  1. You lose internet, but do you lose local network?
  2. I think perhaps you are misunderstanding me, which is probably a fault on my part by clumping all malicious activities on computer into one term, AV and viruses. My apologies, but this is just a habit brought on by a long period of dealing with people who were uninterested in current techie jargon, buzzwords, details, etc. They just wanted their systems to work as cheaply as possible and not need to call me again. My loose description was pertaining to having a layered defence via a primary scan/block (Firewall), secondary (AntiVirus), and tertiary (Malware/Spyware/Rootkits/BHO's/etc which I just group together with viruses as the effect is pretty much the same), with other on demand (i.e. not in memory) scanners and online scanners if anything should happen to get through all 3, with a final list of specific removal tools as a last resort. My intention was not to advise 2 memory resident AV specific scanners where problems might occur as one battles the other over scanning rights, etc. But there are resident programs (Firewalls/Malware) that compliment resident AV scanners as I have yet to find a program that will deal with it all, rather than claim to. TBH, most of the systems that came to me either had a single install of norton or mcafee on them, which as I stated earlier are a waste of resources. My advice was just that, advice. My experience comes from dealing with people who don't know, don't claim to know and don't want to know. Qualifications If the advice is not wanted, or considered bad advice, that's cool. But it is just advice. I'll stay out in future EDIT: I would also add that 'startup control panel' and 'unlocker.exe' are extrememly helpfull in cleaning the startup without trawling the registry and force deleting 99% of locked memory resident files, respectively. These are usually the first programs I try to install on a knacked system. As some Viruses/Spyware/Malware can corrupt the installs before you've had a chance to install them.
  3. Me having a laugh? You are very naive to think 1 will cover you, no matter how overpriced or popular. What about the ones your AV doesnt detect? Its not going to tell you if it doesnt know what it is, is it? Ive seen PCs riddled with viruses and have needed multiple programs to get rid of them because 1 just doesnt cut it.. With some viruses, what 1 program will detect, it might not detect others, whereas another program will, and so on. After all, a scanner is only as good as virus submissions, updates, etc. As a virus is released AV companies don't find out about it within seconds. Bascially, 1 AV will NOT pick up everything. The built in securities are only good if you actually understand what the potentially confusing messages are and the consequences of putting 'allow' to unknown programs or 'deny' to programs that are needed. Thats why a fortnightly scan is a good idea. We are talking people who might not be PC savvy so might put 'continue' or 'allow' when they shouldnt, hardly good advice to rely on something that requires human decisions if they dont undestand it. Its ok for you to say 'I only need one', but for non-savvy people its a big mistake to rely on one on-access scanner with no full scheduled scan. I wouldnt recommend it to anyone. BTW: As for on-access scanners slowing the computer down, some are worse than others, but better than getting a virus and not knowing how to deal with it. I HAVE had a virus, lots of them. Even with all the expensive or free AV programs they WILL get in.
  4. You also want to try plugging in to a different wall socket, preferably the main one.
  5. Saw one of these again yesterday. A Koenig KS8 (Tuned BMW 850), made in the days when Koenig did conversions instead of building their own. TBH I thought it was a bad (very) wide kit car job that had the cheek to put Koenig logos on it. A little investigation proved me wrong lol. Didnt like it at all. Waste of a good 8 series IMO. It had obviously seen better days, the panels looked rough and the paint looked faded. Its the third time Ive seen it so am hoping I can get my own pictures of it next time now its local.
  6. If it wasnt for the value for money aspect, I would have gone for something else. Its all about value.
  7. Also you cant rely on one or two AV scanners, you need a whole bunch to stay ahead now, particulalry if your not PC savvy or visit websites of questionable nature. There are plenty of free programs for this. What you need is as many on demand scanners as you can and do a full scan on each once a fortnight. You need a couple of good active scanners (any more and you will slow the computer right down so it becomes counter-productive). Plus a few specialized tools to target certain nasties You need to be careful though with these, some can change things that might cause problems if you don't know what they do. What you could do is run a program called hijackthis, it will create a log file of your current computer state. Paste it onto here and it will give a better idea to us whats going on. And IMO, Norton and Mcafee suck badly, too overweight and bloated. Most overrated programs I know. People hold too much faith in them and then wonder why things go wrong.
  8. -ABS/ESP failure (a couple of threads about this) -Airbag seat wiring loom (bad design) -Rear washer pump hose disconnected (wet boot carpet/water in wheel well)
  9. Sorry to hear that, I hate it when others do crap like this. Make sure any metalwork or other structures behind the bumper arent bent or damaged, happened before when someones hit a friends car, the bumper popped back out on its own with just a crack and chips in the paint but it had caved in the boot area, you wouldnt have known if you hadnt lifted the boot lid, the guy had tried the 'it will buff out' and tried to make a hasty exit.
  10. Adds a lot more units to the game in general (pun intended), and if you have the Zero Hour expansion as well it adds more diversity to each general. Well worth a download (it is free) plus its still an active mod. I play it on LAN against my son all the time and he loves it. http://www.moddb.com/mods/cc-shockwave Prefer it to the C&C Allstars mod (adds units from C&C1 and RA to Generals to 'see who would win') which is another favoured generals mod, doesn't do it for me I'm afraid. There's lots of other generals mods on that site, plus maps, tools, etc. Its a good site for modding other games too.
