Just had a lot of 'fun' with the SWMBO's second AAO after the first one failed on it's 5th or so hour of uptime. Huge battery charging issues, with the thing just shutting off when you pull the plug even though it claims the battery is at 100%. Bios version 3309 is the cure, despite not claiming to fix that problem. I get the feeling Acer are dodging the (seemingly common) issue but as long as it works..

i want to upgrade my BIOS , but i just have no idea what to do , i did read how to do it on the AAO forum , but didn't have a clue

If you've got a linux one, the tricky bit is in making a bootable USB stick if you don't already have one, or access to an external USB CD drive. Either way you copy the BIOS and related files from the ZIP you get from Acer to your bootable medium, then from a DOS prompt you just type the single line given in the instructions that come with the ZIP.

If you have an XP based machine I gather there's a utility that'll update it directly from the desktop.

XP one , i will look into it further , i have read of people FUBARing it up whilst upgrading the BIOS , hence my reservations in wanting to do it

There is a page that details an emergency restore routine built into the AAO that'll pull the correctly named files from a USB key and do a bios recovery, but unfortunately I can't remember the URL.

BIOS update probably the most risky operation there is, if something goes wrong it can brick your pc for good. Not that it happens often, but if... so the important question is: why upgrade?

"Because there is an update" is a bad answer. Only reason to upgrade is if it's necessary to fix something that doesn't work properly. Have only upgraded once (on my old Dell laptop) when it refused to recognise a new AC adapter.

IIABDFI is probably the best advice there is in the entire pc world :D

just found this thread, swmbo got one at start of year on linux, but after the second start up had the blue screen of death and couldnt fix it.

Ive since been looking for one and was wondering if anyone can recommend one and a place doing the best deal.

well i got mine for £159 120gb hard drive and 1gb memory from acer direct but a friend at work just got one from amazon 2 year warranty £140,the only thing i have done to mine is put Rons tiny xp onto it everyone at work love it:thumbup:

Bit of thread revival action, but here goes...

I got into a spot of bother with my A150L today! For reasons best known to myself I wanted to swap the 120gb disk for a 60gb... (As I'm not intending to use the space on the netbook itself, I thought I'd pop the 120gb in an enclosure to share music etc with SWMBO and child).

Not having a DVD drive between us to reinstall Windows 7 I thought I'd attempt to clone the drive. First time I've tried this and once I'd overcome the problem of the size difference - had to remove my data partition and shrink the install partition to less than the destination drive - I finally got a copy across that I thought would work. Swapped the disks and the boot screen came on and then died... ahhh... swapped the original disk back in and still nothing. Not even boot screen.

Panicked a little and then happened across instructions for flashing the BIOS by USB. Not that I assumed it would fix it but after three attempts it worked!

Formatted the 60gb disk and then re-cloned, with it in place and the original in the enclosure this time, and crossed my fingers... got the Windows repair dialogue first time which said it couldn't find anyway to repair it... but then it worked after another restart!

So here I am. Hopefully it'll be stable enough to last me until I get an enclosure for a laptop DVD drive I have lying around... :)

just updated the BIOS to the latest Acer release

and put an extra 1gb of RAM in

just a pity i hardly use the darn thing

I might have a use for it Ric, if you want to sell on. One of my relatives was asking about netbooks - well something small and light for web surfing, to which I suggested they might want a netbook :)

Drop me a PM if you like.

Cheers,

Steve

its got my VAGCOM on it, which might have to be used soon, if my car continues to consume fuel at its current rate

Hello all,

It's been a while since i've posted after having some problems with my log in after the December issues.

Anyway....

I was hoping that someone could help me out. I am having a problem with a friends Acer Aspire one A0A150 which runs Windows XP on a 120GB HDD.

