Col, How's the Car Going?

Featured Replies

Come on, Col, it's about time you gave a mid term report on the MPS. How's the White Lightning doing? Is it as hard to keep clean as the Fabia?

Agree, wouldn't mind an update

Fast, scary and difficult to keep clean :D

Will write a proper update when i get a few mins

Blimey Col , have you managed to keep it clean?

Hope your good?

Mid Term report?

That makes it sound like he's going to "do a Tom" and sell it after three months!

Had your 3k oil change yet

Well.

The MPS is 2 months old next week, and its in for its 3k oil-change and ecu-reflash tomorrow :)

I like to think of the car as a mini-gt rather than a hothatch, it has the ability to cover ground at a truly phenomenal speed.. its comfortable and quiet on the motorway, yet very capable on backroads due to its eibach suspension with an ability to corner alot faster than people think as demonstrated at the last malt-house

The bose sound system is absolutely fantastic, its not stupidly loud like a chav system but its extremely well balanced with the sub under the passenger seat. it also changes the EQ settings and sound to compensate for road noise which works pretty well, although its sometimes a bit quick to change the sound when the surface changes on the motorway and makes slightly noticeable. it also has a 6 cd changer with full MP3 support, and a aux input in the armrest for my ipod

Fuel economy is as expected.. although it usually averages out about 26ish on the trip computer for my usual journeys (Mostly in town) which gives it a range of about 270 miles to a tank, so realistically its about the same as my octy was.

Im still getting used to the LSD.. although admittedly i dont often push the car hard enough to use it (apart from when shifty is in the car LOL!), but it can be felt on the motorway and also under braking as it tries to lock the diff, making the car very sensitive to steering angle while on the brakes.

The only thing that im not sure about are the brakes.. they are very powerful, but they dont give great feel or bite at the top of the pedal. something that the original fabia vRS brakes suffered from. so ill probably be sticking a set of DS2500's on there when needed.

So far ive had a couple of mods for it... mods are difficult to get hold of as they have to be brought in from the states... i have a COBB SRI (short ram intake) that replaces the very restrictive airbox and a Forge DV. although ive taken that off because with it being atmospheric it makes power delivery quite lumpy and fuel economy drops off :(

Im also doing a good job at keeping it clean... beacause it has some decent layers of wax on, and now i have the correct tools for the job its easy to do and gets a wash once a week

The RR day last saturday showed it has a healthy 261 bhp/270lb-ft (the most powerful non-supercharged monaro car there ;) ) although that should improve after the reflash as i have a bit of a flutter in high RPM thats appeared since putting the SRI on.

all in all it gets a 5 outta 5 :D:D:D:D:D rating from me and as my sig says have yet to come up against something similar that can keep up ;)

The car -

Very nice indeed. Its VERY white, having seen others in the daylight, I like them. The interior is suprisingly pleasant. I hate Jap cars of old, but this was nothing like it at all. Cant sing the praises of the Bose system enough. Even with my short demo, I was blown away by the quality of even mp3 being played off the ipod. Gloss piano black trim looks stunning, with a real quality feel to it.

How does it drive...

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!

Dont get in a car with Colin kiddies!

The Bose system is quite good at drowning out the screaming

What does the diff feel like when driving?

What does the diff feel like when driving?

The diff is wierd!...

Basically, just to get things straight... as far as i know, the diff thats in the MPS is a Cone-Type diff... which is less aggressive than the helical type that you get in the Megane R26 and Peloquin/Qauife ATB stuff, although it offers the same benifits.. it wont rip your arms off on uneven camber and it still self centres unless really being silly with it.

I very very very rarely drive in a way to say that the diff is a benifit to me on the twisties.

When driving on the Mway, say on a slight curve, you can feel a slight difference with the car between acceleratiing and coasting, when accellerating gently, the diff is trying to make both wheels turn at same speed, so the car is trying to go straight.. the same applies to corners really. in order to exploit the full benifit of the slippy diff you have to be really commited to a corner and use a large amount of throttle to counter the nature of the diff wanting to go straight ahead and get it to pull you out of the corner... takes alot of getting used to to use properly, but at the same time its very handy for keeping all the power in check.. i can use more throttle in this car that would just light up a wheel in anything without a diff.

Also the diff is noticeable under braking.. it makes the car very "pointy" as the diff distributes the braking force... so that when you touch the brakes, the car will almost "dive" exactly to where your wheels are pointing.. which if your not used to it is usually slightly different to where you expect them to be because of tyre sidewall flex etc.

Edit to add: can definately feel the LSD working when acellerating hard in low gears, both wheels overcome traction equally in the wet and it takes off like a bat outta hell :D

some of the above might be down to me being a crap driver.. but this is what ive observed over my previous Octy and Furby :)

Heres the different types of diff:

Type that my car has: GKN Super LSD

Qauife ATB/Megane Diff: Helical LSD

Hope it clears things up

  • 2 weeks later...
