I'm not sure about this - Advice needed

2004 (04) Skoda Fabia vRS .. silver .. TDi diesel 5dr on eBay, also, Skoda, Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 29-Aug-08 20:23:44 BST)

Just seen this on Ebay but is this too good to be true? It looks good and according to the listing it's garaged and well looked after. Two points do concern me though:

1. "Local car, 1 previous owner.. originally suppied by main dealer Simpson Skoda, then purchased by myself again from Simpson Skoda. I have owned the car 16 months."

How does this make it only one owner? Shouldn't it technically be three?

2. "Mileage 42,759miles.. Full Skoda service history up to 30,845miles. (4 skoda stamps in book)"

This bit has really confused me. How does it have 4 stamps but only FSSH up to 30k? Also has it been serviced or due a service. Personally the 1st thing I would do is service the car when I got it just in case.

I've just asked the seller about these points and asked if the timimg belt has been done. Still waiting for a response.

So what do you guys think? Is it worth going for and how much should it be worth? If it's as good as claimed then I think its worth £6k is this too much?

Thanks in advance to all who help me.

Edit: I think I've worked out about the ownership. He has had the car as a company car which was sold back to the dealer and then repurchased by the current owner.

If car was supplied by Simpson Skoda then purchased by current owner "again from Simpson Skoda" that makes it 2 owners so long as Simpson Skoda never registered it to themselves??.

You need the Vrs lads to tell you its worth but £6000 doesn't sound bad to me if its in good nick. Always wary of Ebay cars though. Take care.

Dont forget, its only on its first day of listing. I reckon it will go a lot higher once its been on for a few days.

Just had this response to my email:

"Hi Martyn

As stated the car has one previous owner, that owner purchased the car from simpson skoda, he then traded the car back to simpson skoda.

I then purchased the car from simpson skoda.. which makes me the 2nd owner.

It has 4 stamps because it has been serviced 4 times as the manufacturer states.

The car is on a variable service schedule, which means a symbol lights up on the dash when it needs a service.( not lit )

It could do with an oil change. timing belts are changed at 60,000 miles.

Regards

Lee"

I would be carrying out a full service if I got it just to be sure and I would probably do the timing belt also. Almost lost the engine in my current car because of this. Got it checked just in time.

So it will show up as 2 owners but technically the dealer has owned it twice, so that's 4.

Yeah I realise Ebay can be dodgy but his feedback looks very good. Seems to be an antique lights seller. He's also been buying kids games and things so does look OK. I will still be wary though and won't commit to anything unless I'm 100% sure.

Get it HPi checked first.

The belt interval is 60,000 or 4 years so it's due now.

He's also wrong about it being on variable, it'll be on fixed which should be 12 months or 10,000 or 12,000 mile not sure which but a Fabia VRS owner should be along soon. I'm sure this particular model was never available to go on the variable schedule.

How much am I looking at? £20? or are there cheaper ones?

The Fabia cannot be put on variable because the ECU does not support variable servicing and the required sensors are also not fitted to the engine.

So it will show up as 2 owners but technically the dealer has owned it twice, so that's 4.

If you are going to count all the owners like that why not include Skoda Cz and Skoda UK?

That makes it 6 all together!

If you bought the car and registered it in your name it should show as 2 previous owners. Unless Simpsons/Skoda UK registered it before the first owner bought it. The seller has said the first owner bought it new though.

I thought this was the case. So if I serviced the car without the service light being on would it automatically know that it had been done? Or would it have to be reset manually when it came one sometime after the service or reset it with VAG COM?

This might be indicative of the market. Last week, fellow member got £6000 on ebay for his 2005, FSH, 36K miles, 2 owners, Black Magic Fabia vRS.

It would have to be reset manually, however it can be done by the owner without vag-com. Instructions are in the fabia user manual on how to do this.

No what I mean is if I service the car while the indicator is not lit then the light will come on sometime after the service. Do then just reset it myself (I know how to do this) and then wait until it comes up again or service the car again when it gets to the correct mileage?

While you are it, ask why it is not on the Askmid webby...ASKMID.

Seller sounds genuine but all these points need to be looked at.

Forget about blurb about owners. What does it say on the V5. Log book to older folks.:)

Didn't know about this site thanks. Looking now...

When I got mine from eBay at the start of the year I got a £5 HPI check from the RAC. They aslo give you a £5000 guarantee so that if they miss something that you later find out about (ie. it turns out to be stolen or have outstanding finance) you can claim 'damages' of a sort - Car history report by RAC

You'll need the Reg plate, VIN and identification number and issue date of the V5 for a complete check.

HTH

phase 2 lights on it too!!!

Thats about it, if you service without the indicator it will still come on 10K miles after it was last reset. You can at that point reset it again, or leave it until you next want to service it and reset it after that service.

I am always worried when pics onf the inside hide the drivers seat. A friend of mine has been looking for a VRS for a while and when we ask for Drivers seat pics, there always damaged.

I got mine 5 months or so ago. I paid just over 5K for an 04 with 68K on it I think this will go for over 6.5K

The number of previous owners is on the V5 and is the number of owners prior to the current one! Bit of a play on words by the advertiser to make look better!

Simpson Skoda (nor any dealer) would not register themselves as the owner if all they were doing was selling it on.

So 1 previous owner plus current owner = 2 owners

if you buy it there will be 2 previous owners plus you as current owner = 3

Clear as mud?!!?;)

I've just e-mailed the seller asking for more pics of the seats especially the front ones.

I also had a response back about a question I asked about work done on the car. Here's the response:

"Last service was on 14,7,07 oil change. No warranty work has been carried with me as nothing has gone wrong.

Lee"

Right so far I've worked out that this car needs a full service, cambelt kit inc water pump and more than likely front bushes or maybe more.

Thanks to Mouse for the link to ASKMID I found out that it is currently uninsured. This isn't unusual as he probably already has his company car however could mean that the car may have been standing for a few weeks. Could this affect the rear disks and pads? Mind you he does say it's garaged so maybe not.

If you reset it using VAG-COM for example, all the counters would get reset - ie time and distance. I would have thought that if the service indicator is reset as per the owner's handbook - before or after the indicator has come on, then the counters would also be reset - but I could be wrong! Remember not everyone waits until the service indicator is lit before getting their car serviced.

I am now the new owner of this car and he was a genuine guy, the log book says one previous owner when i get the v5 back it will now have 2 previous owners, The car is spot on the interior and the bodywork look new ive looked at a few 04 vrs and this is the best one ive seen, got it for 6k which i thought was a good price, he was a memeber on this site and he was really gutted to see her go!!!!

Good luck with the new car mate.!

Hope you enjoy it.!

Michael
