The control unit (J538) is near to the pump unit under the back seat base accessed via the round access panel, if you have VCDS you can test the unit or if you have a multi meter you can do a basic voltage test across the two larger contacts ( pins 1 & 6) on the connector that is the supply from fuse 27 it is a live supply and on pin 3 is an ignition ON supply from fuse 1 (10amp)

  17. As it will have Stop/fart it will most likely be an AGM but the ctek 5 or NOCO Genius 5 will be suitable to keep it refreshed

I changed a KPH to MPH/KPH using VagTacho, I took the eeprom data from my original speedo and then wrote that data to the replacement unit and at the same time I added the Welcome message on power up and changed the needle illumination to be permanently on. I found a very good webpage (that I can't find now I think the link is on my old laptop) it was about modifying MK4 Golf speedos

  21. You haven't mentioned what model/make of replacement unit you are thinking about just a list of potential suppliers ??
  22. I used a hot air bower when I replaced all the LEDs in my MK1 Octy speedo a dab of flux on the connections and the solder flowed nicely
  23. According to the wiring diagrams there is only the 1 CTS G62 as stated above, I would get the system checked with something other than that phone app like VCDS I see you're in MK so am I and I have genuine Hex-V2 VCDS
