The maths involved in exhaust modifying!

cover the pedestrian on the pavement in soot instead ? :P:D

No - It's on the other side. I'll be covering traffic going the other way. ;) I have reason to believe there are laws against having it on the left side, although I'm not sure if that's the case? It would be easier going out the passenger side because the fuel cooler etc is on the offside.... but then there's brake lines going down the nearside.... [sigh] Either way I was factoring in the need for a shield of some kind.

It would defo be interesting if you had your windows open and gave the motor some welly...... cough cough cough

Well, let's just say Skoda never designed the fabia to have an exhaust going where this one will be going. ;)

Out of the bonnet, up the A pillar, across the roof and exiting out the back next the roof spoiler! :D

I thought something like this would be sufficient :)

Is a side exit exhause legal for road use in the UK or Europe.

Another thing, as already mentioned earlier. You have removed the A/C from your car, so in summer I guess this means driving with the window down. Contrary to popular belief, the air passing down the side of your car is disrupted and even at speed will remain static beside your vehicle, and the vortex created has the possibilty to blow the exhaust gases through open windows or up into the fresh air intake for the heater. Thats why empty sweet rappers/fag end usually blow back into the car as you try and throw them out the window. Exhausts are mounted to the rear of cars for this reason, and changing it you could end up poisening yourself.

I am more likely to have it going out the back part of the side, but if I have to drive with the offside windows shut sometimes, so be it. :) I need that extra performance. ;)

If it isn't somebody best go tell Dodge as their Viper/SRT-10 has always been a side exit jobbie. :)

and 90% of hgv's have o/s exiting exhausts too:thumbup:

Here's a little diagram I just did in CAD,

how many years of training for that technical design jase? skoda are sending someone over as they want to take you on for the design of the fabia 3 ;):P:thumbup:

**** ***!

The first word begins with F, the second with O! Use your imagination :P (like I did when using MS Paint :D)

(ps, That angle = 135 Degrees) :D:D

My dad used to have a kitcar convertible jeep thing that had an exhaust exiting just in front of the O/S rear wheel. Don't remember smelling exhaust fumes in that, and it was powered by a Ford Pinto engine. Was about as aerodynamic as a breeze block though!

This what your after?

I know a man who will make you any exhaust you want in Newport. He has a mandrel bender.

Pm if your interested.

the other thing you need to take into account jason is the venturi effect of squeezing a pipe, also bear in mind the the exhaust flow is not laminar as the different frequencies of pulses (as you go up and down the rev range) alter the place in the tubing where the vortices are formed. to be honest there is no real easy way to calculate the flow characteristics because there are too many variables..

but the most important thing to remember is, what you gain in one place, you loose in another place

in regards to mandrel bends, they are ok up to a certain point, but they only work well on thick tubing, most tube fabrication workshops will use a ring roller to create perfect uniform bends with no deformation

That's a Kinda offer Decron .

(I must admit I did read the last bit a tad "wrong/fast" - 'He is a bender' :o)

Is this what your aiming to achieve Jason? :D

First off, side-exit exhausts are legal, as long as the pipe itself doesn't get hot (even in a case like the modded Coleman-Milne in post #41).

Secondly Jase, just what makes you think there will be a discernable gain in gas velocity (which is the only place power could come from) from having 4 (maybe 6) feet less 3" pipe?

At the moment my exhaust goes 2.5 into 2.25 so in a way there is a small constriction, plus the exhaust place I had it done at was a bit crap and their bends are not mandrel at all. Therefore I believe I am better to go out down and out the side, using bought in bends supplied mail-order. :) I want to achieve something like the Norris Evo above but my exhaust will be terminating behind the sill, and will also be champfered so as to hide it quite a bit. ;) Essentially there will be no exhaust to see from the outside unless you get on hands and knees. That's the idea. :)

going down from 2.5 to 2.25 won't necessarily decrease performance, stepping to a smaller size increases the gas speed and therefor increases cylinder scavanging

  • Author

Well, all I know is on a derv you want zero to get in the way, so in my mind having 10 feet of 2.25" is "something in the way" even if there's no boxes/cat etc. Plus I'm trying to make mine more like a sleeper car. ;)

jase, as tom said as gases get further from the engine the cool down and as a result slow down so by stepping down a pipe size you effectivly speed the gases back up and actually make the exhaust more efficient.

Well - I'll see how it goes. No harm trying something for the first time.;) Plus the video of the Nova got me going. :D

and to be acute, tis obtuse as well :D

An interesting idea but I worry that with your smoke output, it'll coat the rear tyres and lose grip. Plus, if you're not careful, your car will constantly appear to be on fire! However you do it, I think the main jet of the exhaust need to face outwards rather than downwards. The cool way to do it is to cut and form the sill around the pipe trim. (can you call it a tailpipe still?) but erm... Insurance might not like that idea.

I won't be butchering the sill for sure. Not worth it. The angle I was referring to was just the change in angle not the total angle. :D
