RANT: Why do people compare the Fab RS with cars not in its class?

Featured Replies

It is friendly here, i have noticed. All other forums are very protective and grumpy, and fail to realise they all share a common interest. Ok i dont own a skoda, but i am on here because its the best forum around and they talk general helpful sense.

Personally I made the car handle a little better and go a little faster cause I could. I have never been one of these people who stick on body kits, new alloys etc in fact I have never modded a car full stop. This is the first car I modded cause I can basically and the extra Umph is great.

The problems with people putting it in the same class as the Civic etc is cause they have no concept of the different classes of cars as they are basically Rock Apes. :D

Whenever my car is put back in the garage for the weekend the engine is one clicked back to standard as only on special days is it given the sport map as I don't drive round on full throttle all the time and it's nice to have a standard powered engine on most occasions.

Go on be off with you Smart boy :D

BTW I wanna nother go

I have not modded my car, except to change the stereo, but I would imagine that some of the people who do mechanical/performance modifications to either their Octy or Furby or for that matter any car do it as a project, their hobby if you like. This I suppose would be especially true of the people who fit the stuff themselves. Nothing wrong with that. In the old days when cars were simpler, owners would have been tinkering much more than happens today.

Myself, I find the performance of my standard Octy vRS to be more than enough, and still after 10 months or so puts a big grin on my face. I have to say that I get pleasure even from the lowly 1.6 (75bhp) LX octy, because the engine in that car has to be the nicest sounding I have ever owned, and for some reason she is faster bt far than the engine spec would suggest!

Spot on William! It's exactly the same reason people overclock computers or do DIY projects in and around the home. It's the desire to improve something and doesn't necessarily mean the original thing is bad at all. Each to their own I guess :D

You're more than welcome for another go, got a possible fix for the car driving like it has flat spots so soon it should fly

It felt fine mate but there again I don't drive it everyday. Now to talk the SWMBO into getting one  :D

Present company excepted :P

Of course :D

I also agree with what you're saying Paul. I bought my Fab for all the aforementioned reasons...and the exclusivity of it is a real plus factor.

So why did I Revo mine, as I drive it like an old Original Wurthers grandad on the local roads 'round here?

I decided in my wisdom that it would make an ideal dual purpose vehicle..cost thing I suppose!

As you may know, I do hillclimbs and sprint championships...as a hobby..nowt serious. More for the social scene I suppose. So ithought I'd try the Fab at Ty Croes, and was staggered as to how good it was as compared to my 'prepared' AX. So began the dreaded slippy slope..need more power to beat the competition. The Ax is now just sitting on the path, waiting for a bit more work to get it to rally spec for a few tarmac events.

If I'd decided not to use the Fab for sprinting, I'd probably have left is totally standard,as for the normally normal road use it gets is more than adequate.

Sometimes wish I hadn't joined this forum..well so my credit card statement advises me! :D

look at it like this at the weekend with mods it's a play thing, during the week it's a A2B cheap runner!!

Ivan, it is a bit soggy and has got so much more in it, just gotta find out whats wrong and causing it to die out, so if you enjoyed it when its not behaving......

i wanna mod mine because i love the way it performs at the moment and know through others of the possibilities of it and i want to reach those levels in my car. the cost thing isn't so much of a problem here as mine only cost me

On off the big reasons people modify cars is because it is easy, to chip either vRS usually is only 1/2hr with a laptop plugged into your car...

So a quickish 130bhp is now 180bhp...

In the past ( pre ECU etc etc ) to tune like this meant replacement big valve

gas flowed cylinder head, exhaust, cams, air filter etc etc = big expense and work..

The Fabia and Octy vRS's are built to a compromise, this means that some people will be totally happy,, and some will want more power, different handling, and monster sound systems etc etc...

I do agree with questioning someones 'sense' who buys say a 1.2 Fabia, then

mods it to look like and try to go as well as a vRS.. Why? the insurance will almost definitely be more expensive than a standard vRS, total price paid

for the car + mods can cost more than a standard offering..

I do hate this 'Max Power' thing as it makes ugly looking cars that cannot be driven on normal roads because there is no suspension!!!

cheers

Dazz

So which car are you using for the track day? I hope you don't say the AX, after all it is "a bit" of a briskoda gathering :D

CJ was doing the trackday before it was taken over by Briskoda - albeit on the Saturday.

Oh dear, sorry about this, but yes, it's my intention at the moment to bring the AX along, subject to the cost of repairing the handbrake, the headlights, and passing the mot,+ 2 new tyres, oil change and road tax.

It needs a blast 'cus it's not been driven in anger this year, since the arrival of the Fabia, plus I want to see why it's a quick in terms of time per lap at Ty Croes..well within 1/2 a second. The Fabia feels so much quicker, but I suspect that it's being let down on the corners. If/when money permitting I'll get the handling sorted and I think it'll then eat it alive!

I need to therefore pit it up against a remapped only Fabia VRs..like mine to try and get some sort of comparison.

Anyone willing to give it 'death' with me shadowing you..well not too close, don't want to be accused of racing! ;) Taboo! :thumbdwn:

Andy? Why all the smilies and grins when I mentioned about tarmac rallying the AX? Oh! My signature. and your avatar!

How's your credit card now? :D

Err...

It's a hobby.

I would modify a car whatever it cost.

If I got a CTR, I'd want to tinker with it, maybe even supercharge it, but 1. I don't want a CTR, and 2. I don't want to spend that much on a "base" car for my tinkering.

Fabia vRS (IMHO) needs the following (IMHO):

Uprated Brakes

Uprated Suspension

Painted (or Chromed) Door Handles

Apart from the above, it's a perfectly capable warm hatch.

But, if you're into your cars (and don't just want a nice car to get from a-B) then you might want to toy with it to make it a little more individual and of course make it a bit faster!

On my old Polo you'd have to spend 1100 quid to give it an extra 40bhp.. On the Fabia it's "only"

Josh some goos points there. As to the suspension I have found the car is alot better with just an upper strut brace. It's more responsive into and out of the corners, once the lower one is fitted again I should see a marked inprovement.

The brakes IMO are good enough for the job and people who say they fade easily are not driving the car correctly.

The remap again IMO is well worth the money to give you some extra grunt not that the engine didn't have any but like with any car you can always do with a little more to have the edge over your peers.

Bolleaux! :P

OK, on the road it is fairly hard to fade them, but it can be done. My favourite place for it is on the A5, round Shrewsbury. About 5 roundabouts, fairly well spaced. You know there is a load of single carriageway coming up so you want to get ahead. Blat it between the roundabouts, late braking and they will fade.

On track, where mine spends a little bit of time, standard ones dead after 2 laps :(

And there lays the problem, Late braking :D

Standard brakes do fade under heavy use on the track and are now getting pretty hairy on the road too! Must get round to upgrading them to 312mm setup soon.

Oh, and like Josh. my car is modded as it's a hobby and something I enjoy doing. If I had a 30k car, I'd still mod it and put my own personal stamp on it.

Ivan, there is late (which is later than most people) and stupidly late :D

The brakes could be better I agree' date=' but it doesnt need uprated suspension or painted door handles at all. I've seen photos of your car, and while I am sure you like it, and I am pleased that you do, I dont particularly like it with all the trim pulled off, and the plain door handles have never bothered me.
