Just been browsing round Whatcar's website and came across their 'Depreciation Index'. Looked up the vRS and couldn't believe how far out they seem to be. I wish I could pick up a 1 year old for what they quote :eek:

How do you think they calculate such figures, especially seeing how inaccurate it seems to be in this case?

I think they are trade in amounts? As a new car they are probably guessing at the figures for 3 yrs time, in the end a car will always lose money so you have to swallow the depreciation and enjoy the car. I always hate trade in time, it seems my cars are always worth less than I would like, thats life I suppose!

Also how many people would have considered a sporty diesel, let alone a Skoda, unless Top Gear et al had not rated it so highly.......... I do wonder if Skoda's slow production turn around times are also helping resale value....

It's very difficult to predict future values. However, the main reason I went for the vRS over a high level 100bhp TDi was the residuals: I can imagine them being stronger on the vRS.

Oh, and I like the seats, too!

I seem to remember in the recent Autocar long term test 'end report' they were surprised to find out just how litlle their Furby had depreciated. It was a completely standard, red vRS. With just under 16k on the clock it had lost

Longer waitinf times for new one - it's surprising what people impatient people will do.

I bought a vRS last month and picked it up 4 days after signing on the dotted line, my mate who was so impressed with my wee furbee went over to the dealer last Thursday, ordered a black one and picks it up next Tuesday.

The thing I was allways reminded of it that these graphs allways quote the manf RRP and you never pay the RRP I got my VRS for 10999 from the dealer. They dont take into account the demand. Cars do burn money I have never buy a new car but in the Furbys case it was the same price new as a 8 month old with 10K plus I lived my dream of owning a new car

These prices allways seem high to me... My new VRS was 10,800 in March04, no options in red. Looks like I could sell it next year (as if I would!!) without looing much. My 2.5 year old Clio lost

Spot on, weve been buying them in at silly prices just to satisfy orders, used ones are going for more than what Tins etc are quoting for new ones just because people want them.

Could have sold my car about 10 times since we opened (I allways park out the front )

was the 04 has the new gearbox ratios, which mean its doing an extra 500rpm at 80mph. the silver one was the fasted and most economical, but i put all of the extra speed and some of the economy gains down to their respective milages the 04 only having done4k whilst the 03 just got better the more miles it did

so as its turned out the furby Vrs depreciated less than the bmw mini cooper which we owned before it

Despite the MINI's supposed depreciation-proof qualities, I think this may be because MINI encourage people to personalise their purchases. This is always going to be a mistake if resale value is a concern, as the chances of a second-hand purchaser sharing your taste exactly is pretty slim. I saw a MINI Cooper the other day with red and black zebra stripes on the roof. I'm sure the owner likes them, but I can't imagine it's a view shared by many...

Had to pop into the dealer today to get some PD oil (kinda expensive!), and they had a 53 plate Fab vRS (relatively high mileage) for I think just over GBP 10900. Assuming it was traded-in for GBP 9900, 12.5% depreciation in a year is actually pretty good!
