Two lanes of traffic at the lights...

Featured Replies

didnt say it was, perhaps some members here need to get out in a lorry and experience what its like to be in charge of one of these vehicles. You can start overtaking another lorry with some good speed only to find when you are level the lorry you are overtaking speeds up leaving you stuck there. If you slow and try and pull back behind it you will find the cars that are an inch away from the back of you getting even more irrated.

Then there are the lorry drivers who illegally coast down the hill up to speeds of 70mph (remember they are restricted to 56mph by law) only to get stuck on the next flat or hill when their restrictor cuts in again.

Personally i think the 56mph is too low especially when coaches can still travel at 70mph which usually carry more weight. But my only logical thinking of why the government introduced it was so when lorries are as you put it overtaking at 0.1mph it slows speeding motorist down.

1) Why does this only ever happen in front of me when the 2 wagons on question are out of sight when the move starts? If you're correct I'd expect to see it happen occasionally.

2) Why have I never seen this happen?

3) Coaches have the same axle and GV weight restrictions as a truck with the same axle configuration. Also IIRC they're now restricted to 100kph rather than 90.

I can take any lane I like on my Bandit, and be

gone before most drivers awake to the green

light :)

I once saw a CBR600 rider with that attitude try to go straight on from a left only lane with a fence opposite. The car in the correct lane got the jump on him but the biker still nailed it and nearly ended up mounting the kerb and going through a fence but squeezed through when the car driver saw what was unfolding and braked. The biker then hurled abuse at the driver which was comical given what had just happened.

Proof indeed that as others have said you should always have a backup plan.

If you're all doing "56mph" then why the need to over take?

Or we can move heavy freight back to the rails, meaning less congestion on the motorways

All freight, ON THE CANALS!

the limit 56mph on the limiters can vary from lorry to lorry, we have lorries restricted to 88k/ph due to the way the limiters are programmed, one vehicle on our fleet is 89 k/ph and then some of the older ones that have now been restricted now have a 5% difference in speed on the speedo to on the road (showing you going faster than you actually are) whilst the newer ones are calibrated so well that the sat nav/talex unit will show exactly what is on the speedo. There is so many variables that make the lorries go at slightly different speeds and some companies have opted to limit the vehicles to 50mph.

Then when it comes to hills the weight of the freight can slow a vehicle right down to push it above the limiter down hills (often with the illegal help of coasting).

I agree a lot of the freight could go by rail and leave the lorries to move it from rail hubs out, dont get me wrong working as a professional driver i can see jobs being lost (long distance) but plenty new jobs to work on shifting freight on its final mile.

My biggest annoyance is the people who decide to sit and tootle in the outside lane because they are turning right at the junction or roundabout 1, 2, 3, 4 miles down the road.:mad::mad:

Cheers

Dave.

Of course, the only way you can finish up driving a vehicle limited to 56, and stuck outside one limited to 50 or 52, is if you slow down once you're out.

It does make more sense to me, I'd rather see less 40-foot trucks on motorways and more 3.5T's moving stuff from rail to local places.

Sundays are a dream to drive on in Germany... no lorries!

Getting back on topic though... I think I would do the same and if I were in the right lane wanting to pass I do exactly what Chris suggested about coasting up in 2nd gear or whatever and getting a rolling start to it. There is a problem with people that overtake etc just to turn off down the road, pulling into their drive a mile further on etc etc.

I had a couple of cars overtake me on the way to Bridlington yesterday as I was going slow to get some distance between me and the cars in front ready for Garrowby hill.. then once I was at the hill I had kept my momentum and just flew past everyone including the people who had just overtaken me.

Hi Phil

I agree with you.

However, you could buy a diesel, then you could just overtake them on the hill anyway!

cheers .. Darren

You obviously do a lot of driving in Doncaster!

Just upgrade to a mini-cab (Octy) then you can pick which ever lane you want :D

most of the time i go in the right lane even for staight on that way i either have the choice of being let infront or just dropping behind the car that sprints off the line to stop me getting infront, howevr im more then happy to abliterate evryone if im in a more powerful car!:giggle:

THe thing that gets on my wick so to speak is loads of people using the right hand lane then nobody can filter in! and those who use the right hand lane with no intention of geting infront and just potering along loosing people the space they could have had if they were in the left lane anyway!!!!! :dull: :S :|

The best rule to remember in any situation is not to make any other road user change speed or direction. Then you can pick the course of action that suits you best.

I'd suggest this applies way more often than a lot of people think. If you're driving down a main road, and force the guy behind you to slow or stop "because you're being considerate and letting someone out of a side road" then you're not actually being considerate.

The worst people are those who pull out of a side turning in front of you. Sometimes they then accelerate briskly away, but by then it's too late, you've had to brake. This happens even when you're the only car in sight. How hard is it to wait 10 more seconds?

I get this a lot, people thinking "oh it's only a P-reg Golf" and the being surprised when I'm moving quickly behind them :swear:
