Used Superb II on Autotrader Already!

Anyway, just to say I went for my test drive in a 170cr Elegance DSG at Claybank Manchester this morning. Car was ok but would need another drive before committing though I thought.

Back to showroom to talk figures. Showed him a print off from Broadspeed stating £22,577 for a specced up car (skoda configurator came to approx £25k.) He immediately 'went to talk to his boss', came back and said we can match that.

Great! He then went on to offer me £4.5k for my 55reg Ed100 auto. Now a quick look shows PX prices to be somewhere between £6-8k depending where you look but I should imagine that the low offer from him would just about claw back his discount.

I walked.

Thats the sort of practice I was discussing earlier, this is a blatant example of buy it in for 4.5k and it being a 100 auto model I would lay money the screen would be £8999 after prep, again it's not only Skoda who do it, I once got offered 2k for a car I purchased from the same dealer 2 yrs earlier for 13k, which in itself bore out the fact they knew what was wrong with it all along despite trying to fob me off with the old they all do that routine, 2 new heads was the problem as they shaved the originals too much or for a second time when they did the head gaskets under duress I might add, leaving me with an exec car that sounded like an old Ford with the ign advanced, best offer I got was we'll pay £700 VX will pay £700 and I can foot the other £700 for two new heads, which I know wouldn't have been fitted because the whole outfit I bought from stinks regarding sales, main VX agent btw, had bubbling in the header tank, had to get 3 independant tests done, one from Halfords with the results scribbled on a piece of pink paper, and eventually from a Merc main agent that was managed by a former employee of theirs, so in I walk lovin it that he's gonna tell me it's all ok but I hold the ace.......Oh hello, I know who you are btw and if you tell me this is ok I will take it elsewhere and if they say it isn't I'm gonna broadcast the results, one hour later and many phone calls he tells me it's blown, I thx him for his cander in the matter and leave, would've loved to have heard the phone calls....err we're busted and I can't risk the dealerships good name to save you lot, hehehehe, few weeks later I had to help the VX mechanic, head mechanic at that get a car going on the forcourt when I was there, seems someone used derv to fuel a petrol car, quite good fun spilling it and trying to light it on the floor with a clipper, and they never even offered me a drink for saving them endless hours of searching and replacing bits, anyway! who wants to try and sell me a car?:rofl:

Nice Jag btw, I love Jags, one thing to watch though from 1995 models is that the drivetrain doesn't vibrate, a friend had one new and rejected it in the end cos they couldn't find the fault, could just be a one off that only a body jig would sort out, who knows.

OK, that may be the 'official' figure, but I agree it is probably wishful thinking... I'll go easy on the right foot and maybe get somewhere close!

That's exactly the point I tried to make earlier in the thread!!!

If you want a new car with all the money taken out of it to make it cheap then because there has to be a difference between the price of new and used the only way for your PX is down. I don't work for a dealer but I am just being realistic, I have been directly on the receiving end of this recently and I can tell you it's not a nice place to be.

Example - How much would you think my October 07/57 reasonably well specc'd RS is worth? Given that is was one year old on Sunday and was circa £20k new you'd like to think a fairly reasonable figure wouldn't you??

It'll make your eyes water I tell you.

I saw a dealer selling an RS Octy with 6 miles on the clock for silly money yesterday, I would post the link but it seems the site is down - again!! but at that price it makes my car worth a fraction of the new cost, in fact over 50% down on new price in only one year!!

Would everyone please stop thinking that because the 'book price' of your car is £x it must be worth £x. The guides are auction prices from the previous month therefore they are not accurate to the day also we have to take into consideration depreciation ourselves, if you're part exchanging something that isn't going to sell really quickly (Like any car at the moment for example) then we need to take into account the fact that we might have it for quite some time.

It really annoys me when someone buys a 4 month old Glass' Guide off eBay and then wonders why the part exchange price is less than what they believe is 'book'.

Most dealers seem to be bidding CAP Average or 90% of Glasses as Glasses favours some cars more than CAP.

To re-enforce what James says with regard to 'book' prices, for those that don't know, CAP is the alternative to Glasses - CAP Current Auction Prices

Those of you with access to a Glasses might also be interested to note that there are figures often shown to the right of the car price which indicate its depreciation over the last month.

And some of these figures can make you feel unwell!

