Yep.. ive now joined the elite(ish) club of having the tool-less oil removal treatment in the lake district. (although as you can see... quite common in that particular location lol)

Hit the hump a bit too quickly, got airborne and the white marks are where i landed HARD.

i pretty much new straight away what would have happend so i pulled over straight away and cut the engine, and sure enough the oil was pouring out my sump...

Took a few phonecalls to get the AA into gear, at first they wanted to class it as a road-traffic-accident and charge me 110quid just to take it to the nearest garage...

eventually i got someone who put the call on and had it recovered.

unfortunately because your only allowed one recovery per "incedent" i chose to have my car taken back to manchester, which required much faffing about on AA's part, and having to change wagons 3 times... but im finally home, 10 hours after it happend

it also meant i had to cut short my camping trip but hey ho.. **** happens :(

Whoops

Claim from the council?

Claim from the council?

for driving too fast?

for driving too fast?

I'm assuming is a NSL road, so 60 or less?

If was driven to the speed lim, then road should have clear signs telling drivers they must reduce speed.

speed limits are exactly that, maximums not targets.

All I can say is 'Yeeeeeee-Haaaaaaa!'

bu99er.

Look on the bright side, rather that one than the new one, eh?

Sure these things happen. Sorry to hear it.

Colin, Colin, Colin.

Not only have you let yourself down, you've let the sheep farmers of Cumbria down, you've let Sebastian Loeb down, and most of all you've let the imminent purchaser of your Octy down as well.

like the statement! :D

looks like it could have been alot worse! i no myself wot those roads can be like, as my engine mounts gave way causing the engine to land on the subframe/road, but i was in a vectra at the time :D

oops.

At least you had the sense to switch off before any major damage was done. Gutting none the less mate.

Bit of a blow that mate but as you say looking at the road you are not alone.

Ouch m8 sorry to hear however you seem to be taking it extremely well i might add!

Id still put in a claim to the council, lets face it the worst they will say is "NO" and you aint lost anything.

If several vehicles have had the same problem, which by the looks of things they have, then surely the council will/should of done something !?!

Regardless of the speed you were doing could they ever prove it?

Just a though i mean do what you want but how much does a new sump cost?

Have you got any pics of the sump?

Purely out of interest when you did get "AIRBORNE" did you have a big grin on your face, i bet ya did :P

any pics of the sump?(whats left of it anyway!)

Ill try get pics of the sump when it gets sorted on monday.

To be honest its a common thing across the VAG range.. as said in another thread, have seen meets where 4 octys have had the same happen on the same day..

Wasn't there a campaign ages ago to get Skoda UK to retrofit sump guards to Octy vRS's as there were so many accidents?

as said in another thread, have seen meets where 4 octys have had the same happen on the same day..

The pictures from that meet are on my website.

Briskoda National Meet December 2002

Was it really December 2002, at least it looks like a different road.

I don't know about a new sump, but I think you need to have the suspension checked out as well, I have driven a few cars over the years that I have had airbourne and never cracked a sump !!!

No, really it IS common on the 1.8t because the sump hangs low... i can name at least a dozen people on this forum who have done the same...

everything will be checked over when its in the air.. but the sump does hang slightly lower than the suspension components.. so its that that takes the beating when bottoming out

Oh Colin.

Ho hum, happens to the best of us ;)

Unlucky sir. As others say, at least you shut down before things ground to a halt themselves.

Years ago a mate of mine had an MG Montego (yeah, I know ) and he lowered/uprated his suspension. I think he went through about a sump a month driving a certain road around here that is very undulating.

And he never learned
