MPG differences between BLT and ASZ engines...

Featured Replies

Hey guys - I used to have a 54 plate vRS - I believe it had the older ASZ(?) engine? I normally keep track of what I get out of a full tank of diesel using the brim to brim method and in my old car, I would get pretty much spot on 400 miles before the fuel light came on, no matter how I drove the car. The most I got I think was about 470 from a full tank after a trip to Wales on roads where the speed limit was mostly 60.

I recently purchased a Fabia Limited Edition and I believe this has the newer BLT engine. The thing is now I'm lucky to hit 350 miles before the fuel light comes on! I got to 380 the other day after a motorway trip to the Lake District and back so I'm wondering if anyone has the patience to tell me what exactly the differences are between the engines (I know the BLT apparently pumps out a few more horses) but is that enough to amount for the difference in miles between fill ups? I'm chucking in a few measures of Millers too but it doesn' really seem to make very much difference at all in terms of noise, smoke, power or frugality. The car runs fine - it is smooth and powerful and as far as I'm aware it has a standard map.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers guys.

Mike

I think the ASZ was the engine code before they adjusted it to compensate for the emissions whatnot, then they called it BLT? (something about a washer in the engine).

I think this is what it means but somebody will be able to back me up or rubbish what I have put :D

I heard that the BLT was slightly more powerful????

Ah... so it's just a washer and not a new engine! Haha! BLT to me is bacon, lettuce and tomato.

There were some other changes as well as the different EGR valve gasket.

My parents' BLT engine achieves much better fuel economy than they ever got with the ASZ engine they had before (now my car).. so I guess it's all down to how you drive it etc :)

different turbo too i believe the BLT have the dreaded kkk unit as opposed to the garrett

Wasn't 6th Gear longer on the ASZ? Which would make a difference.

Nice idea however only very early Fabia VRS's had a longer 6th gear (as discussed here) which was shorted in one of the round of revisions

my 04 plate car has the shortened ratio so its unlikey this is the cause of reduced MPG between a a 54 plate car and a new SE

BLT engine was tweeked to meet Euro4 emissions for diesels. I have an SE with BLT engine, worst fuel economy I've had was 46MPG in mid winter. Summer driving has that up to 56MPG, and it gets the beans quite often.

I would check air filter is clean. Skoda say they are good for 40,000 miles, but that is rubbish. Should be changed every 10,000 miles for best economy.

Fuel light comes on at about 480 miles.

Dude, how the hell do you get 480 miles to a tank where as I get 350? Do you use the expansion? Maybe air and fuel filters need changing. I was expecting more MPG from this...

I get 410 town driving... what are you driving it like? lol

I drive it sensibly - don't boot it off the line, slow down well before lights and try to hit them as they change etc. I don't drive it any differently to my old 54 plate one, in fact, if anything, I'm more careful with it as I haven't had it long and it's newer.

Get it checked!

Just filled mine up after 440 miles with 80 miles left according to the computer:rolleyes:

Type of journeys make a huge difference - my commute is 30 miles each way with the cruise set at about 65 for most of it on the A road.

i got a blt engine in my polo! We usually get 380-400 and thats on a daily commute of 30 miles a day which includes A roads and one junction on the motorway!

on the long run to leeds the other week we got to 400 and the light hadnt come on and we got 470 out of that tank!

if it has done less than 5k the motor will still be tight and that can affect mpg, if it has done more than 5k get it checked, I have a BLT and get a steady 400 to a brimmed standard tank not nipple tricked to fill the expansion

It's just rolled over the 30k mark... Cheers for the advice guys.

ive got the ASZ engine and at best i can get about 52-55mpg indicated not calculated, at very very best

usually i get about 45-48 indicated

Well the car is standard except for the PCV elephant hose mod, but that doesn't really effect MPG. If you are getting 350 miles before fuel warning light comes on, that's about 38MPG 10 gallon tank, 1 gallon reserve, so 9 gallons used.

If your car was over-fueling, you would be getting black smoke, that leaves things like dirty air filter, boost leak, very dirty EGR valve and inlet manifold, N75 Turbo control valve. Vacuum control unit.

One thing I have noticed with the BLT engine, is it drinks fuel if you use too high a gear at lowish speeds. About 1800 revs is the sweet spot, that gives nil boost, and lightest engine loading. At anything under 50 MPH, 5th gear is better than 6th unless you are going slightly downhill.

You could also check for binding brakes. Possibly the MAF could do with a clean as well.

I simply can't get over 45 mpg as an average calculated mpg on my 06 plate (BLT) VRS which I'm disappointed with - I drive pretty easily most of the time and the trip computer regularly reads over 50mpg.

Car was fully serviced last november - around 8000 miles ago. How would I check for binding brakes or any other factors that may be restricting the fuel efficiency?

And how do you clean the MAF?

Binding brakes, jack up each corner in turn, handbrake off, wheel should spin easily. Fronts will drag a little due to the differential drag.

MAF is delicate, and needs to be soaked in Isopropyl alcohol for half an hour.

I've always been advised by every motor technician I know to replace rather than clean the MAF sensor. The MAF sensor is very easily broken/damaged...

The MAF sensor comprises of a very, very thin wire, that doesn't take much breaking. A lot of techs suggest that the MAF sensor should be a servicable item. I replaced mine at approx 55,000 miles and got an immediate increase in engine responsiveness and fuel economy...

I don't deny that some people could probably be careful enough to clean it successfully, but I wouldn't trust myself to :).

haha, I get about 300 in my 54 plate vRS (ASZ engine), thats from filling up till an indicated 5-10 miles left in the tank.

Thats not much more than the Escort GTi (1.8 petrol) I had, which got absolutely abused everywhere and got about 260-280 miles to a tank.

I get a bit of black smoke when I put my foot down buddy, more so than seems usual so maybe it's over-fuelling slightly. Do you know what - I always thought that higher gear = better economy and I often put it in 6th when doing just 40! Maybe this is the key to my problems... I'll drive it in a lower gear on this tank and report back. Thanks so much buddy.

I usually get somewhere in the region of 450-500 miles and the fuel light will come on, on a long motorway drive 500+ and the trip computer says somewhere in the region of 50 miles left in the tank.

My vrs has a BLT engine and its remapped, and has a turbo back milltek exhaust (decat)

I dont drive like im 100 years old either lol

I'm pretty sure all fabia's uses KKK's.