Basically, the netbook arrived from factory with a hidden restore partition (ALT + F10) to start it running and the remainder of the disc was the C:. I received a phone call from my friend to say that he has an "NTLDR is missing" message when he switches on his netbook. After some, 5 minutes, research i noticed that this seems to be a well known fault with this model. I tried numerous "online fixes" i.e tinyempire etc but to no evail. Then suddenly after a reboot the computer would then fail to reboot, You could here the fan spin up but there was no Hard drive activity. Again after a quick jump on the net, this seems to be abother well known fault requiring a BIOS update. After completeing the BIOS update the computer kicked into life again and showed the BIOS screen. I then made a Windows XP USB Boot drive ( using a Windows XP SP2 OEM disc )and proceeded to change the BIOS to allow me to boot from that. I read online that it had to be a fresh install and that Windows had to be on the first partition so i erased all partition and created a new one, therefore deleting the (corrupt recovery partition). The windows installer began to run and everything appeared to be going OK until it asked me for the product key. I typed in the product key from underneath the machine and it displayed a message "Product key is invalid". So i then went back to the drawing board and made a slipstrreamed USB booot drive but with SP3 integrated. Again i got to the point when it was asking me for the product key. Unfortunately after typing in the legit product key i received the same Product key is invalid message. Now heres the strange thing. Sitting next to my desktop at the time i decided out of curosity that i would enter the product key from my Fujitsu desktop. To be amazement it allowed it and it carried on installing windows right to the end. It even activated online. I found this bizzare. I could give the netbook back to my friend but naturally i worry about something "happening" with my license.

I then phoned Microsoft who said they couldnt help. phone acer. Phoned Acer and they want to charge an absolute fortune for a recovery disc.

So here's where, hopefully, one of you guys come in. I know that the Windows XP version didnt come with receovery discs but i understand that the netbook has a program called Acer eRecovery which allows you to make one to use in the event that if your hard drive fails you can reinstall Windows.

IF anyone has one could they make me a copy, or if anyone still has the factory defaults and still has this eRecovery program on there computer could they make me up a recovery disc and send it too me. I know its a big ask but i'm willing to compensate in some way for it.

Please excuse the long winded post. Thanks for reading and, keeping my fingers crossed, i hope someone can help me/my friend out.

if i knew how to do it, i would do it for you

Cheers mate.

There are some prerequisites which i failed to mention on my main post. The first one being that the image to be burnt has to be the factory default image and it has to be burnt to a DVD, therefore you require an external DVD rewriter. Do you have an external writer? (Keeping my fingers, legs, infact anything i can cross, crossed)

Cheers mate.

unfortunetely not, sorry :(

No matter mate. Thanks for your help. Hopefully somebody will come along and help me oot!

I thought someone might have been able to help me out with a Windows disc. Anyone have a Linpus Lite Linux disc? I would presume being a Linux OS i would be able to install that.

What is it your after? I have, or can make, iso's of pretty much every Windows OS, and can do Linux too after downloading them. Also, where are you based?

PM if it's easier.

Joe.

PM sent mate. Cheers for any help you may be able to offer.

I have one of these as well, i have had it just over a year now and overall i am very impressed, i got the cheaper version which came with Unix installed with 1GB Ram and 120GB HDD!

Needless to say within 2 hours of opening it i had Windows XP Installed via a neat little USB to IDE cable so i could connect up a DVD-Drive  However as of last week i have now installed Windows 7 Pro and i have been VERY impressed with how fast and smooth it is!

I even installed Windows via a USB Stick which only took 30mins B)

I love my lil Acer

Dave

Windows 7 has been installed on it just now and it runs pretty well.

Has anyone installed TinyXP on theirs?

So how are all your little AAO's doing? Still going strong? Or thrown in the bin?

I still havn't got one yet, but really want one to take away with me in May. The AAO is still the one I want, but I havn't a clue which one to pick!!

I need help!!

On the Acer website I narrowed it down to the 8.9 inch version, which gave me the model A110/A150. When I clicked on that, there was about fifty of them! I know I want windows, but that's about it.

Any features that I should definetly have? I'd use it for web and maybe word docs, uploading pics whilst away and maybe music(?).
