N95 Vs N96

Featured Replies

I've had my N95 for 18months now so I've been looking around to see if the market has moved on since then. I'm not really desperate to change the phone which is really unusual for me as I'm usually bored of a phone after 6 months, but the N95 after upgrades is such a complete package I'm loathed to venture elsewhere.

IGizmo had a feature on the N96, but aside from expanded memory (16G) and some futuristic DVB-H TV format that doesn't even work yet, I can't see what the difference is. Does this phone have more processing power?

I love the N95 but a slicker faster interface wouldn't go amiss. (The 3G piephone won't do as it hasn't got 5MP camera on board)

Maybe wait for the N96 v2? (Like the 8Gb N95)

i am waiting for the N96 myself as like you i normally plan my next shiney thing after the phone for 6 months but not this time :)

I have the normal N95 as well, and currently have no plan to change.

Apart from the TV thing which as you say doesnt work yet, the N96 offers nothing new. When 16GB microsd cards come out you can upgrade your current N95 to 16GB storage anyway, so thats nothing extra.

As above, ive just swithed from using my piephone back to the N95 and am much happier with it!

The piephone is a good phone, but once you get past the fancy user interface and fantastic web-browser the N95 is the better phone.

My plan is to keep the piephone and then start using it as my work phone once v2 firmware is released with exchange push support..

for now im happy with my n95, being able to sit on the bus and actually download and install apps etc makes my journeys so much shorter.. whilst with teh piephone, theres only so much you can look at on the interweb on a slow connection and with no flash support :(.

The main driver to upgrade from a N95-1 for me would be the extra RAM. to run more apps... and thats my geeky excuse :D

(incedently ive installed joikuspot on the N95 which allows me to use the wifi as a 3g router for the iphone!)

I'm waiting for the N96 too!

No one will give me a release date though

hey, i work in a nokia service point and the word is it should be august / september time the n96 will be availible , price tag sim free around the 600 - 700 mark.

Excellent!

Should be just in time for my new contract :D

I've heard August too.

Rumoured to have double the processing power of the N95, and adaptive ram which can use memory/storage as ram just like a PC can. I've heard it can boot in half the time of the current N95 firmware - and a mates boots from off in 30 secs (more like S4 nokia's do).

16gb inbuilt mem + micro SDHC support leads to a theoretical current maximum of 48gb in your pocket.

I hear the sales package will at last include full sat nav - just like buying a tomtom where as the current sales packages requires the purchase of turn by turn sat nav.

I'm due an upgrade around then too :D

the N96 has 16Gb internal aswell as a memory card slot so 32Gb is possible ;)

also has greater ram like the 8Gb so runs aps better :D

Nope still 48gb.

16 internal+ 32 card (largest currently made) = 48 ;)

i was going on nokia's tech spec, maybe it only supports a 16gb card?

I'll watch with interest, as this is probably the most likely upgrade path for me too. More than happy with the '95 at the moment though

Steve

i'm happy to have mine back :D

couldn't wait for the insurance to fanny about so bought a new screen off ebay for £25 delivered :D

very easy to fit too!

Nokia site says:

16GB internal flash memory, plus microSD memory card slot (hot swappable) for expandability and flexibility

But does mention 16gb card being included in some sales packs (store/operator dependant)

I've done some digging about the processor used in the N96. Apparently it's a new type of chip streamlined for audio and video. There are some folk who moan that the N96 will have an ARM 9 CPU whereas the N95 has an ARM 11 CPU, but I don't think this matters too much, it's how the processor uses the CPU that's important.

Here is a link that geeky types will probably do a sex wee over. I haven't got a clue what it's on about TBH.

Isnt the ARM 9 used in just about every PDA going?

IIRC only Nokia used the ARM 11, and with the issues people moan about the N series and sybian speed & stability, perhaps they are playing it safe?

N96 release date has moved from August to October on CarPhoneWarehouse website.....

Grrrrr.

:(

Release dates moving back? Surely not!

:P

As long as it's ready for December for my upgrade.

Things id like to see as standard in the N96:

Nokia Conversation properly intergrated (although i belive this is half-solved on the N95 8gb model anyway as the contacts app is always running in mem) - this is a very very handy app for organising txt messages by contact, altho it slows the phone down the more txt messages you have and can be a 10-15 sec delay when trying to use contacts for the first time

Auto screen rotation - again already in the N82

Xenon Flash - having done a comparison between my N95 and a N82, there is a big difference in camera quality in low light.

Proper bluetooth support! (how hard can it be???!)

Ability to charge from mini-usb

web-browser improvements.. although i technically have been spoilt by safari on the iphone lol

Oh, a higher res screen would be nice too... think its bout time we got VGA :D

EDIT: having just read the specs

Screen is same as N95 8gb, No Xenon flash, Slower CPU

Ahh you are correct. - the N95 had ARM11 and a dedicated 3d graphics chipset.

N96 is Arm9 and no dedi graphics... and the CPU is slower too 266mhz instead of 350 :(

hopefully FP2 will be nicely optimised

what do you mean with proper bluetooth support? i've had an issue with bluetooth on my N95.

what do you mean with proper bluetooth support? i've had an issue with bluetooth on my N95.

more bluetooth profiles, headset, handsfree, remote contact sync etc.. all the stuff SE phones have had for a while.

When i had my SE Z600 a few years ago, when connected to my Parrot CK3000 it actually had an extra menu on the phone for the parrot and could control all the settings from it, mic gain/volume, contact sync etc.

When you connected a nokia to it, it would be active all the time, ie any noise the phone made would come thru the stereo. the SE would only activate the carkit if i answered a call using it, like connect on demand.. saved battery life too
