Intermittent Cutting Out and Other Electrical Witchcraft
I spoke too soon, started being a stroppy wee sod on Saturday when we went out to Auchinleck. It never moved yesterday, and when started this morning took a wee bit of encouragement as it tried to conk out again and required some effort to keep turning over. Also threatened to cut the power with the revs dipping at idle when I drove round to my Granny's (about a mile) to take her bins out. I'll go back out with the code reader(s) tomorrow and pull some 'live' information hopefully. Might tinker about with the VCDS-Lite on the spare craptop computer as well, see where I get with that.

Tyre rumble @ random points
Mine started to go with a low level rumble at random speeds. Don't rule it out entirely.

jars' 2005 Fabia vRS
Cheers, jars. I'll have to try it if Auld Arnie Shark doesn't do it when regassing mine. My Mum gets money off services and stuff, so hoping to chance my luck.

Wheel bearing?

Dodgy OBD2 reader?
Never use mileage to define the condition of a car. Mine has just ticked over to just shy of 61k and is 15 years old and parts are failing of age. It's just a luck of the draw with an old car really.

"aircon bomb"??? Should I be confused or concerned?

Last job on list.
Aye, we've went up in the world, Stewart. Was Angel's Delight last week. And might be again given how much petrol costs.

Cupra Born
They're pretty poor. Even more so at 60k miles/15 y/o. Anyway, I shall refrain from derailing this thread with my ramblings about my hatred towards VW/AG drum brakes.

Oh it needs that. It has currently got the handling characteristics of a blancmange.

Hello
Hello and welcome to Briskoda, Mark. Enjoy the site.

Last job on list.
Aye that's the one! It's been doing it since not long after I bought the car last March. I've got a pair of bushes there from PSB but I'm waiting until I can be bothered to fit them or until I can't stick the noise any longer.

Hifi of Yesteryear vs Today's effort!
I had this Denon setup for some time. Paired with my Fisher amp, Kenwood TT and the Sanyo speakers. All of the featured stuff is still up my loft. The white clip on the tape deck was to hold the door shut as it got smashed up in the post. It's a DRM-700 with many electrical gremlins. It's a 3-head deck though.

Photography Thread
This would have been lost to time had it not been for me backing up all of the photographs from my old phone. I took this c.2018ish.

Door handle issue
VCDS will probably be able to reset the light. Use the owner's map on here to find a member local to you and they'll maybe put the light out in exchange for some beer tokens etc.

Heater always hot
May have a shot of this too. It's rather "roasty toasty" in the car all the time.

I think the console bushes on mine are original. There's a constant and consistent noise that comes anytime I go over a bump. Best way I could describe it is the way my wee brother described it... 'sounds like someone playing the bagpipes'. I've lived with it for ages, didn't come up as an advisory during the MOT test either.

One of Scotlands great drives. Galloway Forest Park: Carrick Forest Drive: Loch Doon & area.
And then there's the fact that the water is usually, if not always, absolutely bloody baltic, even in summer. That definitely catches a lot of folk out.

car recommendation?
Our 2001 Vectra was alright, but it wouldn't have set the world on fire, unlike the Zafira, which most definitely will. As @DieselMonte says, Avensis, Corolla, etc aren't going to go too far wrong compared to other cars, but it's just a luck of the draw at this point. Sep is also right in saying that you should go further afield as well when looking, it allows you to leave your options a little more open and you're more likely to find something a bit more reasonable, perhaps. There you go, an Avensis.

shallow sump question
Also quite a dangerous thing, George.

Best way/place to get vcds
Aye Nige is right here. I've got one of the VCDS cables from Gendan and their services are very good, plus they sent me a free small packet of Haribo jelly sweets which made me feel better about my car not working right at the time. Not buy cheap buy twice in this case... but buy cheap and p*** away your money potentially writing off a car electrically or causing other serious damage. Not worth it to save a couple of quid, IMO.

Servicing costs for electric cars
I'd love to see them do an oil change on 'leccy motor.

car recommendation?
Anyway, back on some sort of topic... maybe. As Sepulchrave says, Octavia (Mk1 or Mk2 will be in your price range) either in estate or hatch guise. Or the PD100 Fabia Mk1 estate, or for more familiarity at least inside somewhat, a PD105 Mk2 Fabia estate, a pre-facelifted one will have this engine. All of these options will give you a lot more space and will fit five. Plus most engine choices will be a bloody rocket in comparison with a 1.2 BZG, I reckon.
