started finding the drawbacks, one of which being he was getting charged a 'fine' if you like because he was coming home after finishing work late at night. Too long ago to recall all the details, but basically to avoid any 'fines' he had to have his car parked at his house between of like 0800 and 2000. It was deemed risky for him afterhours. Wasn't as if he was doing doughnuts in his 1lt Micra, he was coming home from working in the Tesco after uni.
  2. Yeah I got both the canton and the space saver tyre happily in the boot. There's loads of spares kits knocking about. Should be able to get one fairly cheap
  3. You can, I'd say one policy for the one car. Don't have two running at the same time. Anything happens, you'll open a can of worms if you need to claim on either policy. 2009 and my first car was my nan's old 1995 Fiesta 1.1 3dr. Just over £2400 for a policy on own. It wasn't any cheaper when my dad looked at having the car put in his name on the logbook, him as the primary insured and me named. I'd avoid like the plague anything with a driver monitor / scoring system. The black box doesn't know what's going on. It can score you down for normal driving like accelerating hard up a slip road to get up to speed (our works van ping whenever the revs go above 2k?!?!) and it doesn't know you've just slammed on because a kid has just ran out into the road. It just sees you've decelerated sharply and scores you down. It may be worth just waiting until May (which I understand will go down like a lead balloon) and just add them on as a named driver at the time of renewal. That way, you can do a thorough search on comparison sites and not have to pay any admin fees. Once she's got at least a years no claims under her belt and certainly no points in the first two years, the premium will drop a fair bit. Insurance. One of those necessary evils.
  4. I took my mum to get her Scala serviced a few weeks ago and the salesman saw my mum and I having a look in the new Octavia. He was trying his best to get my mum's car PX'd for a new Scala and then was trying to get my car going 'I know it's 5 and a half years old, but it's a lower mileage and it's got all the bells and whistles'. I have a feeling the poor fella was desperate to get a sale in, so would have been happy to give me any deal I wanted. If it wasn't for the fact of all the infotainment and the climate control buttons being touch buttons, I may have shown a bit of interest.

  6. Best thing to do is not start the car. Idling it doesn't move the oil around the engine like driving it does. You're going to need something like a battery conditioner. I trickle charge does exactly that; carries on charging it whether it needs to or not. When my car was laid up because of my ill health, I just used my optimate I use for my motorbike. That was plugged in between my dad being able to give the car a razz around the block. I don't know whether the cigarette lighter will allow for charging with it being a Canbus system. Also, if you are able to, use a Jerry can and keep the fuel topped up to the brim. This just prevents any water collecting in the fuel tank from condensation. When you do take it out of storage, at any reasonable opportunity you get, add fresh fuel. Petrol starts to go bad after around 6 months. If you can, try and cover the car. If you can't, wash it and look after it as you would if it was on the road. Just to protect the paintwork. I kept mine under a tarp, but still washed and waxed it. Also, lubricate any joint (hinges, locks etc) to keep them free moving.
  7. That was one of the reasons I chose to have a diesel. I know the turbo petrols are a bit more efficient, but they're still able to guzzle fuel when they're under load. No, to be honest, I'm happy hearing the figures which are coming back. It's looking like I'm going to get around 400 miles out of a tank, which if I'm happy about. I'll be driving 100kph max, don't fancy trying to control a trailer at 130kph.
  8. the MPG's which I'm hearing are comparable to the ones which I've seen on whatcar towing reviews back when the Octavia was the towers choice in that weight category.

  12. Unless you're doing anything other than day to day driving in your car, OEM pads are sufficient enough.

Evening all, I'm after what MPG people are getting with TDI engine cars with their trailers / caravans, to anticipate what I'm looking at seeing myself I'm hopefully buying another motorbike orientated trailer for doing the mileage around Europe in the car, unloading the bike and then riding around on that around the area. It's also so I can start to get back to track days, both in this country and possibly abroad. The box trailer I'm looking at getting when fully loaded with the bike and all ancillaries is looking to be around the 900kg mark and has an 'aerodynamic front' with a 3 meter squared front face, with 1.3 meters squared above the roofline. My current motorbike is just a frame allowing my bike to sit in on and doesn't both weigh a lot (400kg (trailer and bike only)) and doesn't stick above the car's roof, so no real wind resistance. Because of that, I'm happily getting 50+mpg when I'm towing that. That's of no real comparison to what I'm looking at towing. Peoples' figures and thoughts please TIA
  14. yeah, they're taking the mick. For you to have had the car for such a short period of time and be noticing the issue, it's for them to be looking into it. If it was proper nippy outside, you've the heater on / heated accessories and the engine wasn't up to full temperature, then I'd understand the stop start not working. However, in recent weeks it hasn't been too cold. As long as you've bought it from a business, you've a lot of legislation on your side as bigjohn has said above.
  15. If you say you've just bought the car, I'd be taking it back there first. Before they sell the car, you'd hope they'd completed a check over of the car, which should include the battery.
  16. Apologies, got the wrong end of the stick there. Yeah, you'd think as the technology improves, so would the ability to illuminate the necessary pasts of the road. From what I'm seeing there, they don't look to have really utilised the LED technology.
  17. I coded it onto my car (just because I could) and I removed it after a few weeks. I just didn't like the flash of light coming on unannounced. I didn't find I gained anymore vision from the fog light on the corner I was turning. Being 6ft3, I'm sitting quite low in the car. Glad it wasn't an extra I paid for on my car I had I on a works tranny van I was asked to 'relocate'. Sat higher up I could see the lights, but I don't know why I need to have the gutter illuminating. Fog lights are for your own visibility in the fog.
  18. The long and short of swapping most parts on our cars nowadays is you need a laptop. As said above there by Langer's, find yourself a local VAG specialist and have them do the necessary work. Be a hell of a lot cheaper than a trip to the stealership.
  19. if it's been identified as at fault and you're looking for a cheaper alternative, it may be worth trying a breakers yard. Only thing is it's a bit of a leap of faith all is OK with that one.
  20. Because things have now been designed to wear out. I've got a selection of tools left to me by my Grandad. They're made of toughened wood and steel. Some are well more than double my age and they're in perfect working order. On the other hand, I was forever replacing some of the tools I used to have to use. Cheap plastic and weaker aluminium.
  21. you could possibly do the reverse of enabling it on OBD eleven and turn it off that way.
  22. to be fair, if you've the option on the infotainment system, I'd just disable it. It's fine if you're on single track unlit B roads, but I found it absolutely pants on unlit sections of motorway. Didn't ever seem able to detect oncoming traffic

  24. I'd get it straight back the garage. And if they start being funny, ask to go out in a similar car and see if that's making the noise. The E10 fuel shouldn't be an issue because the car is rated to run it. If you were running E85, then you'd start to assume that was the culprit.
  25. I've the app on my phone, but it only says the dates it's had a service. Doesn't say what was done.
