Coasting down a slight incline 30mph speed limit but doing an indicated 39 (so probably actual max of 36). A motorbike cop with a handheld laser type speed gun with two lenses on the front. He tracked me with the gun all the way up to him and made a proper big deal about pointing it at me as I passed him.

He never stopped me or made any attempt to follow.

I think I will have a NIP in the mailbox shortly, other half thinks cop may have been 'faking' and just there to slow people down, as whenever she's been gunned they have always stopped her (i'm inclined to believe her as she's been done 3 times that way!).

So what do you lot reckon? Yes or No plus stories please

I think "No" and that they would have pulled you over if anything was going to be done about it, but that's purely guesswork.

If he tracked you the gun gives an incorrect reading. It has to be held stationary to give an accurate reading. Doubt you will hear anything further. He has you worried, so his days work was a total success

No.

(As above) - The gun must be held still to gain a true reading. Slow it down and move on.

It is a rarity for me to speed, however slightly. I was in a bit of lazy summer afternoon trance tbh.

If I get a ticket, I won't whine on about it and I'm not particularly worried either. It would be my first one for 20 years and I do 25k a year so one speeding ticket over the last half a million miles isn't bad :)

Unlikely any details were taken on a 'handheld', surely they would need to stop you to nick you if using this device.

Either way, 30's are 30's for a reason. Perhaps sticking to the limit would do away with such uncertainty in the future.

Good luck though.

Oopsie!! An indicated 39 in a 30 is a bit naughty!!

The laser does NOT have to be kept still, it simply needs to lock onto a flat point on the front of the car (usually the number plate).

As far as a yes or no is concerned, I'd say "No" - with a speed camera van you'd get a NIP from about 36mph, but a bike cop with a handheld is more likely to set his discretionary limit at 39+ ( I know I would...)

On the upside, if you DO get a NIP, the likelihood is (with 36-39mph) you will be offered one of those "speed awareness courses" as an alternative to a fine and points...

Either way, 30's are 30's for a reason.

Yes, that reason is to raise more money from speeding fines!

Speed is simply easy to measure & legislate.

Safety comes mainly from driver awareness, however, it's very subjective & difficult to quantify.

Id say no and im sure john above will agree, if the copper is doing a speed trap and was going to do you he would have pulled you over to make sure he had your details so that later when a nip came through the door that you didnt start the i dont know who was driving thing or even have a nip sent to the address of the car which wasnt your address.

Also I guess he would have pulled you in so that if you got ar$y with him he could then give your car a quick mot check making sure there wasnt anything else his pen could write a ticket for ;)

Fingers crossed it's a "no".

A special thank you to all those telling me off. I'll tell you why it's 30 there. Because 200 meters further along the road it is NSL. They recently moved the 30 signs further 'into' the NSL so that traffic coming the OTHER WAY has more time to slow before the village.

Obviously the side of the road exiting the village has also got to be 30 for that extra stretch now even though there are no houses or roadside footpaths.

So yes it is 30 for a reason only on the other side of the road.

I didn't really want to get into a is it right or wrong etc. etc. discussion. If I get a ticket that's my fault for speeding and I don't want or expect sympathy.

I've voted 'yes'

I got caught by a van @ the bottom of a hill in Bristol a couple of years ago...not concentrating 100% evidently & thought it was a 40 so went down the hill @ 40, even remember checking the speedo when I spotted the van too.:o

NIP came through the post shortly afterwards..lucky Avon & Somerset do the drive aware courses so £60 lighter of wallet & an afternoon doing the course & I escaped the 3 points:thumbup:

I as many would say its a no........ as most cops will stop you at the side of the road or follow......... but heres a funny story for you.

Mate of mine saw a cop on bike ahead when doing quite a bit over the limit (limit was 40 or 50). So, instead of passing him and waiting for the mike to follow he just pulled in beside him. Bike cop said what you doing?. Mate said, well you were about to chase me so I thought I would save you the bother. Bike cop never let him off though! Anyway, cop asks him where he his heading too, my mate tells hm, cop says how long till you get there then............ mate says about 2 hrs............ cop says, you will never get there in that time.............. mate says You seen the speed I drive at?............

I was clocked by a hand held in France a few weeks ago doing about 100kph where it was evidently about 80. Waiting to see what happens. My understanding is that they stop you at the side of the road, relieve you of your Euros and send you on your way. But they didn't. It was a busy dual carriage way and 5pm on a weekday so they were perhaps looking for locals wanting to get home quick after work.

Likely no. Only way he could have your details is if he had another spotter somewhere taking registrations of speeding cars. Keep an eye on the postbox for 14 days though!

You should be alright as well, I got flashed by a french speed camera 3 years ago. Not heard a thing yet, and have been back several times since.

you shoulda flipped him the bird and floored it.

I vote No.

If he wanted to give you a ticket, he would have stopped you there and then.

No you won't get a ticket for that. Common sense applied, you slowed down, a job well done.

As for the speed camera vans, it depends on which force it's in. I was done doing 34 in a 30 zone by Lancashire Police. The van was parked on a private road, the camera poking through a gap in a hedge, sat 8 feet short of a NSL sign. I had accelerated to 34 mph a fraction of a second before I should have done. 3 points, £60 fine, no offer of a speed awareness course. That was all about raising revenue, nothing more nothing less. Can't help it but I just I imagine the officer sat in that van to be a mean spirited, fat, shiny arsed oaf with no friends and no social life.

Update - it's 14 days since the incident and no NIP arrived.
