  1. A small independent would most likely give you an honest appraisal just by having a quick look ,without any work being done. I know mine would .
  2. Hopefully the garage is telling the truth. I have a 1.9 with the same mileage and if I had similar problems I would check the brake fluid to the clutch cylinders had been replaced and bleed.(very easy to overlook when changing the brake fluid ) Second I would check the gear cable adjustment, its a bit of a fiddle ,and in fact when I tried it I made things worse ,and it took 2 more attempts to get it right. I also changed the gearbox oil some years ago as a precaution.
  3. There was a case a while back on the forum ,where a similar thing happened ,and it was put down to a water logged loom. Over spill from the windscreen wash bottle was the suspect, and since then I keep sponge packed around the filler cap to collect any splashes. I have always checked the drain holes in the wings are clear by pouring a milk bottles worth of water down them at each service I do,and that,s only because I had car with the car's on board computer mounted in the scuttle and if the holes became blocked it would write of the unit at great expense. Still might revisit this and look under the bonnet tomorrow and double check things are draining away properly.
  4. Yes I understand it all one hub unit now,and I requires a hub puller.Gone are the days when you could buy a bearing kit for a few pound, and easily do it yourself. I must confess I've never done one ,and would have to look at the manual. But probably I'd do the same as you and let my trusted non franchise garage do it to save the hassle.
  5. Yes before I had my front console bushes replaced (last year)on my Scout 2007 ,I used to spray them with lithium grease about once a month. The noise till then would sound awful ,like something was loose under the car.It was worst in winter time
  6. Yes nothing seems to match the small footprint and large carrying capacity.Even some bigger cars don't have the carrying capacity of the Roomster. The Roomsters size means it's easy to park, especially at my new local hospital indoor car park which has very tight bends to traverse.Anyway can't get rid of mine yet, got 3 years of oil change stock in the garage ,unless the anything happens re the anti diesel lobby prices it off the road? Also interesting to see examples of scrappage cars placed outside my local dealers ,advertising the fact. They all look good cars certainly not rusty bangers!
  7. Thanks to both for your replies,it through forums like this that you learn so much. Must be the common rail engines that the pipes are under great pressure,or perhaps Ive got that wrong as well.
  8. Thanks for the useful tips. Until you wrote this I would have been a bit shy of going anywhere the tandem pump ,somehow believing the fuel pipes were under high pressure?
  9. Thanks for the reply, and very good to know.
  10. + Yes I thought about changing my SCOUT wheels to a smaller size ,but was concerned about insurance implications. Has anyone approached their insurance company about the issue and were they understanding? We all know how they will find anyway they can ,to refuse a claim. There was something recently in the press about notifying your insurance if you changed to winter tyres, but in the end the powers that be ,said that wasn,t necessary. Anyway just a thought to ponder. I will keep to my existing wheels and tyres ,and keep the tyre pressures to the minimum specification. If we has good normal roads the Scout rough ride thing, would not be an issue.
  11. Yes know what you mean the headlights are very poor.Rightly or wrongly on country lanes and roads I switch on the Scouts so called " fog lights ? "to illuminate the sides of the road. At least this way I can see where the verges ,kerbs and hedges are.
  12. Yes this person was also known to go in the dealership showroom on a Saturday afternoon (when the service department was closed) shouting where can I get service for my car? Must have been a nightmare for the sales staff, and scary for customers.
  13. Along time ago I worked with someone ,who used to say he as a young lad was a grease monkey at Brooklands .Since then Ive often thought it dose not need someone skilled to service a car ,its so simple nowadays, apart from the safety inspection of the vehicle. Following your tale , I've revised that ideal ,and you do need someone who knows what there doing! Funny enough the chap in his senior years used to have his car serviced by main dealers ,but used to stick bits of cotton over various service parts to confirm they had been attended to,and then play merry hell when he found filters hadn,t been cleaned or tappets adjusted.Thought it all a bit strange as the time messing around sticking cotton in place he could have done the service himself, but there you go. Anyway Ive rambled on a bit, good luck I hope it all works out all right for you ,after all this stress and bother. We have all been there at some time or other, and if it isn't cars it something else.
  14. Thank you Blackbird that makes two of us at least ,as everyone else on the forum seems to be minted.Still I suppose you can be tight but still be minted! Only the other day I was apologising to my new passengers for the bone shaking ride,so I might look out for some scrapyard bargains. Researching on the internet it seems the low profile tyres give the hard ride ,and not alloy wheels as i had thought previously. Alloy wheels give a better ride than steel,or so they say. So I assume your wheel bargains were alloys with 185x60x14 tyres. Mind you if it wasn,t for our terrible potholed roads ,there would be no problem.
  15. Blackbird tell us where you got your 15" wheels,ie from a scrapyard "fabia wheels?" or new. Apologies for going off thread, but the hard ride is the only drawback with the 1.9 scout.
  16. Yes standing looking at the car just now,the plans for an after market sunroof fit ,might not work due to the sloping roof line. Im sure the roof would have to be flat. So if you want a sunroof opening or other wise ,the only option I am afraid is to change the car.
  17. One thing I miss on my Scout is a sunroof. Before I bought it secondhand I had it in mind to have a simple open and tilt glass sunroof fitted ,by a local specialist firm. But when I had ownership I realised that the roof lining had a raised central division serving the rear courtesy light,so my plans were thwarted. The only way I can see to do it would be to replace the headlining with a standard roomster one from a scrapyard.(that is assuming a standard car does not have the central channel) The rear courtesy light would be recovered with the wiring, and the sunroof fitted. Not a panoramic sunroof I know, and I would be wary of the curtain air bags at the sides when installing the head lining.. Just my thoughts and I know deep down I will never do it.
  18. Yes seems like really bad luck.Make sure you get a quote from a independent VW specialist. I am sure you will get good honest advice as well as a considerable reduction in price. Good luck
  19. Did you mean this one.Oh to be young again!
  20. Yes thank you ,refund went back into my account today,so all is well. I must be more careful in future.
  21. Yes at the time SLRhut and Valuebasket where having a price war between them dropping the price every day.I choose the wrong one Valuebasket on the premise of a 2 year warranty.and the union jack motif on the web site, plus a base in Lancashire. Valuebasket say they will refund my money in 7 days. Reading threads or woe on other forums ,it seems stock may come from Hong Kong, and not from this country. Anyway lesson learned.
  22. Yes thanks I have just asked for refund by e-mail. I'm not holding my breath though,as what I have read in other posts this may be one tricky outfit. If Im right this outfit is going to get the attention of the British news media sooner or later. May have to put this one down to experience. But If Im wrong I will apologise and let the forum know.
  23. Be careful if your thinking of buying a camera over the internet. Valuebasket seems to come out the cheapest, with a long warranty, and on their website they spout wonderful reviews. Anyway since taking my money almost a month ago ,no camera has arrived although it showed as being in stock. So looking at reviews elsewhere you get a very different picture. That said for some people they came good, but the bad reviews seem really really damming. Perhaps they will eventually send my camera ,but the wait has taken the lustre of the purchase. Blow the £100,to £150 saving next time it will be John Lewis and nothing less. Hope this might help others not to make the same mistake as me.
  24. How about the DACIA Logan MCV. Its mentioned in Auto Express Driver Power survey as coming in at 13th position. Don,t know about luggage space but I think it would be comparable. No good for badge snobs, but then I suppose badge snobs would never drive a Skoda. Bob
  25. Yes unfortunately I didn,t buy a calendar, but looking back at the first draft I see I had two pictures included , and not the one I previously thought. I think NZ100 s picture is the first small one in January
