Turn lights sound are missing
I assume 1Z will be the same or very similar. Just take your time, take photos on mobile as you got and as they say reassembly is reverse of above procedure, but don't have the soldering iron too hot, just enough to melt the solder. You will be fine. Just looked at the link you sent, and further down the page I found one for a MK5 Golf 1Z and it's the same, well same photo, fire off an email and ask if it's the same? Trevor

Blue car cambelt and service
Hi, Yep happened to me last year after I did my cam belt and pump, the tensioner stud stripped in the head, result pistons just kissed the valves (inlet), just enough to leave marks in the carbon, head off and helicoil the head, all good now. According to Honest John, it's a common problem after 3-4 changes. My car is a 2007 VRS TDI BMN Hope this helps, Trev

Timing belt snapped
Last year while on furlough I thought I would change the cam belt and water pump on my 2007 VRS TDI, well, it all went ok, run sweet as a nut while waiting for the temp to come up, anyways, put wheels back on and drove it back onto the drive. Next day started it up and it was rattling like a good un, thought strange, was not like that the day before??, took it down the road, was ok off tick over, was more rattly on tick over, got home parked up on the drive, thought sod it sort it tomorrow, tomorrow comes, and it would not start, took the cam belt cover off and there is was.........the cam belt was loose as anything, thought Bu@@er, new engine time, only had 69,000 odd on the clock. Strip down started, first thing was to put bore scope down inlet side as this is where the sound was coming from, all looked ok...........found it, the tensioner stud had stripped the threads in the head (common problem apparently -, after 3 or 4 cam belts thanks to VW putting new studs in the kits), so when you change the stud it weakens the threads by a tiny amount every time. Anyways off with it's head, found the inlet valves had just kissed the pistons (not a full on snog, just a little peck), so got the bits to rebuild it, and helicoiled the stud, head had to come of to do that anyway, head gasket was on it's way out, and number 8 head bolt was loose from the factory!!!!. So rebuilt it and fired it up eventually when the diesel decided to fill the head, and again it was running sweet as. The two photos show the head and block, I think I was very lucky, and no I did not get a lottery ticket LOL:) Trev

Replacing front struts
Well Just done the 2 front dampers, and boy they needed changing, the one on the right side totally shot, push in, and it stays there, the other side push in and well it comes out a bit then stops. Had to grind the ARB drop link off, good job I got new one's to go on. Feels a lot better over the speed humps we have here, no noise at all, so another Job ticked off the list. Trev

Who has owned their Octy for the longest?
You got me on that one Wheel bearing ok for now (reaches out to touch a bit of wood), the reason it had a head gasket is because when I did the cam belt last year the tensioner stud desided it did not like the head anymore and stripped the threads while the engine was running!!!!, made an awful racket, thought the engine was toast, even got a spare just in case, but nope head off pour petrol down the intakes all ok (see photos on the cam belt thread somewhere on here), the valves just kissed the pistons, not a full on snog like you usually get, otherwise it would be on the same head gasket, mind you it was on the way out, and no8 head bolt was loose!!! to(did not crack like the rest of them). Replacing front struts
My last MOT the tester said it will need new bushes soon, no advisory though. Might leave it till next year, might drop the whole lot it's only 8 bolts, not sure what the brake pipes are held on the body or the sub frame? Trev

Did the first 20,000 miles in 9 months when I had it first (was going from MK to Gaydon hence user name) every day. Trev

Replacing front struts
Yeah the bolts do seem to be made from cheese, total carp, years ago you could reuse them with on problems, not any more. When I do have a go at it, looks like soaking everything in Rost off, bloody good stuff that, used to use it when I worked on the rally cars back in 2002. Trev
