Tiny specks of rust on surface of paint - how to get rid?

Only had the car since monday, and today is the first wash. Have noticed tiny little specks of rust on the outside of the paint. They're really easy to see as the cars silver. What is the best way to get rid of them? Polish doesn't seem to take them off, and I refuse to t-cut a brand new car. Bug and tar remover seems to work a little, but is extremely slow...One of the worst places is the underside of the spoiler...please help.

Err I would take it back to the dealer and claim on the warranty for the paint work. IIRC don't they have like a 10 year anti perforation warranty ? Your car shouldn't be going rusty unless the point of the rust is where a dent/scrap is or it has been resprayed !

The rust is on the outside of the paint.

Hmm...not sure how the outside of the paint rusts, nor indeed a plastic spoiler?

Suspect it may just be really stubborn flecks of brown dirt...

Tried a tar spot remover?

Have tried turtle wax bug and tar remover which seems to work but very very slowly. Booked it into the dealer for Monday...don't expect to start renovating the paintwork on a brand new car.

I had an old clio that was like that, it looked like the rust was on the paint but on closer inspection there was a tiny pin head hole which was causing the rust to come to the surface. Either way the dealer should sort it as new cars shouldn't rust.. end of !

I suspect the storage yard is next to either..

1) An industrial area

2) A scrap pile on a dockyard site.

Alternatively, you don't live / work anywhere near British Steel (Corus) do you ?

I do work near british steel, but have been off all week. I want to get it sorted and polished up before I do start to take it down to work on tuesday...

You need a clay bar mate - that will shift it with minimum fuss

:holmes: Aha! When I took delivery on my new Skoda last week I came accross a rusty wad of steel wool jammed in the wiper blades.

Could steel wool be the culprit? I assumed they used it to tickle some rough finishes... Could be steel wool droppings stuck to the lacquer coat.

Hello Ventmore, I had exactly the same thing on my silver vRS. It is NOT rust, but must be something they pick up while in the storage compound. Brake dust from a nearby railway :confused:

Got mine off (also mostly on the front spoiler) with Autoglym resin polish, elbow grease and a few choice swear words repeated in a random order.

Hey SUTTS...thanks for the info...tried autoglym resin polish today with no luck...Am sending it to the boys at Slacks in Middlesbrough...their valeting guys are gonna sort it out...It's not that I'm afraid of a little elbow grease, it's just that I believe the car should have been pristine when I picked it up...

Just a thought, if you have a GOOD bodyshop near you go & see them & ask their professional opinion prior to taking it to the dealer & also the "proper" way of correcting it so that you dont get fobbed off with a lame excuse or they try & mask the problem, If its anything more than staining on the top of the paint I would reject the car hard as it is. If its anything within the paint who knows where it will appear next

It is definitely only on the outside of the paint. Apparently it is industrial fallout. I did a search after reading that the clay bar I was ordering was good for industrial fallout. Check out this page...

I don't think I could reject the car as by all accounts it is a natural occurence. Will let the dealer polish it out on Monday, and deal with it myself in the future with the clay bar.

Edited...PS mobtob...how long do Meguiars normally take to deliver.

Personally I wouldnt let the dealer sort it, I would try the clay bar first

Only because the dealer will probably use something harsh to remove it, you could end up with swirly paint afterwards

But I'm a ponce when it comes to my paintwork :P

Cheers Topmob - I have also orderred one of the clay bars as I do so much motorway driving and like u, I am a total tart when it comes to polishing. :thumbup:

I had this on my corrola, its just really really stubourn tar looks like tiny little pin pricks of dust. Tell tail sign is if you rub it really hard witha polish (auto glym) the tar will smudge

Mark (the WaxWizard) saw this on a uPVC window sill when he was doing our cars and called it 'rail dust', which would concur with a previous post. In our case it was dust from where someone had been using a grinder and, as it was still hot, had stuck to the uPVC.

One good rub with the clay bar (also available from Mark) sorted it out - it "pulls" the contamination off the surface and it hasn't returned. :thumbup:

I noticed this on my Fabia when I got it home a few weeks ago. A small patch of about 5 small specks in the gap between the top of the rear window and boot lid. Mates started taking the **** saying it was going rusty already :finger: . I think it's just crap from wherever they are stockpiled, haven't hassled the dealer about it cos it's going to get dirty anyway!
