has one of my coil packs just lunched itself?

Featured Replies

just been out for a blat in my octavia vrs.

engine goes all rough and lumpy(3 cylinders)engine magament light comes on.

did skoda replace them FOC? all of them or just offending pack? car is 3 years old so out of warranty, are they gonna try and get me to buy a set?

any info at all guys and girls greatly received(whilst i use the search button ;) )

They should have all been replaced during the last service to the latest revision regardless of if one was faulty or not. 3 years is about right for the problematic ones, I had 2 go before, and your symptoms sound right. There is a thread here somewhere which contained the original service bulletin, all VAG 1.8T cars were affected by the problem.

I realise that mine was probably less of a worry to the dealer because of the extra "approved used" warranty I had on my 3-year-old Octy, but when I took it in for them to sort a few little niggles they replaced the coil packs without me even mentioning them because "they noticed they were of the older type" ... which was nice.

according to the service book, mine has only been to a skoda dealership for its first service.which is probably why its on its original ones.

gonna make some calls tomorow ,see if i can find a sympathetic dealer.

If you have to pay for it yourself you're looking at about ninety quid for all four.

And kids. Don't forget, they can go even if they've been changed. Currently they are fitting 'L' coil packs.

Let us know if you have any success with the dealer, jason. There wasn't any time limit on the Service Bulletin action and, if your coil packs are the dodgy type, I believe that they should still be replaced FOC.

not arsed on price, though free is always a bonus, just need the car back on the road for sunday, can't miss the BTCC

asked at the dealer if they would replace them for free, there asnwer was that they had already been done with J type coil packs, and as that was over 12 months ago they would be out of warranty.(btw this was al done over the phone to begin with)

so, i bit the bullet and coughed 80 odd quid for a set,got home and fitted them one by one and starting the car each time to see which one was lunched(number 3 btw).got to number 4,remove cover and gubbings over it and removed.

as i was doing this i was obviously checking each coil pack for which letter was on it,the first 3 were G type the number 4 was an L type, which is what i was sold by the dealer.

so tomorow i'm taking back the G type ones and gonna get them to check again they were actually replaced and when.if these are the original fit ones do you think i would have grounds for a refund on 3 of them(the G type)

or will they dismiss it as i fitted them myself and could of got the G type ones from anywhere?

skoda customer services??give them a tinkle and test the water,or am i persisting into the wind.

i'm just happy the cars back on the road, now with 3 spare coil packs

Jason,

I would try for the refund, you never know your luck. Looks like at least one was changed, and because it was changed with an L, I guess it was after the service bulletin therefore all 4 should have been changed then. For all you know Kennyhkw might have been told that they had all been changed. G is the original type.

Jason,..........I would insist on a refund for all four ....you were told that they had all been replaced with J type coil packs , when in fact you hadn't even got one J type ...........3 G's and an L .............They've been telling porkies :D

agreed ,not the fault of the dealer i used today, they just read it off the pc i geuss.

will have my reasonable nice guy head on tomorow, they seem a reasonable bunch.

i did ask kenny when i bought it,and he was unsure,he hadn't had any changed.

glad to have it back on the road, just a little miffed if i could of had 3 of em done for free.

i'll report back tomorow ;)

Jason, I think you are in a strong position to get the 3 old - ie G - coil packs replaced FOC, not least since it was a G which should have been replaced which had failed. Did the dealer check the service and replacement record for your car on their PC - or just assume that the coil packs would have been replaced?

they checked the service record and told me they HAD been replaced with J types.

there only argument i can see is if i have some how got hold of 3 G types and i am trying it on to get some dough back,as they never actually saw the car, didn't want to drive it 18 or so mile on 3 cylinders so DIY'D them.i can but try.

Jason that is a tiny list of warranty work, my last car a MB a-class A170 diesel had the following done under warranty (much of it after mucho talking at length to MB UK:

Gearbox rebuild due to wrong materials used during manufacture, resulting in gear selection difficulties.

Front wheel bearings, one collapsed other replaced as a precaution

Diff replaced due to a bearing failure

Front A/R bar drop links and bushes replaced

Rear suspension link bushes replaced

many internal switches replaced due to working intermittenly or completle failure

Clutch finally failed at 47k miles it had been slipping since about 30k miles (fly wheel also had to be changed as it was bellow minimum tolerance)

Engine was replaced at 84k as the MB dealer refused to admit that the car had a fuel leak which after so many miles needed a replacement head, which was on back ordr with no due date. The (MB UK) took the decision to put a complete new unit in at a cost of

I have a similar problem... It stops halfway up and then automatically comes down, as though it's sensing a blockage in the window 'area' and refusing to go any higher. Dealer has lubricated the runners, but it still happens. Won't be getting it looked at again until just before it goes out of warranty though... Can't be without my wheels I'm afraid...

Having stopped, does it close properly if you lower it fully then select close (up) again?
