Poor mpg....

Featured Replies

As the title says really, my 05 plate Fabia vrs with 60k on the clock seems to be losing a bit mpg lately. My commute to work is about 4 miles of A roads and about 17miles of motorway but yet when i get to work and check the trip computer my average mpg is 45 MAXIMUM, sometimes less. Surley it should be better than this?? I dont drive the car hard, on the motorway i sit at 70-80mph.

I contacted my local Skoda dealer who said that if i havent got any engine management come on then theres nothing to worry about. If theres no management light come on then theres no faults????? I'm almost 100% sure i was getting alot more mpg out of my older vRS.

Can anyone shed some light on this??

Cheers, Ian:thumbup:

My vRS never did over 40

hmm have you changed the air filter scince you got it? could be dirty

Yip, changed the air filter a couple of month back. Dealer said try giving the fuel filter a change aswell?? Might give it a bash!!

I keep seeing people on here acheiving 55mpg plus so it just made me wonder about mine:confused:

Maybe they're all sitting at 50mph!!:D

I've a "55" plate. I've noticed a little drop mainly due the cold. If I've let it run for 3 to 4 min whilst de frosting by the time the mpg comes up its in the low teens so it takes time to recover.

There's nothing up with the car because when I come back to it with a warm engine its into the 50's no probs.

Once warm with this cold air it should do a touch more mpg.

I havent got anywhere near the 50's with it. The engine is warm by the time i get on the Motorway (3-4miles) then its about 17miles at 70-80mph so surely i should be achieving the 50+mpg like everyone else??

when you get on the motorway reset the mpg counter and see if sits in and around 55mpg at 70-80mph. You'll know the cars ok then.

Guess you will have checked tyres are at the correct psi.

Yeah, checked the tyres etc. The trip does sit at 55-60mpg at 70-80mph but on the average setting, like when i get to the end of my journey, it states 45mpg averaged over the full journey.

Just had a week in the Lake District, total of 463 miles at 51.4 mpg.

Ignore the computer.

Fill the tank every time.

Calculate MPG brim to brim for several tankfuls.

If you get better than 47MPG I'll be well impressed.

i really dont know how people get 55+ mpg, even nursed beyond belief the best ive had is 50/51

As long as MPG is over 40 I wouldn't bother mate. If you checked all the usual things like tyre pressures etc. I would not worry about it, the cold weather would knock back your MPG figures as well. The only true measurement would be to fill the tank take a mileage reading and drive 400 or so miles then refill and calculate your MPG the old fashioned way. The MFA only gives an approximate MPG reading. My last car was a Golf PD130 with remap and big TT wheels, never got more than 40mpg in that.

How big are your BBS LM's? Big wheels with fat tyres will have a negative effect on your MPG. Did your old Fabia have standard wheels??

Tonto is right, ignore the computer.

the fact is that they arent that economical...

me and my friend just drove around 180 miles of motorway and a roads.. sitting at the speed limit all the way and i got 43.9mpg and he got 44.5mpg... :thumbdwn:

they aint that good on fuel i would of hoped 50+ because we really did nurse them :(

also ive noticed they get rubbish mpg until theyve warmed up so due to the cold mornings etc it doesnt help

3-4 min to be warm?!? I was under the impression it was more like 15-20 min to warm the engine up!

Aye, after it has been sitting on idle for a couple of mins before i drive away.

Not got the LM's on anymore mate. My old Fabia had the same wheels as i've got on this one now, TT Comps:thumbup:

If you sit at 70-80 MPH on the motorway you will be running some boost at the revs needed for those speeds. So 45 MPG will be about right. If you set cruise to 65 MPH you will get 50+ MPG no problem.

Another common mistake is to use 6th gear on A roads when your doing about 60 MPH, if you use 5th instead you will get far better MPG

Try to get 45 MPG out of a petrol motor with similar performance :D

If your engine is warm after 3-4mins, that indicates your style of driving so no wonder you're getting 40mpg. My engine takes 10mins, 20 at the moment with the cold weather to heat up. Went on a run today and got 62mpg indicated which is about 56mpg (mines overreads by 10%)

Drove to Maindenhead and back today, 5 hours total to get there and back.

Was happily sitting at 50mpg at 65mph (GPS). Managed 57mpg a few months back on the way to Bath, but I was drafting a transit van doing about 70mph. so I suppose that doesn't really count :P

Note; MPG recordings via the Trip Computer.

Don't worry, my best average is also about 45mpg.

That said, I'm hardly surprised it is not up in the near-mythical 55mpg+ zone as I like to welly my vRS at every (safe(relatively)) opportunity.

My resolute commitment to living and breathing the Briskoda ethos (driving a Skoda briskly) is borne out in my long term MPG average of 40 (push the reset button to toggle yours).

It is good to know that however Briskodaly I've driven on a run (including a 600-mile round trip to Seat Surgeons at proper M-way speeds), my MPGs have never dipped under 40.

How many petrol-powered motors with a bit of poke can say that, eh?

could be the weather in the past week being so cold. ive found my mpg have dropped by about 5 mpg in the past week. Trip to JKM in portsmouth saturday morning in an empty car scored 34mpg yet in the summer same trip with swmbo and mini text plus a car full of camping equipment got me 40mpg. Have found 7.5c to be a good temp for performance and mpg through!!!

Cold + Dark + Wet = lots of ancilliaries switched on and slow warm up times, therefore reduced mpg.

Worst tankfull I have ever filled up was just under 45mpg (calculated), you won't see that in any petrol powered car with similar torque levels anywhere. The best ever was not better than 55mpg and that was driving like a granny.

If your engine is warm after 3-4mins, that indicates your style of driving so no wonder you're getting 40mpg.

He said 3-4 MILES not minutes !

I find my vrs very economical, on a motorway run sat at about 70 the trip computer stores over 55mpg usually closer to 60mpg and thats without using the cruise control !

Even my journey to work (7 miles) the trip stores over 55mpg and I dont drive like a granny either ! :D
