Maybe, but trust me there is a reason for it

Not prying, and don't want to know if you don't want to tell...but I bet it's something to do with either work, woman, or dosh...or a combination of two or all! ;)

Come on guys, lets face it, we as Briskodians are fairly unusual in that we love our cars made by a manufacturer that a decade ago was ribbed for the quality (or lack of) in the machinery it produced.

A good number of us probably haven't experience the rear engined Estelles and Rapids, but like me, an equally good number probably did. However we all have heard the jokes even though they are irrelevant these days, but in general, the public hold a perception regarding our cars; "it's a Skoda".

I'm sure this willingness to demonstrate the ability of a modern-day Skoda is why some of our number have spotted that it is essentially a VW and as such there is plenty of stuff that can be done to make it that bit faster, handle better and stop faster. In essence, some of us, me included I have to say, like to see the BMW driver taking a double look in his rear view mirror and wondering why a Skoda is still keeping apace.

To be honest, I can't remember what my Skoda drove like in standard spec, and since then I have spent a small fortune and for what? Well, my 0-60 times are little better, cause it's a FWD car with too much power through the wrong wheels, but once your in second gear and beyond wave bye-bye Mr BMW. :D

Like Des (cough), stick with the unmodded and stay part of the Briskoda community because we need allsorts on here to provide that friendly atmosphere talked about at the start of this thread. If everyone is modded then we will end up disargreeing on which tuner is best, who's rolling road is wrong (oh, we do that anyway) and pooh-poohing those who are original enough not to mod!! Just search for those threads people have picked up from other car web communities, I recall silly people on Cliosport, Audi and BMW forums in the recent past - we don't want to end up like that do we?

(oh and chrome is good also...)

No way dude

However' date=' it still seems to make more sense to buy a faster car in the first place.[/quote']

But how much more will this "faster" car cost ?

Ok, i know i don't drive a Fabia, and that's what this thread is about, but the point is still valid...

My search for a new car took place over a 7 or 8 month period, as my Astra was still decent and i wanted to get the "right" car..

I set myself a maximum budget of

Agree With MH above.

If you want a FASTER car , then there are plenty to choose from.

However, once you start looking at the package as a whole, MONEY will in most cases dictate what you can afford. ( even down to modding - if you so desire ).

I will admit this is the first car I have ever tinkered with, in order to "personalise" it, and I think in the main that is what everyone here does.

The ideas that oh! this needs changing, that needs changing, all boils down to personal prefs.

I am sure we all remember the inital comments by the press that the Furby needs stiffer suspension. For my needs it doesnt.

I have even been asked, if I had the choice of any car for day to day running around in - my choice is my current car. :)

"If it feels good, Do it "

To those who said fitting an upper strut brace sorts a lot of the handling problems out on the Fabia, I salute you! Although I still believe it needs some firmer/lower springs, fitting the SeatSport strut brace today has indeed made my car feel a lot tighter around the twisties (there are a lot of those where I live!)...

So, add another

i bought my Octy knowing i was gonna mod it once it got to 10K which i did(Jabba), and i'm now on a bit of a spending spree, not good!!!!

i bought my car because of the image thing and the value for money.

we love our cars for many different reasons,so just enjoy them everyone!!!!

I bought my original Octavia TDi because I had read so many glowing/ gushing reports about the model, and I really liked the looks of it!

I accept the fact that the more popular Mondeo/Vectra/etc repmobiles are all pretty good cars, but a little common, so in my lust for something a little different, and safe in the knowledge that the Skoda was satisfying most owners admirably, bought the Octy.

I was more impressed than I thought, and grew a certain fondness for it, so when I bought a new house and needed some cash, I immediately looked at the Fabia, which is a clear winner in the Supermini class.

Now I have recently recovered from the house purchase, the choice was either going to be a Fabia vRS or some sort of Octavia...

Having grown to like the slightly lighter controls and modern-ness of the Fabia, and not wanting to buy an old style Octavia (unless it was an L&K Turbodiesel...still expensive though) nor being able to afford the particular new style Octavia, the vRS had to be the one to go for!

This time, armed with a

Do you think a strut brace would invalidate the warranty, give that you can buy it as an official accessory for another VAG car?

Anyway, I guess I can see the points being made now, that it is a lot of car for the money and some mods dont cost all that much. Its just a pity the warranty has to bite the bullet if you do it.

