New VRS 2.0 tfsi - Rattling noise

Featured Replies

Anybody got rid of this rasp / rattle or is it a feature of the Turbo ?

It is almost a similar noise to one I had on a 1.8t Ibiza when the bolts holding the turbo to the manifold came loose so maybe it is the wastegate??

Wonder what the dealer will diagnose???

Staggering! Diagnosis = nothing "serious" yet they don't know what it is and will only know if the try another one!!! Wow!!! Good job they aren't doctors! Can you imagine it. "Well i've no idea wh

  • nothing odd about it. its a characteristic of the tsi engine. happens across all the VwAG engines. there r thousands of threads out there with mk6 golf gti owners complaining of the same "rattle"

  • Wastegate linkage rattle as mentioned earlier in the thread. You need clip 06J145220A fitting to the linkage. Two minute job (from under the car)

I had a metallic vibration on acceleration when new around 2500 to 3000revs - now the car's done 6000 miles the noise has gone - think it was the exhaust before it got a coating of carbon !

This won't be a lot of help getting the problem sorted, but having had one of the first 2.0 tsi vRS engines in the UK via my LE I've never heard any noise like this at any revs in the past 15 months - so if the dealer/VAG say the noise is 'normal' that would imply my engine has a fault by not making it, which I seriously doubt...

bump

I have this noise too, 2010 model picked up in May. Any answers yet?

Again the car has been faultless, no loss of power etc

Mine does it too - petrol FL model

oh so happens in a TSI as well then...odd.

it's been confirmed numerous times that it is the wastegate that is rattling. This can be confirmed by following the Volkswagen America TSB which suggests temporarily placing a "wheel weight" on the wastegate actuator rod to observe whether there is a change in tone or volume of the rattle.

official TSB can b viewed here

although there have been many references to the exhaust manifold, downpipe, meshing, heat shields etc etc.

have read here & here

Just found this thread via a search.

Lifted my spirits to find someone explaining EXACTLY the same issue I have with my late 2010 vRS (TSI).

I can best describe it as what sounds like heatshield vibration - a rattle-come-buzz noise that appears to come from the rear left of the car, although it's hard to pinpoint. It is only ever present between 2250 and 3000rpm, reproduceable every time, on mid to heaby throttle loadings only - disappears on light or a closed throttle.

Fecking annoying. So I went into the dealer today and after a test drive, and having it up on the ramps, they concluded it was normal characteristics of the car and that they'd heard of similar noises on other cars.

This thread seems to be backing up that statement, but I just find it laughable that Skoda find this sort of noise acceptable on a modern-day road car.

I keep telling myself "well, at least you didn't spend another £10k on an equivalent VW Golf", which numbs the pain a little, but even then.... :)

Might follow that VW bulletin and diagnose myself!

Can anyone confirm that Skoda are carrying out this fix below?

Has anyone got a sevice soon who can ask about this before I speak to my dealer?

The Bulletin reference is : 2021062/6 Dated: 21.07.11..

"Engine - rattling noises from engine exhaust system"

Fits the same part as the USA instructions in the 1st post. Part Number: 06J 145 220A

Problem:

Rattling or jarring noise from the area engine compartment/exhaust system occurs between 1900 and 2900 rpm.

Cause:

Because of exhaust gas pulsations, the flap and rods of the wastegate vibrate at the start of the boost air control, which causes rattling or jarring noises.

Solution:

Fit a spring clip on the wastegate adjustment.

Part:

06J 145 220A – Spring Clip.

Warranty:

Claim instructions are incorporated for dealer claim.

I have exactly the same on mine. Not the end of the world, but irritating nonetheless. The fix described above would be great!

I have read on here, however, that there is another option....... a Shark remap will get rid of the rattle! If this can be confirmed by those in the know, I'll be heading up to Mansfield earlier than planned!

Anyone?

  • 5 weeks later...

I have a FL 2011 RS TSi. I also have this rattle.

The car is actually at the dealership today to get it sorted. I have pointed out the correct tsb and partnumber for the clip.

The tech did confirm that he hasnt seen this before.

Will keep this thread updated.

I have shark map and still have this noise.

I have a similar problem on my 2009 vRS Limited Edition - a metallic buzzing noise most noticeable between 2000 and 2500 rpm when the engine is hot and when pulling in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear. I took the car to the local dealer and suggested that it was a vibrating wastegate actuator rod. They found no problem and told me they couldn't carry out the modification recommended by VW for the Golf GTi because it hasn't been authorised by Skoda UK. An exchange of telephone calls with Skoda customer relations confirmed this. It appears that if I want to have the modification carried out then I will have to pay for it myself. Any suggestions for ways in which pressure can be put on Skoda UK to authorise this repair for vRS owners?

Fitting a spring clip may not be too difficult, does anyone know where it is meant to go?

Vwwatercooled golf mk6 forum has a massive thread on this. Vw Australia are fitting the spring clip to golf gtis with same engine under warranty. Skoda Australia who are the same company in same office have been slower to show their hand. Skoda uk will know all about it but won't want to act until pushed.

Very useful reply thanks. The A$75 asking price sounds like a lot of dosh for a $0.01 spring clip - surely someone in VW/Skoda could see the marketing sense in solving that one under guarantee. Customer goodwill doesn't come cheaper than that.

Vw/skoda Australia make the uk arm of the business look like Einstein.

No idea. I would like to check for myself whether the rod is loose and therefore likely to vibrate but I don't know how to access it. There is a clip on YouTube showing how to fit the clip but it doesn't show how to get to the actuator rod. The clip itself costs about £65 and takes about 20 minutes to fit - but since this is obviously a design/engineering fault which all cars using this engine suffer from (Leon FR, Audi A3 TSi and Golf GTi)and since the car is still under warranty, I think that Skoda UK ought to get their act together and authorise the fix for the vRS. I wouldn't be happy having to pay for a part or a modification when the problem is caused by a faulty part in a car still under warranty.

Same point I made myself but I thought the clip might be sensibly priced.

About 3/4 weeks ago I contacted my dealer about this issue and sent them the VW fix information.

They agreed they were aware of the noise but there system shows no fix under warranty.

They contacted Skoda UK but got nowhere.

So where shall we go now?

I've got this noise too. Did loads of searching and found it is a common trait on the TSi engine.

If Skoda UK will not authorise the fix then I think the Ante may have to be upped and start involving trading standards etc. I'm away with work for a few months but I will be taking this up with my dealer, SUK and if needs be trading standards as it is annoying sometimes. You can hear it quite loudly outside the car as I can hear it when I pass through tunnels etc.

Mine does it and I'm happy to join a complaints list or petition or similar.

vw does all the servicing for skoda cars here in oz, including bringing skodas into the country.

so when i asked if i could get the rattle fixed, they shot me down saying the TPI (fix) ONLY applies to VW cars.

asked them why not considering they (mk6 golf gti & fl octavia rs) have the same turbo tsi engine and they both belong to the VwAG family? the vw technician tells me that "they don't have the same engine"!!!

i couldn't b bothered arguing.

on a bright note, my rattle is not as noticeable unless u listen out hard for it. apparently on the GTIs u can hear it loud n clear!!

end of the day, its a pity that VwAG dont have the best interest for some of its kids (skoda, seat) when it comes to warranty fixes.

i've been closely following the discussion on the vwwatercooled forum - thought i'd have a case to get mine fixed. guess not....