  11. Sorry, but its hard to pick 1 game. There are many Ive played for hours, over and over, but something always takes over eventually There arent many games that can hold you once you have either completed them or got stuck on one bit no matter how hard you try, especially older games that weren't open ended or sandbox style. For instance, I completed Alan Wake in around 19 hours. Excellent game, love the atmospherics, storyline, etc. But I haven't even looked at it since, I only died a couple of times and there wasnt any real challenge. The GTA series on the other hand..... Fun times on multiplayer GTA1 Ah the many hours of C&C LAN, sweet memories lol. You want to try the Shockwave mod
  12. It depends on what generation of gaming your talking about; Early 80's: River Raid, Blue Max, Mr Do, Star Raiders, Mutant Camels, Boulderdash, Choplifter. Late 80's/Early 90's: Settlers, Supercars 2, Syndicate, Theme Park, Pirates Gold!, Lemmings 1 & 2, Elite 2: Frontier, Powermonger. Mid 90's: Super Mario Kart, Super Mario World, Wipeout, Twisted Metal, Destruction Derby, Doom 2, Transport Tycoon, Zelda LTTP. Late 90's: Duke3d, C&C (up to Generals), GTA, Jurassic Park Trespasser, Starcraft, Screamer Rally, Zelda OOT & MM. Early 00's: GTA (3-SA), Half Life Series, hmm, not much else springing to mind Late 00's: Gears of War 1&2, GTA4, Dead Rising, Left4Dead, Halo Wars, COD series, Borderlands, Zelda TP.. Recent Games; SplitSecond, Just Cause 2, Red Dead Redemption, Dead Rising 2, AvP. Plus loads of arcade games throughout... Probably loads more, they are just the ones off the top of my head. Is it me or are games getting far too easy? Ive completed more games in the last 3 years than the previous 19 put together. The quickest being 5 hours!. My reactions are slower and I have less brain cells so I should be completing less games. hmmm.
  13. Probably just be a cutoff date like rear seatbelts for cars after 1987
  14. Well there's my 'learn something new every day' right there. Interesting stuff. Thanks Mike
  15. Dont you have to change the cluster to add Maxidot? So couldn't the cluster have come from a PD? Or can you use your original dials? :wonder:
  16. The toys depend on the options added to the car and the age of the car (some options became standard later on).
  17. Ahhhhhh, its got your eyes Bryan. Have you thought of a name yet? In all seriousness, looking good Bryan, am jealous of the track display
  18. What stereo is it? Sometimes the release keys don't release the side catches very well (if your stereo has these). Is there any access to get your hand behind it? (behind trim, removing ashtray, din blanking plate, etc)Some stereos are secured to the back of the space by a bolt at the back in the middle. In most cases this is not used as a determined scrote is not bothered about wrecking your dash with a screwdriver to get the stereo out, and a new dash is not a cheap thing. If not, see if you can push it towards you from the back (with the release keys in if it needs the catches undoing). It could just be a tight fit. Also check online for the installation manual, it will tell you if it has catches on the side and the proper way of inserting/removing the stereo.
  19. Gateway 300 uses USB and powers it too, had a 2.5" HDD running on it no problems. Plus you can keep your changer.
  20. Volume low or muted? Possibly loose wire in the back of the stereo. Could just have been a glitch that remedied itself after power off/on. My stereo crashes every now and then, worst case scenario is pulling the fuse, normally just an ignition off and on again solves it. The more complex and computer-like these things get, the more common it will get. I wouldn't worry too much unless it starts becoming more frequent or starts causing other problems with the electrics (unlikely).
  21. I had a nightmare getting insurance this year. Renewal was nearly doubled, best quote was 100 less than renewal (the green insurance company) but didnt include breakdown, etc and Green have a lot of, IMO, unfair policy restrictions. Had to stay with current insurer and even they gave me a 2 page addendum to my policy of new restrictions they are taking out. The 'beat your renewal' (notice renewal, not quote!) did indeed beat it, but with less options, more restrictions, and still wasnt as cheap as my best quote from Green (lack of flexibility, etc.). Knott, Flux, Sky were about as much use as a choccy teapot. I thought insurance was meant to be cheaper as you got older, more no claims, etc? *sigh* That and wit fuel prices, I'm verging on the VRS having to go
  22. Thanks, hopefully I can draw a line under this now and get it done..
  23. Things have really come one, makes you wonder how many scenes on your favorite US shows are genuine. Surely some of those more boring scenes would have been cheaper just to shoot on location than pay for all the CGI? Cant beat the old 'on the bonnet viewing the driver' shots, they would turn the wheel left and right while on a straight road and it had no bearing on which way the car would go on the background Now thats cruise control!
  24. That plastic man looks like hes got a right set of 'conkers' on him no wonder he has to stand like John Wayne No Octy or Fabia RS+? That Platin Grey Metalic looks nice
