Why do diesel tail pipes point downwards?

Featured Replies

I've noticed that quite a lot of diseasels have exhaust tail pipes that point downwards towards the ground. Is there a reason for this? I've even noticed that on some cars they will have a fake flashy crome tail pipe but the real exhaust sticks through the bottom of it. Most bizarre.

Just thinking out loud...

Is it to stop soot sticking to the bumper? I.E. your back bumper might look like it sits above a coal fire after a while.

Does the VRS not have the same pipe ends on petrol and diesel?

Mine don't :S (runs outside quickly to make sure they're not fake ones)

Yes it is to try and stop all the soot from going directly into peoples faces, and Diesel vrs are just a badge exercise to fool people they haven't got a diesel! Which is fine till they start up! :giggle:

Eat my soot, petrolhead :p :giggle:

Diesel tailpipes generally point downwards as it helps to disperse the smoke in a less obvious way. Some exhausts also have trims which help to mix the smoke with air to disperse it in an even better way.

Generally (although not 100% of the time), diesels with straight tailpipes have DPFs fitted

Ah yes, it'll be for the soot. Cheers guys!

Thought you'd bite brimma , but as I cycle at least 12000 miles a year I couldn't give a damn about fuel consumption ,and yes I usually do eat your soot :giggle:

Fabia VRS is a straight one with no DPF and does nothing to disperse the soot!!

The back of my car quite often looks like a coal scuttle before a wash

So I guess that makes you a part-time Friend of the Earth, as opposed to a fully paid-up member :rofl:

Is it just me that enjoys giving the person behind a faceful of soot!? lol

I have seen a lot of peugeots that have the little fake chrome end on then the actual exhaust goes down and out the bottom.

The one on our pug is tucked up behind the bumper and point down and to the centre of the centre.

Mine both have, but they've used the same back box as "normal" petrol models; vRS owners are just "special". ;)

They point downwards because Hell (where the Devil lives) is underground and we all know that diesel is the Devil's fuel.

I now see why you chose your username. :giggle:

It's not only cars that have downward pointed exhasts. Busses, vans, trucks, do as well. I've found this on Wikapedia. In some trucks, when the silencer is front-to-back under the chassis, the end of the tailpipe turns 90° and blows downwards. That protects anyone near a stationary truck from getting a direct blast of the exhaust gas, but often raises dust when the truck is driving on a dry dusty unmade surface such as on a building site.

What is a coal fire?

What is a coal fire?

A fire... with coal on it...

Audi TDIs have exhaust tips that point downwards on the TDI140 and straight on the TDI170 A-3 S-Lines

I'm sure Rover 800 petrol versions had the same where the exhaust tips pointed down

My petrol Roomster's tailpipe points down.
