anyone have an iPOD?

Featured Replies

Reason is i'm looking at buying the mini ipod and just want to know if the standard headphones are any good or infact if the overall sound quality is upto the job.

I can order a mini ipod direct from Apple

Which file formats do they play?

A lot of my music is in WMA format.

ive ordered a mini ipod from amazon 27th july i was told it would arrive. i'm pretty sure the standard headphones work

Most people actually reccomend changing the headphones.. as they scream "hey mug me, ive got

the standard headphones are ok, but i replaced mine with some fantastic Sony ones.

Also the white Apple ones say look at me, I've got an Ipod come steal it!

Isn't the file format AAC (or is it ACC)?

Also, the thing that really bugged me about the normal ipod, the fact that you can only use itunes or similar to put music on it, even tho it is shown as mass storage device... you can drag n drop music onto it but it wont play it.

Somthing like that... when you run itunes and it scans your hdd for tracks it will convert wma stuff automatically... using yet more space!

The iPod can play AIFF (like WAV files), Apple lossless codec (like FLAC, only Apple had to do their own thing), AAC and MP3 files. It also has support for protected AudioBooks in the latest firmware, but I'm not sure what format they use.

When you try and use WMA files, iTunes automatically converts them to a supported format (you choose this in iTunes setup). The only caveat is that it can only convert WMA files that are not DRM protected.

Personally, I'm still using MP3 files. I encode everything using Lame and the extreme preset. This results in excellent quality for most things, and also means I retain compatability between players.

Bagpuss.

I must admit that I like the look of the iPod (much as i hate to admit actually liking anything (cr)Apple have made!) but I might wait and have a little look at the Sony HD Walkman that's coming out in a few months. Looks great

That only plays Sony format tunes that you have to buy off a Sony web****e!

Creative labs do a good HD MP3 player. cheaper, higher capacity, plays WMA and has an easily replacable battery. Unlike iPod

I'm looking at the Rio stuff, either the little 1.5gb Nitrus or it's big brother, the Karma 20GB. They seem to get very good reviews.

Question I keep asking myself is, "how much storage do I really need?"

You want one like mine, 80GB. Can play and record videos too, all on the colour screen.

Apple do a really nice set of in-ear headphones- they sound much better than those supplied.

I'd be lost without mine - 4 days worth of audio at the press of a button. It will make next month's drive from Wales to Portugal much more pleasurable  !

Pete, I've got the Rio Karma :D Jolly nice it is too, will play most formats including ogg (?). Bought it as it got very very good reviews, slightly lighter than the i-Pod andI waasn't tied to a particular format.

Review and details

I've got a cheap and nasty smartmedia player that I use at the gym, a 10gb Mplayer for the car, and now my Palm T3 plays MP3's too! Too many players, or what?

I use EAC plus Lamer for ripping. It seems to handle most things.

Re: Ipod / Windows compatibilty, I Hated Itunes so download Anapod Explorer (

Anyone got any suggestions for connecting the Ipod to the Synphony Head unit ??

Few Options:

- Cassette adaptor

- Transpod or iTrip FM Transmitter (although I think these are illegal in the UK? Mine still seems to do an OK job' date=' although finding empty channels can be a pain sometime)

- Denison ICE:LINK which is supposed to give the best sound, although is also the most expensive and you lose the CD changer (which shouldn't really be an issue...)

I use my PDA... a 1gb cf card is cheap and it doubles up as a sat nav unit... can play videos and games... not bad for one unit if you have a few hundred quid to spend.

I Have read mixed reviews about the Itrip, I suppose it depends on where you live and how busy the FM band is. Im considering the cassette adaptor as I only want to use the ipod for long trips but I read somewhere that to drive the cassette adaptor you need an amplifier as the Ipod output is a bit weak ?