A mate of mine who works at a large Audi dealer is seeing regular drops of £1000 to £1800, which would be bad enough on 1 car, but when you've got 50+.....................it hurts!

You're not joking there mate, it's heart breaking :(

Yep, been talking to a couple this weeknd

Check out the book drops on the BMW 760Li it was £5500 last month, I wouldn't like to think how far behind book they are!

Further to my post above, the link is working again now -

Ok, so it's been sat for a while but by god that is a cheap car and why would someone consider a used with deals like that around. I bet there are plenty of people with more than that outstanding on finance on 2 year old cars.

**** ME thats cheap!! Thats the price of a regular MkII Furby!

No Pic!

Makes me wonder what end it landed on when it fell off the truck...

The sharp drop in used/2nd hand/pre-owned vehicles in the UK, reminds me of how the very same thing went on in the States just after 9-11. Was selling VW's at the time & had such an influx of gas guzzling SUV's that we couldn't offer more than pennies on the dollar for um! Not to say it gets any better but the shock wares off after a while...:(

I don't think you need a pic really, at that price it's selling itself!!

I would imagine it's a basic car and probably without Jumbo/Dual Zone etc but some people don't worry about that.

good example of market forces vs book value....my audi A6 that i have just sold for £7500 books at well over £9k in the internet guides and even the buyer admitted thats what he valued it at. however the price i got was realistic for the current market place and the CAP price for a "good example" was about £7400. Its a big engined petrol auto - like james has said no-one in the trade wants it as they will be stuck with it for months. We test drove an A6 in sheffield 3 months ago - again a 3.2 petrol. if you look on the mail dealer's site its still there now. the price is about 4-5k less than it was when we looked at it. we paid 12k in may and got 7.5k in october. this hurts !!

Why did you get rid of the A6 ? £4.5K loss is a hell of a lot of petrol if thats the reason.

not the consumption. other reasons. the ride was awful as it had sports suspension which we didnt know about (it was an SE model) . the car wasnt right for us. bad decision !! hey ho.

i thought it was funny when my local dealer said "we might not be able to compete with internet sellers on price but we are a local family firm and have been here over 50yrs and will look after you". so whats that mean then ? will they come round and wash the car every weekend ? will they do the shopping at tescos and pop round with it ? or perhaps they will send me a naf christmas card "from your friendly family firm". what i am saying is that once i have paid my cash and got my car what could they possible do for me that will be any different if i buy from the other end of the country and then use them for service. (maybe they will see me coming in for service and spit in my coffee ? or stick chewing gum on the car carpets ? LOL)

Had much the same argument from the dealer I ended up buying from. I've been back to them for warranty work and a service even though I have two other Skoda dealers who are nearer. Can't say if the other dealers would look after me any better/worse (although one of them I took to the small claims court, so perhaps they would be spitting in my coffee!) - it could just be clever psychology on the part of the dealer to make you feel you owe them loyalty.

As a customer, they owe you, not the other way around.

They have to serve you well to get your money, end of.

Sorry, not end of! Nobody owes anybody. The dealer provides a service or product, the customer pays for it, end of!

If the customer enjoyed the product or service or felt they were treated fairly and are happy with the price, they may return to use the dealer again!

I for one, know of a dealer that gets a lot of repeat business by providing a fair and genuine service and looking after their customers needs, for which the customers are willing to pay for, but I would not say the dealer owes their customers anything!

Don't ask Asda for a job then.

There is only one boss. The customer. And he can fire everybody in the company from the chairman on down, simply by spending his money somewhere else.

But, do customers get a good service in ASDA? Or do they think it is good value and convenient, so they return week after week.

This isn't about ASDA and what or how it delivers, its about the man who created the largest retailer in the world, whose very successful philosphy you've rubbished in one sweeping statement.

How have I rubished it when I previously said this....

I agree with Mr ASDA, but I think his business has moved on a lot since he made his statement.

Anyway, I thought this was about a used Superb on Autotrader!:P

Anyway, I thought this was about a used Superb on Autotrader!:P

It was but it did a handbrake turn at about post #12 and went into the whole dealer vs broker thing :P. Given that dealer's (good) reputation, I'm surprised by your efficient yet impersonal description.

I think 'that' dealer used to deal with one of the main brokers, but they don't now, I wonder why that is? Maybe I'll ask next time I'm in!

i think my and many others customer services on here are second to none. we are talking about silly discounts from brokers who dont give a stuff over your customer experiance.