I can't imagine a brace would do anything to the warranty, as it doesn't affect any single item fitted to the car at all.

Does it? :rubchin:

but its a performance modificatios that is going to put evtra stress on other areas of the car. i know this extra stress won't do any harm but its them that makes the rules and any performance modification not designed specifically for that model or fitted by themselves will probably invalidate the warrenty

any performance modification not designed specifically for that model or fitted by themselves will probably invalidate the warrenty

I think there's plenty of evidence to make mincemeat of that statement :)

Ivan, there is late (which is later than most people) and stupidly late :D

Was it not Stirling Moss who stated that if you were neither accelerating nor braking, you weren't trying hard enough (or words to that effect) :D:D:D

The important thing here is,

DONT BUY A SAXO OR PUMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The car is great, its fast enough and great fun to drive, granted the stereo is crap and possibly needs an airfilter / strut brace to make it a touch better but apart from that I love it,

I can see why people mod the car and that up to them but personaly I wouldn't do anything to seriously invalidate the warranty as I work in the IT industry and have no money

And yes I know air filter would probably knack me warranty but I can always keep the old one in the boot

But the faces on people as you annihalate them in a small Skoda is worth more than the extra BHP from other cars.

Interesting thread this one... it basically plays out much of the thoughts that have at some point gone through my mind w.r.t modding what is already a fantastic car (fab vrs). :D

I think that I am swaying towards a remap and suspension upgrade, as for approx.

This thread makes very good reading for anyone considering modding their car. I can totally understand where Pbirket is coming from. It does seem a little masochistic to spend a wedge on a brand spanker, then spend an extra wedge to make it better, when you could spend your wedge on something thats already better.

I suppose it's down to personal taste. I think people who mod belong to a particular demographic. even if they bought a Civic type R, or a Focus RS they wouldn't feel at one with the standard car so they'd go ahead and mod it.

The Fabia vRS brings modding to the masses as there's a lot of tweaking to be done, and the car's relatively cheap. I don't think its so much about the Fabia vRS being a poor car so it must be modded, it's a very good car. it's more about the modders enjoying their hobby and showing off the changes they've made. Some are obsessive, others follow the crowd, but they all get pleasure out of fitting extra bits to their car.

There's even a brand of little remote control cars now that you can mod the pants off (can't remember the name). You can buy new wheels, uprated motors, change the springs, add neon lights, new body work and aerodynamic kit. By the time the kids have finnished modding they could have afforded a Tamiya petrol powered race prepared R/C car. It's the fun of adding the bits though.

I am considering modding my Octy vRS. the difference is, it's a 51 plate which I've had for two years and it's out of warranty. I've now had the chance to save a bit of money for the bits I want and the car's only worth about

Modding that's cheap and safe is great. I am considering a chipping and an uprated clutch, in the future, perhaps. Will be driving it standard whilst the warranty is valid though.

It's going to be my first and probably only new car I've ever owned as we havent got kids (yet ;) hehe) and I will be doing 500-odd miles/week on average.

Wanted summit decent this time and it's great for a bit of fun. I do think that if you are after some performance upgrades, this car seems pretty suitable. It is not a Ferrari, and it wasn't meant to be one.

I must admit I do like it as a bit of fun to cream some boyracer types, when I'm in the mood for it, but in the main I'll just drive it for the economy and great value for money :D

As for modding itself - each to their own, as long as it's done with safety in mind and the insurance is aware. Without that, I'm dead against it... ;)

pbirkett

is warranty what u r worried about. some of us do not buy cars brand new with a warranty so we do not have this to worry about

i am looking at a Y plate car or a 51 plate and i am paying something stupidly cheap like

Ah the thread that never dies... well warranty is a concern yes, but in honesty, I think I may have been worrying too much, and while I still agree with some of the sentiment of the original post, I was in a crap mood when I posted that! :P

how long has it been going now.

i read all the way through it after i posted my thoughts

and there are a lot of good points

it i about individuality, i personally like to modify my car improve what is already a brilliant car (Octavia Vrs)

some people like yourself like to keep a car standard,

there is nothing wrong wth the fabia VRs in fact as far as i know it is a faster car in acceleration terms than the Mini Cooper S

Ironically, I might end up modding it after all. I blame this site!!! :D
