Felicia 2.0 engine transplant thread

Featured Replies

From those photos, it looks like the standard rad uses a rear-mounted fan and shroud? If so, would changing for a front mounted dual fan offer enough space for the alternator to clear the radiator comfortably?

it's not touching on the shroud, the shroud doesn't cover the full width of the radiator, the alternator touches the actual radiator core itself..

besides, i though of a solution anyway

oh yeah, one other thing i forgot to mention... i accidently snapped off the end of the dipstick tube because it stuck out too far, i'm going to replace this with a steel one and relocate it slightly

Watch moving the mounting if it upsets how the engine sits, if its wonky you sould end up with torque steer and/or some serious tramlining.

quite right:thumbup: i'm working with the idea that so long as the crank is parallel to the wheels/axle it should be ok:O

yup, get the driveshafts pointing straight out if you can.

had a few thoughts on intake/injection systems.... above (pictured) is the upper manifold fitted to the american spec mk3 golf gti, and it will fit on this later engine, the trouble is getting hold of one in this country.... this would be perfect because it puts the throttle body on the left rather than on the right hand side which means i could possibly use the oe felicia airbox and filter, also the the spout for the brake servo vacuum hose is in a better place. the only potential downside is that it is impossible to change the spark plugs without taking it all off

A lot of MK3 Cabs had that manifold.

random thought, but is the bonnet going to clear that tom?

Lamp pod if needs be ;)

at the moment, i'm not 100% sure that the bonnet will clear it, but i'm pretty certain it will, if not i can allways drop the engine down a bit by adding spacers etc to the mountings, or fit a giant lamp pod:rolleyes:

bonnet bumps like the williams clio. lol

i need to remove the alternator and put it at the bottom of the block because it fouls on the radiator.... and bugger me, my back is hurting

I am looking that putting my 1.8t into motor space is easier than your 2.0. :)

Good luck with this project. I will keep under review your work. ;)

jj, i know. :)

We will see, what my car can during first test drive. It will be soon. Then i'll write my experiences.

Hi, i just read this whole thread and its awsome, its "features"(?) like this that i joined for it makes for excellent reading and shows what can be done.

good luck for the completion and I look forward to reading about it

i think the solution to the getting the engine to sit straight is going to involve making a new one of these

what i need to do is, move the engine back approx 2cm, then drop it down approx 1.5cm to the get the crank parallel with the ground and parallel with the axle/hubs

in order to do move the engine to where i need it to be i have to cut a notch out of the main bearer :o, then think of some way of strengthening it afterwards

from the main bearer!!!!!! there must be some way of modding, if not making a new alu mount?

if ya need any bit an bobs, give us a shout.

i dont know what'll happen yet till i try it, because i have to counter in the fact that the rubber will compress with the weight on the engine, so it may sit there nicely without having to give it the chop

big thanks to the guys at german and swedish in portsmouth for sorting out a good price on this:D these coilpacks are over £120 for vw last time i checked

brief explanation of the wasted spark/DIS system

coilpack.jpg

2 = Ignition Controlled 12v feed, (normally from fuel pump relay)

4= Earthed to Battery via wiring loom..

1+3 = these are grounded in turn by a transistor inside the ecu, this completes the 'circuit' and makes a magnetic field on the LT side of the transformer, this in turn induces a HT voltage and hence a spark on the secondary winding of each transformer as applicable.. the spark plugs themselves are earthed via the cylinder head

A = Spark Plug Cylinder 1

B = Spark Plug Cylinder 2

C = Spark Plug Cylinder 3

D = Spark Plug Cylinder 4

you can see that in that plugs 1 + 4 and 2 + 3 always fire simultaniously.... the 'live' plug fires a few degrees before the power stroke, and the 'dead' or 'wasted' spark occurs a few degrees before the exhaust stroke begins
